Thank you, there is a Family History Centre in my area, though their opening hours conflict with my work times, that is an excellent option.

That sounds quite reasonable. I shall investigate that option! Many thanks  :)

Thank you for the suggestion, I will see what I am able to access online for Kent and Oxfordshire.

Thanks Queenie. I too tried the King angle but got nowhere. If they were friends, or family, would this poor woman have been left to give birth in a barn and not invited into the house? Perhaps they were travelling through and were strangers. It is quite mysterious!

Oxfordshire / Ancestor born in a barn near Chinnor 1717

I am tracing a possible ancestor named Elizabeth Doyley, who married Samuel Ginger at Chinnor in 1734 (both say they were of that parish but married by licence. My Samuel was from Stone in Bucks.). I have narrowed a birth for her down to an Elizabeth Dowley, baptised 7 April 1717 at Chinnor. Written in Latin, I have translated it as: "Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Dowley of Woolwich in the county of Kent born in a barn of Richard King (senior?) of Hinton."

I can't find anyone by the name of Dowley in the region but a lot of families named Doyley in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. I can't find anyone in Kent or London that is a match with Thomas but I have very little to go on. On Elizabeth's marriage she is recorded as Doyley. I may have the wrong person, however, I am curious as to why she was born in Richard King's barn! I have access to Ancestry and have looked through the Oxon PRs but I'm not sure if I'm on track.

Any advice or assistance will be gratefully received. Thank you  :)

Buckinghamshire / Drayton Beauchamp parish records

I have been searching for years, in vain, for the family of Sarah Mead, who was born circa 1775 at Drayton Beauchamp, as appears consistently in census records as her birthplace. I think she may fit with the family of Edmund and Elizabeth Mead, who had two children baptised in Drayton in 1772 and 1783. They had a daughter Sarah baptised in 1779 at Buckland, a short distance from Drayton. One son, Michael, later lived in Aylesbury, where Sarah settled with her husband, so I think I am on the right path. Elizabeth Mead died in 1801 and was buried at Drayton. I have only managed to find the baptisms of the three children through Find My Past indexes, as records don't exist anywhere else. I am willing to subscribe to anything which has Buckinghamshire parish registers but none of the internet resources include Drayton. My only option appears to be a research service through the Buckinghamshire Record Office, which is very expensive per look-up, and I don't have dates for anyone aside from these baptisms. I'm not sure where Edmund and Elizabeth originated, which makes it hard to put together the missing pieces of this family.

Any advice or assistance to find information without spending a fortune would be most welcome!

Dorset Completed Look up Requests / Re: Childs and Hurlstone of Melbury Osmond

Hi Kirsten,

I haven't been able to connect Samuel to Joseph. There were so many Childs in the area and I was sure most would marry up but as yet they do not. Samuel's parents Thomas and Margaret were poor and I have not been able to find much about them.

My Childs research has not gone as far forward as the timeframe for your Charlotte. I hope someone else can help.

Cheers,

Kelly.
