Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with occupations please - Completed
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
The spelling of the name on certificates has a lot to do with how literate the person filling in the registration form was, it certainly looks like it has an E at the end on the birth certificate copy I have for Colin in 1857 although I have still to verify that this is the same person. He is registered with no middle name & illegitimate although the Mother's name & occupation match. I plan to visit Edinburgh next month to spend the day at the records office so hoping to clear some of this up then.  Interestingly, Agnes changed her name about and became Agnes Wardrop Campbell on her son Colin's birth certificate. He was born in 1901, Colin Campbell Davis and his son, born in 1931 was also Colin Campbell Davis so there is certainly a family tradition there.
If you have anything else to ask or pass on & feel more comfortable with PM, that's fine.

My 1st husband is the descendant. His GG Grandmother was Agnes Campbell Wardrop so a younger sister of your G Grandfather. I have found 10 children but have only verified the one in our family. She married Henry Davis in 1901 but further research (a lot of further research) has shown him to actually be Henry Kendall born in Lancaster. They had 4 children, 3 of whom I can find no trace in Scotland after the 1911 census. Very frustrating & to be honest, I haven't worked on this section of the family for a while. Maybe it's time I had another look. If you wouldn't mind sharing your relative's dob & death, if you know it, that would be great. Thanks

Sorry, don't have that either, all I have is his marriage, census & children's births. I was working back from them when I got well & truly stuck!
I also have his wife's birth & death certs.
He was still alive when his son Colin was married in 1926

Can't find his birth either but he was 21 when he married on 1/1/1901 so he would have been born about 1879.

I have had people look on England sites for me with no luck there either. I have no idea how to search for English births etc. especially where there is no county given.

He was a mason. Already died by the date of Henry's marriage in 1901 & mother was alive & now Elizabeth McWhinnie. Can't find any trace of her 2nd marriage either.

Occupation Interests / How many types of mason?
« on: Saturday 23 July 11 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I have a marriage cert which states groom's father, John Davies (deceased) occupation mason. Is this the same as stonemason or are there other types? I can find no birth, marriage or death for this John Davies & thought maybe his occupation would help me trace him.
Thanks

Scotland / Why can't I find them on SP?
« on: Saturday 23 July 11 16:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for advice (again) on Henry Davis/Davies & his parents, John Davies & Elizabeth McWhinnie formerly Davies ms Chorley. On 1901 Glasgow census, he is listed as Harris Davis born in England. I'm pretty sure that he is Henry as the main occupier, George Vallance, at the address was witness at Henry's marriage to Mary McTear in 1901. Also, 1911 census has him born in England. I can find no record of his birth or his parent's marriage although on IGI there is a submitted entry which has them married in Hutchesontown about 1877. Also, states Elizabeth McWhinnie Chorley born there about 1862. I did ask on the England forum but no-one can find them married in England so far. I have searched on SP & can't find any records for them at all. Elizabeth obviously remarried a Mr McWhinnie, it's not her middle name. John Davies was deceased by 1901. Sorry to be so long winded but it's such a mixup. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

England / Re: Born in England - but where?
« on: Friday 22 July 11 00:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi Carole

Yes he did. That's another mystery as her father was Colin Campbell Wardrop & eventually just Colin Campbell.
Annie Davie is another branch of the family where Davis married Davie, just to confuse things.

Re the census, I'm assuming that Mary is a mistake & should be Agnes as the main householder, George Vallance, was a witness at the marriage.

Mo - fathers occupation was mason

thanks both of you for trying to help
