Thanks Max. As far as I know he was involved at some time in mine clearance but not sure how long.

World War Two / Shoulder Badge
« on: Wednesday 06 November 19 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
This is my late father, Eric Davies. He served with the Royal Engineers during WW2. The picture shows him as a Lance Corporal - he went on to become a Corporal. My query is about the shoulder patch which is partially visible in the picture. Can anyone recognise what it might be?

Hi,
Not sure if its the right house but www.blackcountryhistory.org has an 1811 etching under The Leasowes. Picture of lake with house behind.
Looks a grand house.

I think that's the one at Halesowen Cathy. Far too grand to be the house I remember! :D

I found this on the Black Country History site. It shows Leasowes House, Merry Hill, which I believe is the house you're looking for. The pic shows the Jones family outside the front of the house

It seems that the original poster is now registered as a guest, so probably won't see your reply, patriciap. I tried accessing his profile unable to do so.

I've studied the image long and hard and am convinced that it says "Bonegal" - look, in particular, at the loop beneath the "G" which wouldn't be there in Brewood.

Quite right Ray, I missed the loop as it's quite faint on the picture. Bonegal would probably be a mis-spelling of Boningale. The enumerator seemingly copied it down phonetically - something most of us have come across on census returns!

My first thought when looking at the image was Brewood.
Worth a look perhaps?

Some lovely, evocative pictures there Jool. The text also tells what many people were thinking at the time about the cause of the fire. Sad that that wonderful facade couldn't be saved, even if the rest had to come down! Another piece of history consigned to the scrapheap called progress.

To be honest Jool, I was more than a little suspicious about that fire. It was extremely convenient in that it opened up the possibility of further development that would have been impossible had the old arcade had to have been incorporated into the centre. Just a personal opinion and I could be wrong! I loved the old Central Arcade and remember the old toy shop (but not it's name!), the gents outfitters (Rosenshines?), and the Blind Institute shop at the bottom by the steps.
