Gloucestershire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: WILKES of Gloucestershire
« on: Tuesday 16 June 15 02:01 BST (UK)  »
A good deed and very interesting, I left my start too late and both parents and most aunts / uncles had passed. However it was a burning need to solve discrepancies in past information and the inheritance of some very interesting documents. A cousins research on one branch helped as something to attach new found detail. With good software and the internet its a pleasure.

The pain is not being able to share new info with my parents who I feel sure were happy with any  rumour of the day, and of that era were happy to let be.

Very interesting, a post of long ago attracts interest. Guess it says something for the benefit of such a forum. I have had contact with Warren in the past and thank him for his information of previous. You both have valued info on Edwin and family. Of the Wilkes Migrants Charles and Mary, Sons Samuel Hickling, William and Edwin with Eleonor Piggin sister of Mary arrived Sydney 1854 onboard "Kate". Charles was born in Australia. My Great Grandfather was William and ran a coach service from Pymble to Milsons Point (culd have been Blues point) to connect with the ferry service to Sydney. This was discontinued as the rail service completed on the North Shore, Hornsby to the Harbour and then the Bridge. The family ended with Drays contracted to the council on road and construction projects in the Kuringai Municipality, also operating a stone quarry at Killara.

Just some insite to my bit of history

The motorbike looks to be 1920's. I note the abscence of motor vehicles, might mean something. By date not many vehicles available but not even a horse drawn cart. Plenty of bicycles.

With the vessels slipped a careened so close to the waters edge it is not open sea in Australia. Note the ketch in the distance, not a small vessel. I would expect the waterway to be an inland lake or well sheltered coastal bay.

The vessels are all sleek styled sailing craft and not fishing fleet, I would expect a mix of fishing vessels in most waterways of the time.

I don't believe the houses to be Australian architecture of any time.

I think Europe is the answer but still puzzled.

Conoly's Bush or whatever recording is now Connels point, Charles had a farm there and is buried at the Church of England St George/ Hurstville which also had many names.
Greville's Post Office Directory for 1872 has Mary listed as freeholder, Conolly's Bush, Gannon's Forrest (Hurstville)
Charles lived in the Waterloo Estate around Botany Road / Wyndham Street / Raglan Street and was a builder / stone mason. Indentures issued over the period of 1855 to 1862 for leases of properties to various others for up to periods of 99 years.

This is just some of my recorded detail, I differed from the Hurstville Historical Society research on Charles connection to Berkeley which I eliminated and followed up through Gloucester City Area.

Yes there is a connection. Your grandfather Charles Henry son of Edwin Robert, then my connection is from William a brother of Edwin Robert (Samuel Hickling, William and Edwin Robert original immigrants with parents Charles and Mary Piggin). The family of William ended up in Lindfield with Coaches and drays then dairy on what is now Killara Golf links.

Do search for a freebie called ID Photo Studio, If you crop a photo to the appropriate size/ratio then print to required dimension.

Technical Help / Re: new Cd Ram drive

Is the problem linked to CD/DVD, high content discs can be on dual layer DVD discs and the ROM device might be only CD 700MB type. That said I would imagine any new PC to contain DVD dual layer type ROM device.

I have included a link to a one name study which seems to be a very good example of a published product.

In another instance 'one name study listings' have put me onto a collector of names for my family name, in such a case I need contact the custodian of this study to make enquiries as required. It all helps in the end.
