Westmeath / Re: Any Info on Christopher Kelly, Ballynacargy, RC, born about 1856
« on: Sunday 26 August 12 03:08 BST (UK)  »
Shane, you are correct with respect to the Christopher Kelly 1901 census result.  When I first discovered it - looking at LDS records in Salt Lake City about 15 years ago - I still had 2 mysteries:  1) where was his wife (the expanded form says he is married - not a widower), and 2) where was my grandfather Michael?

Further investigation with LDS records yielded this:

http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Westmeath/Kilbixy/Ballynacarrigy/1779870/

Note the location.  He and a young sister is staying with an older sister, with a different (married) surname.  The age and location matches Michael's birth certificate.

I believe that when I mentioned the marriage certificate in my initial posting, I was referring to Michael's, not Christopher's - I dont believe I have the latter's.  Both parents were listed as deceased in 1920, and I cannot find either in 1911, so the family story of Christopher's death in 1903/4 remains possible.

Thanks to all here - my second cousin Pat contacted me by email, we are now FaceBook friends, and we will start the info exchange soon.

Mike Kelly

Good point.  It was all UK at that time, I suppose, so there may not really be any immigration-related records.

Julz,

Thanks very much for responding.  I have the marriage certificate for Michael and Catherine somewhere, and I suspect that you have the right couple.  It was that marriage certificate that tells me that both of Michael's parents were dead when they were married in 1920.

I found the family in the 1901 Irish census in Ballynacargy, Westmeath, Ire in 1901.  There is a gap of information between 1901 and 1920.  I will probably have to look for all the Kellys in the 1911 census there.  If I cant find them, that would imply the move to Scotland had already occurred, and I would have to look for ship travel records between Dublin and Glasgow.

Unfortunately, I dont know the names of the other two pair of twins.

Lanarkshire / 3 Reilly girls from Glenboig married 3 Kelly boys from Westmeath Ire
« on: Monday 12 January 09 01:05 GMT (UK)  »
Catherine (Kate) Reilly was one of 3 sisters who married 3 Kelly brothers in the Glenboig area around 1920.  Her parents were Joseph Reilly (born in Westmeath Ire around 1849, died in Glenboig in 1932) and Margaret Whealan (Wheelighan) born around 1854 in Gartcosh, died in 1928 in Glenboig.

The 3 Kelly boys (Kate married Michael) must have moved from Ballynacargy, Westmeath, after 1901, but before 1920.  Their dad Christopher may have been killed in a barroom brawl around 1903, which may have resulted in the family moving to Scotland.  The mom's name was Anne, who also died by 1920.

Any information about these Kellys or Reillys would be appreciated.

Thanks again, Nipy.  I will definitely consider it.

Nipy,

Thank you very much for your detailed response!  The parish name is very helpful.  Lawrence Molloy was apparently my ggg-grandfather, if the 55yo family history book I am using as a reference is correct.  Both his dad and son were named Michael, unless the book messed up.  I hadnt checked Griffiths for him, but I will.  I also saw some evidence of multiple McCormick spellings, but I tend to see "ick" the most.

The Patrick McC you mention does not appear to be a direct ancestor of mine.  Mine were Edward McCormick, born around 1790; his son was Edward, born 1815 (died 1900 in New York state); and his son was John McCormick, born in Horseleap in 1844.

I will ask around the area when I come over in March.

Thanks again!

Cork / Toomeys in Cork early 1800s (note spelling), also Dwyer
« on: Monday 05 January 09 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
My relative Patrick Toomey was born in Cork around April 30, 1820, parish unknown.  His birth transcript does not match any listed online so far, so he may be from south Cork, maybe Cork city.

He went to the USA around 1847, and settled in Cohoes, NY.  Another Patrick Toomey also settled in Cohoes, but that one went on to New England.  Mine went on to Forestburgh, NY, eventually.

Patrick's father was Humphrey Toomey, and his mom was Julia Dwyer, both apparently from Cork.

Does this register with anyone?

Thanks.

Westmeath / McCormicks at Bracca (Maires Estate) and Cartron's Glebe near Horseleap
« on: Monday 05 January 09 22:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have general interest in Bracca, once part of the Maires estate, near Horseleap.  My relatives  Edward McCormick and wife Honora Dalton McCormick once lived there.  Their son Edward married Betty Molloy, and had John J. McCormick in 1844, who moved to the USA with them around 1850.

Betty Molloy came from Cartron's Glebe, next door to Bracca, but maybe in Offaly.  It was still standing in 1981.  I think Molloys still lived there in the early 1950s.

I have general interest in both places.  I will be in Ireland in late March.  I am wondering if my relatives still live there.
