Hi Norrie- I came across some information that may help you and that is the marriage certificate of Andrew Dick and Elizabeth Ostler , 23 June 1868. Andrew was 23 a coal miner, from Kettle, Fifeshire  and Elizabeth was a factory hand, also from Kettle. Andrew's parents were Robert Dick, seaman and in brackets is written master seaman, deceased and Catherine Dick nee Gordon also deceased.

If Robert was a master seaman, his seaman's ticket will give a date of birth and from that you should be able to track down his parents. I am hoping it will be Andrew Dick and Eliza Moodie.

Let me know how you get on.

Regards

Nancy

Hi Norrie- I am really vexed about my Dick family information. I had a massive tidy up about 8 months ago, and I hope this info didn't get thrown out.

Yes you are right there are no certificates issued before 1855.

The marriage for Robert Dick and Catherine Gordon. Did you find this on the IGI  or OPR as I probably did. It has been a long time since viewing any of these records. I used to just about live at the Mormon Church where I discovered all of this information. When viewing the film, finding the name and then clicking on another number gives you more information. As I say it is some years since I have done this.

Possibly I have taken the sequence of the Scottish naming and occupation into all of this to come  up with Robert's parents being Andrew Dick and Eliza Moodie, and the naming of future generations. It is a guide only but often works.

Have you been in contact with Michael Dick who lives in Devon? Michael has a good knowledge of the Ostler family.

Will keep searching through the many files and boxes.

Have a good Christmas and New Year.

Hi- I have found the book written about the Sarten family that came to New Zealand on the William Bryan in 1841. Ellen Sarten was supposedly the first one woman to land in Taranaki. This family went on to be involved in the Maori  land wars, 2 or 3 people lost their lives. The family did originate from Corscombe. Edmund Sarten was born in the Parish of Corscombe and baptised in the St Mary's Church 13 July 1817. His mother was Martha Cornick and the father James. There were 11 children. James' father was William Sartin who married Martha Halson.  Of course you may have all of this on record.

The name Sarten has gone through many changes, Certeyn, Sortain, Sartain, Certain, however the name Sarten has remained with this spelling since the arrival in NZ in 1841.

They were brave souls that ventured to an unknown land in 1841, where it was true pioneering spirit to etch out a living.

Hi Norrie- My name is Nancy White and I live in Nelson  New Zealand. I too have an interest in family history and maybe you have some information on the Dick line that I know there must be some connection to me, but just how??? I have been trying to find amongst my records the death certificate of Robert Dick who was married to a Miss Catherine Gordon, but in the meantime thought it important I touch base with you. Robert was a seaman but was a coal miner at the time of his death??

My Andrew Dick was a seaman, I know very little more than that. THe only Andrew Dick I can find that fits is the Andrew Dick born 1792c in Fife, son of Robert Dick and Margaret Clark, of Limekilns, Fife. (As I am doing this from memory) Andrew Dick married Eliza Moodie, their eldest son Robert Dick bp 18 October 1818, married Catherine Gordon. This will be your direct line for the Ostler family. Another two sons were called Andrew, the second born 1826, this may have been my Andrew Dick who worked as a boiler maker. However I cannot find out anything more about his family.
Andrew Dick married (no record) Ann Miller from Inverness, there was one child a girl, Maryann Dick(no record of bp) I find Maryann aged 1 year in the 1851 census while her mother is visiting her sister, and this is also where I learn that indeed her father was Andrew Dick , a boiler maker in Dumbarton. I can find no Andrew Dick in the 1851 census living in Dunbarton.

In 1859 Ann Miller/Dick is drowned while travelling from Glasgow to Inverness, the Lapwing which Ann was travelling on collided with the Isleman in thick fog off the coast of Campbeltown. Two people were drowned, Ann was one of the two. Her body was never recovered and the papers never recorded the names, but this is well known in the family.

The plot thickens when Andrew Dick and Maryann come to New Zealand as part of the crew on a boat, this may have been the Robert Henderson A Dick family from Saline were on board the Robert Henderson. At this stage I can't work out the connection, however photos do appear of my Dick family in the collection of photos that the Saline family have ,who live in Dunedin. As all the older family members have now become deceased, nobody knows who these family members are. Shipping records only recorded those immigrants not crew. The Robert Henderson made two trips to New Zealand, 1860 and 1862, both times, there was a Dick family from Saline on board.

Maryann must have lived somewhere in her new country, her father was supposed to have remarried, to whom? He was away a lot, was he back in Scotland. Maryann eloped with Daniel Fraser in 1869.  A large family, the second son was named Andrew Dick Fraser, the next son was Robert Duncan Fraser, Robert is not Fraser family name. Because Maryann eloped to marry her Daniel Fraser, she never saw her father again. Is this a cover up.

What happened to my Andrew Dick, why was Maryann an only child. Was she a love child and was an embarrassment after the drowning of her mother in 1859.

May be you have some information on the Dick Family. Andrew was supposed to have been a wealthy man, and Maryann used to say I should be riding in my carriage if I was in the land of my birth.

Kind regards, looking forward to hearing from you
