Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Northampton Billing Road Cemetery, lookup please

Sandy, good to hear from you again and many thanks for this useful info. Looks like confirmation that Catherine was the daughter of the William Brown who was Alderman and Mayor of Northampton, as originally supposed.
Regards,
Alex

Hi Jacqui,
The only reference I saw to Catherine was in the NORTHAMPTON Mercury, Sat 24 Sept 1831:
" On Wednesday last, at Tansor, by the Rev Chas Abthorpe Wheelwright, Wm Fowler Esq, Priory, St Neots, to Catherine, youngest daughter of Mr Alderman Brown, of this town".
I assumed that this was Alderman William Brown, but perhaps by 1831 there was another Northampton Alderman called Brown.
Checking Familysearch, only Peach, Spencer and Sidney show up as children of William and Frances Brown baptised in Northampton 1795 - 1820.  So perhaps there were no daughters and Catherine is the daughter of another Brown.
Regards,

Alex

Hello Jacqui,
Nice to hear from you. My interest in the Brown family comes from  some long standing research into the staff of the railway travelling post office (TPO) during the 19th century. I don't have any Brown ancestors myself.
Sidney Maberly Brown (1817-1898) was one of the longest serving travelling clerks of the TPO, with over 40 years of service.
He was one of at least four children of William Brown (c1776-1850) of Gold St, Northampton and his wife Frances.
William was a Tanner by trade, presumably a successful one, as he was an Alderman and three times Mayor of Northampton (1813-1815).
William's other children that I know about were:
Peach Brown (1802-1851) rose to be a Lt Col in The Indian Army.
Spencer Brown (1815-1901) was a Civil Servant in the War Office.
Catherine, married William Fowler of St Neots in 1831 (referred to as younger daughter of William Brown, but I do not have any info on her sisters).
William Brown was very active in politics in the Radical/Liberal cause. His son Sidney's middle name -  Maberly -  was in honour of William Leader Maberly, army officer and MP for Northampton,  later Secretary of the General Post Office. William was involved in some electoral shenanigans in the 1830s which led to the temporary removal of his Aldermanic priveleges. I now know that he was buried not in Northants but at St Giles Camberwell, Surrey on 4th June 1850.
If you have any info of background interest to the early life of Sidney M Brown in Northampton, I would be interested to hear about this.
Kind Regards,

Alex

The Common Room / Re: British Newspaper Archive
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
I have caught up with this topic after experiencing three paid-for sessions and one session at the British Library (BL). Sadly, I can confirm the experience of so many others. The readibility of downloads and the quality of printing outputs are disappointingly poor. Accessing from the the BL does not make it any better.  One wonders if these issues are just early glitches or do they derive from more fundamental problems to do with the quality spec for the scanning? Given the scope of the heroic goals of the project, the BL and Brightsolid need to address these issues urgently. As things stand, the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) comes a poor second to the BL '19th Century British Newspapers' in terms of ease of access and quality of output. Having also used the Irish Newspaper Archive and Trove (the Australian site) the BNA does not exactly stand head and shoulders above either of these. This is worrying in view of the withdrawal to storage in Yorkshire next year (?) of so many original copies currently at BL Colindale and some uncertainty over the availaibility of microfilm copies at BL St Pancras for ALL of these. As a user I was hoping that the much heralded BNA was going to offer the same quality as '19th Century British Newspapers' . Not to be, it seems.

Roscommon / Re: Christopher TAAFFE

Many thanks for the link to the Griffith's Valuation website. I have used the Irish Ancestors search facility for Griffith's previously, but the 'ask about Ireland' site seems much better.
Like yourself, Christopher Taaffe is not my main subject of interest, but the reference I saw also indicated that he was a landowner.
Separately, I saw a report of a court case in the Freeman's Journal for July 1852 which mentioned that Taaffe's land had been the subject of a Chancery case since 1813. However this land appeared to be in Co Mayo, so I am not sure if it was the same Taaffe.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

Regards,

Alex

Hello,
Does anyone have any info on a Christopher TAAFFE of Rockwood, Roscommon, circa 1820s, please?  I have  references to him in memorials in the Registry of Deeds, Dublin, but nothing further.

Regards,

Alex

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: NORTHAMPTON BILLING ROAD CEMETERY LOOKUP PLEASE

Many thanks for your quick reply, Sandy.

I have already checked the available records for the old parish churchyards in Northampton.
I think I will need to look further afield as William Brown's sons moved away from Northampton when they were young men and he may well have been living with them when he died.

Thanks again for your help.

Best Regards,

Alex

I'm looking for a burial record for William BROWN, who died in the period 1847-1852.  If anyone can look for him in the Billing Road cemetery records, I'll be most grateful.
(William Brown was three times mayor of Northampton in the 1812-1815 period).

Regards,

Alex
