Ireland / Re: FamilySearch - Has anyone been successful ...
« on: Monday 27 September 10 00:53 BST (UK)  »
I am at the labs.familysearch.org and after doing a search, I clicked on a particular promising entry.  After notating the film, vol, etc information ... there's a link to search the collection ... then you can choose the digital folder. A viewer comes up on the next screen stating loading image ... but nothing ever happens. I've tried it on several entries.

Has anyone been able to view these images yet? Or it is just me?

Good question Barbara.

I'm not an expert on these matters but as far as I know, a Beta site is one that is currently under test in a 'real world' environment. Usually the people running a Beta test will ask for feedback on which functions are working and welcome and which parts of the program are not working or not needed.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the LDS site will have an image-view link to Ancestry.com on a ppv basis.

That's probably why you can't currently view the images.

Oh i know were they live inside out its just down the road from me. But i was looking for someone who actually had the records or could check it out for me as i don't think you can do that on the internet?

If it's just down the road, would it not make sense to walk down there and ask at the nearest Orange Lodge?

Sometimes the simplest things work best.

trying to find when  thomas stewart born troqueer kirkcudbightshire  1865 went to ireland?

he's gone to ireland after 1871. Back in scotland 1889ish with wife/partner helen and two daughters ethel and alice. they go on to have helen about 1894, then two boys james ( my grandfather ) and thomas born in ayr 1897 and 1899.

From your second post I presume you have found him in 1871 UK Census and found him again in 1891. So far you haven't found him in 1881 and have reason to believe he was in Ireland during this time. Maybe birthplace Ireland for some of his children?

If you can give a bit more detail here I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Tipperary / Re: Can someone take some photos for me in Bansha?

Hi Mark,

I was down there today and took a few pictures which I'll download from the camera as soon as I can locate the USB lead.

From the Griffiths map above, the Boyce land consisted of 5 fields on the East side of the road and 2 fields on the West side.

This is the same view as shown on the OSI map (Historic 6") at http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,599586,631208,7

It appears that the 5 fields on the East side have now been knocked together to make one big field and the 2 on the West side have also been knocked into one. The remains of the building is at the extreme South West corner of the field on the East side of the road. From the OSI map (link above) you will see that there were originally two building very close to each other. The largest of these (probably the dwelling house) slightly North of the smaller (probably an outhouse).

It will be a lot clearer if you go to the link above and flick between the 6” Historical, Street Map (Beta) and 2005 Ortho maps.

There are now two modern farm gates at this point. Only 1 wall of the old building remains. I think this is all that's left of the outhouse with no obvious sign of the dwelling.

I'll let you know as soon as the photos are ready to upload.

With all due respects Hallmark, you're not making it easy.

Hi Mark

If you look at the Ordinance Survey maps at http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,599508,631482,7

it might help.

The point your red arrow indicates doesn't have a house or anything much worh photographing.

I will be down that way this weekend so if you send me a PM I will see what I can do.

Yes, it's the original person I'm trying to get to but am still wondering what would be on the manuscript in the Library. You have yours from the past to present times, I'm just trying to find out if this manuscript would contain lineage from present back in time to the original grantee.

If I knew who it was originally granted to then I wouldn't need it, which is why I'm asking if anyone knows what would be on the Copy of Confirmation of Arms granted to...., son of...  would it name the grantee??

or has anyone experience of this please?

Grant of Arms was a device whereby land was exchanged for title. Omnce the land was transferred and the title bestowed, nobody was bothered to trace either back or forwrd from there.

Your question is a little unclear:

Have you traced from yourself back to a Grant of Arms and want to use that to go back further?

Or have you found a Grant of Arms and wonder if someone can trace it forward to you?

Please elucidate.

Try this site for general distribution of a surname:

http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

You will find that McNulty is most common in Mayo and Donegal.
