Australia / Re: NSW BDM online UPGRADE June 2014

I am disappointed this morning to find that the links to the old style searches have been redirected to the new web page. More disappointed that the performance/response does not appear to improved since the "upgrade" in June.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Family Giles

I'm not sure if my GILES line fits in here, but I am hopeful.

I’m looking for some help with a brick wall that I’m having trouble with.
The known details I have at this stage are as follow;
Charles and Lydia married on 11th August 1851 in the Parish of Stepney in the County of Middlesex. Both are stated to be of “full” age, unmarried, residing in Stepney. Charles was a Stonemason and his father, Henry, a labourer. Lydia’s father, William, was a butcher.

They travelled to Australia aboard the “Ellenborough” with their two sons, Charles (2), and William (1)(died on voyage), arriving 31st October 1854.
Charles died 4th January 1886 aged 57 in Newcastle, NSW. His death certificate states that he was married at age 23, his parents are unknown, and that he had been in the colony 31 years.
Children of the marriage were Charles b 31/5/1852, William b 1852, Zipporah b 12/2/1858, Annie b 2/1/1860, William b 20/8/1861, Alfred b 1863, Stephen b 1866, Hannah b 1869, Emily b 1870, Amelia b 1874, Charlotte b 1876. I also have found in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, what I believe to be, an illegitimate child belonging to Lydia named Mark Capien Pine.

I’ve been looking in the 1841 & 1851 censuses for a Charles of about the right age with a father Henry without success. The closest I have so far is a family in Middlesex with a Charles of the right age with a father James and mother Rebecca.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Charles was a Stonemason.
The 1851 census with Rebecca is the one I did find.

Thanks Mark

Thanks for you reply. Here is more info on the pair. Charles' death certificate shows date of death as 4 Jan 1886 aged 57, so dob abt 1828. Lydia's death certificate shows date of death as 12 Jun 1915 aged 81, so dob abt 1834. The marriage certificate shows their ages as "full", witnesses are "E Pine" and "Reyna Pine". I believe that they are 2 of Lydia's older siblings.
The couple emigrated to Australia aboard the "Ellenborough" in 1854 with their two sons Charles Henry b. 31/5/1852 Stepney, and William b. abt 1853 Stepney. I also believe that Lydia had a child, Mark Capien Pine, before she was married, and he was sent to "Childrens Establishment Stepney Union"

I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate from the GRO for Charles GILES and Lydia PINE 11th August 1851 in the Parish of Stepney in the County of Middlesex. It states that Charles, a Stone mason, was the son of Henry GILES, a labourer, and Lydia, was the daughter of William PINE, a Butcher.
I have not been able to find any census results for a Charles with a father Henry. I did find one result with a father James and mother Rebecca.
I am hoping that someone could help shed some light on Charles' family.

Isaac (Jr), his wife Frances Barnett and their children Isaac, Judith, Spencer, Edwin and Henry set sail for Australia aboard the "Juliana". Frances gave birth to Taber 1/1/1839 and she died 18/1/1839 shortly before arriving at the Cape of Good Hope. The "Juliana" was shipwrecked just outside the harbour, no lives were lost. They stayed in the Cape of Good Hope until a vessel could be arranged for the completion of their journey. Taber died before that occurred. The "Morayshire" took about half of the passengers from the "Juliana" to Australia, the Reece's were among them. Young Henry died on board on 21/3/1839. An excellent book on the subject is called Isaac's Journey - The last voyage of the emigrant ship Juliana by Dr Ian Reece.

Antrim / Re: Charters Family of Antrim

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm in Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

Other members of the family that I have are, Father Robert, Mother Margaret Ryan, both deceased before 1853.

A brother Jerimiah b. abt 1816 and his wife Bridget Gleeson along with 7 children arrived in Australia in 1852 aboard "Rajahgopaul".

My thinking is that Tipperary is a fair way from Antrim, so a link is going to be a bit of a strectch.

Hi Lazarus,
I am researching the CHARTERS family and have seen others posts by you regarding WSEM CHARTERS. I have an old letter from a ggmother that says one of her ancestors was the person that Charters Towers was named after. Now my CHARTERS is not WSEM CHARTERS, but I would be interested to find out if there is any link between the two. My man is Charles CHARTERS b. abt 1821 Tromarara, Tipperary, Ireland. Immigration to Australia 8 June 1853 aboard "Australia".
