Hello Switcha,
I know it is frustrating but I can't connect any of your names and dates to mine. I have lots of names like Mary, Margaret, Ellen etc, and the same names were in almost every family in Ireland at that time.
In one of my previous posts in Rootschat I have given the names of my Fogarty relatives.
Good luck in your research

Hi Leadjog. Thanks for your interest. It's a long time since I asked that question and still have not found a connection to my Dowling family. I have almost given up as I'm now very old and none of my children is interested in genealogy yet.
Thanks also to Felixquaxer and Dathai. I will have a look at the links and let you know if I find anything new.

Mayo / Re: Blake Lookup Please

Hi June.

Today I made another visit to the presbytery to check the marriage records. Sorry to say there was no
Blake in that index either. Perhaps your great-grandparents lived in the rural area near Westport which is the parish of Kilmeena. The church records for Kilmeena are very difficult to research.  As far as I know they are not on film in the National Library in Dublin. Only part of the records remain after a fire in Kilmeena church some years ago, and they are held by the Clew Bay heritage centre in Westport. You might like to ask them to do a search but they charge quite a lot.
Best wishes.
Eve.

Saw your message a few days ago and decided to try, as I live in Westport.
Today I asked the Catholic parish secretary in Westport but unfortunately there is NO Blake in the index for the baptisms.
This does not neccessarily mean that Thomas was baptised elsewhere. The original book of baptisms is in such poor condition that a lot of the entries are illegible.
Very disappointing as I had hoped to surprise you with some information.
Is it possible that he could have been baptised in the Protestant church?

Thank you Scrimnet.

Lots of information there but I still don't know which, if any, of the soldiers is my mothers' uncle.

What a pity that few of us ask the questions while the parents and grandparents are still living.

The search goes on.

Thank you, gentlemen.

Your comments have been very helpful.

Both of my grand-uncles enlisted in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
If one of them is included in the photo, it must be the older man, as his younger brother was killed in action in July 1916. I don't have a confirmed picture of either of them.

There is another picture among my mothers things which could possibly be her uncle. The picture is not in my possession right now but I will ask my sister to post it. The soldier is wearing a uniform different from those in the above picture and he has a woman beside him who could possibly be his French wife and I think he resembles one of the soldiers in the above picture.

It might take a few hours to get in touch with my sister.

Wow. Thank you Phil. Ainslie, Pete and Scrimnet.

I have to admit that I am totally ignorant of military matters and terms and abbreviations.

This photo was among the things that were guarded by my late mother and I have only recently seen it for the first time. Two of her uncles joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. The youngest was killed in France in 1916 and his brother was injured in France and married his French nurse and never returned to Ireland.

Is it possible that any of the men in the picture could be members of the RDF.

The picture looks quite formal and I wonder is it possible that there could be a copy somewhere in military archives which might contain the names of the soldiers.
