Argyllshire / Re: Birth of Angus Beaton-Argyllshire
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
The 1851 Census of young Neil with much older aunt & uncle gives the answer as to who Angus' parents are. The aunt/uncle have to belong to Angus' side due to age, and indeed they do. The best Mull website is MullFamilies  http://www.mullfamilies.co.uk/  and that site has the answer (aunt/uncle Christina/Donald both died 1862 Dervaig). I suspect that Angus was born closer to 1792 ** OR ** he may have actually been a grandson brought up as a son (this was quite common). Angus' parents were married 1768 Kilninian parish, Mull

Margaret Stewart died Mull 1922

1922   CONNELLY   MARGARET       STEWART   F   83   KILNINIAN AND KILMORE   /ARGYLL   544/02 0001

Her son  Charles married and had children (I have six children listed)

One of those children died 1918 aged 2 (Iain = John, and possible origin of 1918 death). Another Iain was born in 1919

1918   CONNELLY   IAIN           M   2   KILNINIAN AND KILMORE   /ARGYLL   544/02 0004

BIRTH 1919   CONNELLY   IAIN   M   KILNINIAN AND KILMORE   /ARGYLL   544/02 0005

I found that Charles Connelly was born 1878 Dalziel, Lanarkshire, and noted another two male births around the same time : whether these are yours, I have no idea. I also don't know when/where son John was born (nor the parents of Margaret Stewart).

Thomas Connelly 1877 Dalziel
August Connelly 1875 Dalziel

I'd appreciate the 1873 marriage BDM and especially Margaret's 1922 death record, and in return I'll give all details that I have.

Skoosh - great stuff. I'm heading back to Mull in Sep for my 65th. Intend taking more headstone pics for my website.

Monica : I'm always on the lookout for Mull "strays". I now need someone to let me know details of the wife & children of Duncan McGilvray, with dates.  Always happy to help where I can too.

Yes, Burg was occupied by Chrissie McGilvray, niece of said Duncan. She didn't get electricity at her home until the late 1980s, shortly before her death.  I have pics of Chrissie and one of her father Malcolm (with cows) on site

Further to all of the above and per JMStrachan, Duncan appears in the 1861 Census in the next village of Tapul (Tavool).
I believe that this is the correct Duncan, simply because it has to be.

1861 Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon    District  1   Page 4   Tapul House
McPhail    Ann    25     Head     Farmer of 3000 acres    Argyllshire Torosay
McPhail    Mary    17     Sister     Housekeeper    Argyllshire Torosay
McGillivary    John    39     Servant     Shepherd    Argyllshire Kilfinichen
McPherson    Donald    19     Servant     Shepherd    Argyllshire Kilmore
McLauchlin    Lachlan    19     Servant     Ploughman    Argyllshire Movern
McLaine    Margaret     23     Servant     Domestic Servant    Argyllshire Kilfinichen
McGillivary    Duncan    9     Servant     Cowherd    Argyllshire Torosay ****

Burg was part of Torosay parish before it was included within Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon.

Although his age is 9, this probably means in his ninth year, so actually 8. This fits very well with brother Malcolm 1851, Duncan 1853 and Alexander 1856.

I have Duncan's parents, grandparents and G-grandparents details on site.

Argyllshire / Re: Fletcher of Mull

Mary Fletcher 16 Apr 1844 Salen is likely to be yours. I hve her death as 23 Dec 1918, but don't know where. The one born 1856 Salen, was to Alexander/Catherine McPhail

Many times i've seen a  mother's death record which gives her married name instead of maiden, so Black is probably correct

As for the discrepancy in age, this will be due to emigration. Many ages were deliberately given incorrectly to allow passage (amongst other things)

Duncan Fletcher's maternal grandparent's were Donald Fletcher 1725-1804 (died Glasgow) & Catherine McPhail 1745-1829 (died Torosay. Mull). Their daughter Mary (Duncan's mother) 1762-1855 (died Salen, Mull)

This is all written up in great detail on my own website

Stirlingshire / Re: Rutherford family from Bonnybridge
« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 17:38 BST (UK)  »
hi - stumbled accross this while researching people connected to Mull.

I was writing up the death of William Rutherford, born about 1850 (where ?). He died Salen, Mull  20 Nov 1881 (Informant - Donald Fletcher, friend).

The IGI has his marriage as Tradeston and not Gorbals. Please confirm which if you have the BDM.

Also, his wife Margaret Hendry/Hendrie born 1856 Kirkintilloch. Which one please ? (the IGI is showing two births)

I'm really surprised that nobody has told you that McVurich can be Anglicized to CURRIE (or CURRY)
