Hello Jacqui,
Nice to hear from you. My interest in the Brown family comes from some long standing research into the staff of the railway travelling post office (TPO) during the 19th century. I don't have any Brown ancestors myself.
Sidney Maberly Brown (1817-1898) was one of the longest serving travelling clerks of the TPO, with over 40 years of service.
He was one of at least four children of William Brown (c1776-1850) of Gold St, Northampton and his wife Frances.
William was a Tanner by trade, presumably a successful one, as he was an Alderman and three times Mayor of Northampton (1813-1815).
William's other children that I know about were:
Peach Brown (1802-1851) rose to be a Lt Col in The Indian Army.
Spencer Brown (1815-1901) was a Civil Servant in the War Office.
Catherine, married William Fowler of St Neots in 1831 (referred to as younger daughter of William Brown, but I do not have any info on her sisters).
William Brown was very active in politics in the Radical/Liberal cause. His son Sidney's middle name - Maberly - was in honour of William Leader Maberly, army officer and MP for Northampton, later Secretary of the General Post Office. William was involved in some electoral shenanigans in the 1830s which led to the temporary removal of his Aldermanic priveleges. I now know that he was buried not in Northants but at St Giles Camberwell, Surrey on 4th June 1850.
If you have any info of background interest to the early life of Sidney M Brown in Northampton, I would be interested to hear about this.
Kind Regards,
Alex
