East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Re: Smith and Finlayson of Haddington etc.

Mungo and Katharine are my GGGG grandparents, but I've never managed to establish their origins with any certainty.
A Mungo FINLAYSON was baptised in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh 14 May 1742, which would have made him 32 at the time of marriage, but is it, indeed, our Mungo?
The only remotely likely Katharine / Katherine Millar baptism I've found is 1733 so she doesn't fit but she could be this Katherine's mother.
I would assume that the they are all related as Haddington isn't very big even now and the fact that Mungo was a witness makes it even more likely.
More research needed - if more information is available.

Hello all,

Is it possible to date this silhouette portrait? I understand that there isn't much information but some people on here are very clever with these things. We are thinking George IV period but have no idea how accurate that is.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you very much indeed.
Useful and filled in a few gaps and, of course, asked a few questions that I'm now trying to solve.
All the best

Thank you very much, Max D.
I'll look into that and see if it all makes sense now.

Armed Forces / DecipheringWilliam Joseph Newton's records

Hello All,
Cany one help us to understand the attached record, in particular the letters and number under the GC (Good Conduct) column and the comment under the If discharged column immediately below Cells 14 days. WJN appears to have left his wife and child around this time and gone off the rails in an apparently atypical way and we are trying to work out what was going on.
Thank you for anything

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Thomas King b. c. 1859, Portsea

Hello cider drinker,
That's marvellous. Thank you so much. I don't know any way of proving it but it makes as much sense as any other story we've come up with. The only real question is why on earth their birth years are so at variance in the two censuses before 1911. I don't imagine we'll ever know; maybe they were drunk. Haha!
Thanks again for all your efforts.
