Yes Shainie

That’s Willems family. He was the last to live with old Guilroy in Leonard Stanley where he’s buried. I know the descendants of Curry’s family and I’ve heard about the woman who drowned. Private message me and I’ll send you the pictures. If you go on Eric trudgill’s gypsy genealogy website all our breed are on there under the heading Merryk Lock.

Hello Shanie.

Which William Smith are you talking about ?
Is it Willem who lost an eye to a peg knife?
My father is Cudal Smith some of your family might know him. We have photos here of guldroy and family. I’m happy to send to you and your family. All the best. Vince Smith.

Hello Angio

Ingy was my Mother's first cousin. Her Father, Johnny Othea Boswell was her aunt Rhodie's sister.
We have a photo of Ingy and a brother who might have been called Edicar after his dad.

Lavina Boswell was my great grandad. I have a photo of him too.
He was named after his grandad, Salvaino.
Eric Trudgill has produced a pamphlet on the whole family.

Mom told us that when duckering. I.e. Fortune telling, Rhoda would ask that the client bring in a white shirt for luck.
It was because Uncle Edicar liked a white shirt.

The family also used the names boss, and Sherrif.

Hope this helps.

Vince

If you go on Eric Trudgehill's wonderful Gypsy Genealogy website and click on Merrick Lock heading, there's a wealth of information of our family.
Rodney Smith who's memorial is in Epping forest was a distant cousin of Reuben who probably introduced him to Christianity
My Dad is 84 and has a good memory. We know some of Israel Davies living relatives.
Have you seen the photos of Willem and Martha on Romany Genes ? Also picture of Guilroy, Reuben and brother Samson.

William Smith, known as Willem was the son of Guilroy and Eve.
He had one eye having lost one with a peg knife.

My great grandad Samuel was his brother. Three of the brothers married the daughters of their uncle Natty Smith. Some say that Martha was another one of the daughters of Natty and his Davies wife.

Willem was the last of the Smith brothers to stay in Leonard Stanley with Guilroy who ran a coal yard after his conversion to Christianity.

His brother Reuben was a preacher of some renown and travelled the world as an evangelist.

Hello Moet,

The story with Horton is agriculture.

The local farms were the stopping places.  Horton is a stone throw from Heathrow, itself built on farmland.

The region was known to the older generation as the " Fruit Country ".  There were also lots of peas to be picked.

The circuit of these afore- mentioned families, would follow the crops that were picked at various seasons.

Later, they would head to the West Country and Hampshire  for hops.  That's why we get members of the same families, buried so far apart.

Some family members still work for the same farming families today. :)

With agriculture being so important, it's no wonder the Stevens familly got caught up in the Swing Riots back in Chedworth.

Hello All,

Moet,

Take a look at Eric Trudgill's site if you haven't already.

He has, Tom Stevens, brother of my ancestor Eve as being married to Jane Loveridge.
Before that he had an alleged partnership with Leondra Bagley.

Other siblings, Francis, Leonard, Eliza and others.

The parents of Tom Stevens were Emmanuel Stevens and Eve Lock, daughter of Merrick Lock and Mary Lee.

As a long shot, if you go onto Romany Genes and scroll down and click on Vincent smith page ( Thanks Sue Day), there is a photo of my grt grt Grandad Guilroy Smith along with his brother Reuben and Samson.  Samson was I believe, married to Comfort Stevens' ( nee Gregory) aunt Jane Musto.

Take a look at Reuben ( seated in the middle) and compare with the photo with Singey Buckland and Reuben Smith and co.  Is it the same man??

I don't know. See what you think.  The dates and locations are right. I know this Reuben was a preacher who ran a church at Hartlebury, but we don't know who he married.

My ancestor Eve Stevens is buried in Horton and her husband Guilroy in Leonard Stanley Glos. This reflects the families work circuit.

All very interesting to me, because i know so many of the present day relatives of the Stevens, Bucklands and loveridges who live there today.
i've heard that one of the clan is writing a book, can't wait to read it :)

Hi Moet,

I have many family ties to this family. Comfort was the daughter of Alfred Gregory and Alice Musto.  Comfort's brother Alfred Jr. was my Grt Grandad.
The Stevens' seemed to all go back to Chedworth in Glos.  Go onto the Chedworth town website and there is information about the family.
My x2 Grt Grandad, was Guilroy Smith, brother of the preacher Reuben Smith.  Guilroy was married to Eve Stevens, who was in turn the daughter of Manny Stevens and Eve Lock.

I've asked older family members, and some think that your Tom and the younger Eve, were brother and sister.

This is only anecdotal, so research further. The Stevens, Locks and Smiths married into each other a lot, often first cousins, and usually several siblings from one family would marry several siblings from another family.

I am not a researcher, and owe all that I have learned to the Romany Jib team, Don Lock and Eric Trudgill.

Their respective websites can be easily google searched.

Eric trudgill and Anne ford have an excellent site " Gypsy Genealogy"

Under the heading "Merrick Lock", there is some information about the Stevens connection.  Give that a try.

Vince.

Hello all,

There is a really good article concerning Glos. Davies on Eric Trudgill's excellent Gypsy Genealogy website.

Wisdom, we are from the same clan.  My Grandad was Sidnal Smith, who was cousin twice over to your Grandad.

My father is over 80 and remembers alot about the  tribe of Natty Smith.  Thanks to Eric trudgill's piece on Merrick Lock, ( our ancestor), I know now that Annie Davies, was infact Sarah Anne Davies, and that Natty and guilroy were brothers.

Not to hijack the thread, the relevance is, that the Smiths, Davies and Locks, appear to have been so intermarried, that anyone researching these clans in Glos. would need to consider that the names can end up being interchangeable.
