Lanarkshire / Re: WELLWYND CHURCHYARD, AIRDRIE
« on: Monday 28 March 22 17:40 BST (UK)  »
I was married by the the minister of the High Church in Airdrie, my own minister being on holiday at the time.  The High Church/Kirk is situated in North Bridge Street, very close to the High Street so that might be how it got it’s name.  I don’t know the history of the church.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What do you make of "zitt wast"?
« on: Monday 28 March 22 11:02 BST (UK)  »
In the Hearth Tax records for Dunbartonshire on ScotlandsPlaces (E69/7/1/10) the transcription of the highlighted line is "given ovir as zitt wast". Any help with this phrase would be appreciated.

This film brings back so many memories of living in Reidvale Street in the 1950s.

Thank you for your replies.  The NLS film shows Mr Robert Baxter wearing the same uniform as the man in my photo so I think it must be a Baxter's bus.  I travelled on the green Baxter's buses twice a week as a child going between Glasgow and Airdrie.  I was delighted to see many scenes of Airdrie in the 50s in the film.  I have still to follow up with the Facebook page.

Lanarkshire / Can anyone identify the vehicle?

I'm trying to date this photo from the vehicle in order to pin down who the subjects might be.  It came with photos belonging to my grandmother so they may be family connections.

This is the photo of my grandfather which I tried to attach to my last post.

My apologies to everyone who replied to my post, especially those of you who went to the trouble of restoring the photo.  I haven't posted on Rootschat for a while.  When I did so before I received emails to tell me that I had received a reply to my post.  It was just by chance that I discovered your replies.  Many many thanks.
I will attach photos of my grandfather but I doubt if he was ever a telegram boy.  We come from a mining family.
My other thought was that it was that it might be this boy, but again I am probably wrong.
Birth: WOTHERSPOON JAMES   M   1895   652/1 119    Old Monkland (Western District)
Death: 1910   May   6   Kenmuirhill No 2   Lanark   Glasgow Coal Co Ltd
James Wotherspoon   15   Office Boy   was run over when Caledonian Railway Co.'s engine was shunting a waggon.
James Wotherspoon, Colliery Clerk, Kenmuirhill Colliery, Mount Vernon
Usual residence 26B Crosshill, Baillieston 15 years
Father: James Wotherspoon, blacksmith      Mother: Elizabeth Parker
RCE Cause of death: The deceased while at the railway l… at No.2 Kenmuirhill Colliery attempted to snibble the wheel of a moving waggon and was completely caught by the snibble, thrown on the rail, run over and instantly killed, as per Verdict of Jury, Airdrie 6 July 1910
Such a very sad story.  The attached card has been passed down through the family.  The Wotherspoons were good neighbours of my grandparents in Baillieston..
I will try to find out if any cousins worked for the GPO.  Following a lead in the past I searched for a "cousin" who "rose to be head of the Post Office in Edinburgh" but have never found him.
The photo I have also attached which includes my grandfather dates from around 1922.
My post with attachments received an error message so I have removed them.

This photo was among my late aunt's family photos. It was probably taken in Lanarkshire.  The image measures 1x1.25 inches and the mount measures 2.4x2.8 inches.
I would be grateful for help with restoration and a possible date when it was taken in order to decide if it might be my grandfather as a boy.  I need help with the uniform too but perhaps I should enquire elsewhere about that?

Lanarkshire / Re: Gavin Black of Craignook
« on: Tuesday 14 November 17 14:56 GMT (UK)  »
Gavin Black of Rawyards is my Ancestor.  I believe his parents were John Black and Janet Black, for whom banns were called in New Monkland and Torphichen in 1702.  Based on the naming pattern for their chidren the father of John may have been called Gavin.  Of Craigneuk????
I have this from the Scottish Mining website
1684
NEW MONKLAND.
John Thomson, Feuer in Gartqueen.
John Russell, Portioner of Eastfield.
William Craig, in Airdrie Miln.
John Thomson, son to James Thomson, in Airdrie Muir.
John Keddar, in Airdrie town, now Cottar in Rashbush.
Gavin Black, in Craigneuk, in Monklands Land.
John Thomson, in Shiels of Auchingray.
John Gardner, in Gartly, son to John Gardner there.
Samuel Yuil, in Laend.
John Martin, in Drumbowie.
John Martin, his son.
Patrick Yuil, in Braikenhirst, son to Alexander Yuil there.
Thomas Gentles, in Habbisdub.
William Ker, in Rochsoles, now Weaver in Airdrie.
William Waddell, in Riding.
Alexander Martin, in Overshank.
----- Russell, younger, in Meadowhead.
William Dobbie, Webster in Blackbog.

John Black (of Rawyards) may be a younger son of Gavin Black of Craigneuk. I think I have a sasine somewhere to do with his purchase of Rawyards, whereas I think the Black family already owned land at Craigneuk.
The Gavin Black in the painting (1802-1871) is the great-grandson of Gavin Black (of Rawyards) and Mary Wotherspoon.
