Hi again,

Its all change now as I have a copy of Grandads Record of Service (oooops I was wrong :o( )

West Yorkshire Regt 03/10/1922 - 02/10/1930  (married Nan in 1932)
A.M.P.C (???) 09/03/1940 - 02/09/1941
Kings Rgt 03/09/1941 - 03/10/1945

No other details just No: 13010896 Rank PTE Name STARKEY Robert Served in Regts/Corps as follows The Kings Regiment.

It has a Record Office Stamp on but all I can make out is Preston Record Officer is R Murphy

Got to wonder what he would be doing in the Army 1922 - 1930 - if anyone can help ..............

Well bearing that little lot in mind and the other comments on the picture - I think its possibly from his first stint in the Army - he certainly does not look in his 40's

Hi,

Many thanks to everyone who have helped me.

mmm45 - Grandad was from Shipley so will probably be on the Bradford Roll but its not on my bus route :o) and it will be a while before I get back to the UK.  I have the Roll for Bradford and he's not in there but there are a few missing anyway (ones that I know were in the War)

Grandad would never speak of the War - if you asked he just ignored the question and would very quickly change the subject - all I know is he was Red Cross,  was missing in action in 1940 - escaped via the French Underground and was hidden on a farm in France and then was on one of the last boats out of Dunkirk.  Nan went down the Salvation Army to speak to Soldiers that had made it back to see if anyone had seen or knew anything of him - he got back though.  He never left the UK again he worked with the POW's.  Thats all I really know and thats from my Nan

Regards

Julie

Mmmmm,

You're right it does - very strange,  I was sure he was Prince of Wales Own - but I could be wrong.

Hi,

I have this picture of my Grandad (Restored by the other Board - Thanks again) but I am unsure as to which war it is from.  I was told he was in both lied to get into WWI and was 40 years old in WWII (born 1900)

As far as I am aware he was in the Prince of Wales Own Yorkshire Regiment.

Hope someone can help

Hi,

Thanks so much everybody for doing this - I'm 99.9% sure it is him.  I put it against his wedding photograph and I'm almost certain now I've seen the lighter versions.

I'm going to post it on the WWI site just out of interest as in WWII he would have been in his 40's and he looks quite young - well certainly not 40.

Thanks again

Hi,

I have been sent this picture which is possibly my Grandad but its difficult as it is very dark and I'm not 100% if it is WWI or WWII,  I am led to believe that he was in both wars - I'd really appreciate any help on this.

Many thanks

Hi EmPea,

What a welcome back to my Computer :D  I've been offline for a while now and had almost forgotten about the Brooch and my message.

Well,  I wonder what happened to the Son.  I suppose it is possible that the note I have was written by an elderly relative which would explain the slight differences.

I would love a copy of the Death Notice if thats possible and then I will have to make a start and see if I can find any living rellies still out there - I love a good challenge.

Many thanks for the info Moira

Kind regards,

Julie

Meles,

I just wish it was something to do with my Family - that would be good but sadly I know nothing of these people - which is why I am trying to find some info on them.  It seems so sad that it is not still with the family - I would be hanging on to it if it was my Family as items like this are a one off and not replaceable.

Hi,

I have "acquired" a Brooch and with it is the following Note:-

This brooch belonged to Maria Midgley (Ardee) who had it made and the locks of her dear husband put inside.   Thomas Midgley died after being thrown from his Horse in East London Sth Africa.   He was the first Chief Waterworks Inspector there.   He left four daughters and a Son.  Died March 1888.

The Brooch was made in Dublin at McDowell Bros and it is still in the original box - looking a bit worse for wear.  If you look at it - it is three flowers and some leaves - remember the flowers you used to draw as a kid - a round bit for the middle and then put the petals around - but look closer and it is made of hair - pretty freaky - well I think so.

So how can I find out just how true the info I have is - I've googled him but not really got anything concrete.
