Gortanima believed that the Cummings family originally were from Tircrevan. There is an excellent book Called Magilligan Presbyterian Church available online from Lulu Publications and contains records from the Parish registers since its inception in 1813. The first baptism recorded there was a Tircrevan Cummings infant.

A relative who has done more research on the Cummings family discovered that Elizabeth Taylor was from Moville.

Thats very interesting Cummings Donaghy Miskimmings!

I do know from records of Magilligan Presbyterian Church where my Cummings family of Ballycarton attended the name was spelt McCummings at first then changed to Cummings. This would have been from 1813 when the Church was established. The  Cummings family originated in Tircrevan but then a branch moved to Ballycarton. My4x Gt Grandfather was George Cumming from Paisley, Scotland married to Elizabeth Taylor from Moville, early 1800's 3 children David, James, & Mary. They settled in Ballycarton. I am descended from James Cummings who married a Catholic Sarah Jane MC Laughlin. James remained Presbyterian did not convert but wife and children were RC.

Gortinamina noted also the Baptism entry for Magilligan RC Church, 25th September 1865, Elizabeth Cummings ,daughter of Samuel Cummings and Mary Ann Coyle of Ballyhendry .  He believed that they were related to my Ballycarton Cummings.  Is this Samuel Cummings one of your ancestors?

Hi Wexflyer,
You could try the Ballyoughter and Camolin Roman Catholic Parish registers.

My ancestors were from the Ballycanew area and some of the children were baptised in Ballyoughter RC church and others in Camolin.

Hope this helps.

Hi Karen,

I have a lot of Cummings in my family tree. They were Presbyterian and originated from Paisley , Scotland.  So it is most likely than your Cummings ancestor was Presbyterian.

Thank you so much for your replies.

I did contact Limavady Catholic church  to see if Mary Cummings was on their baptismal registers but sorry to say she is not.  I will try the other churches in Limavady and surrounding areas and see if I have any luck. My Cummings ancestors were Presbyterian and attended Magilligan Presbyterian Church.  My third Great Grandfather married a catholic lady, however he remained a Presbyterian according to Magilligan Presbyterian church census of the congregation (1855) but his wife and family were RC according to that census and not named. However, I have her name and all the children ones. However, timeline wise this Mary Cummings is not from that particular branch.

The mystery goes on ......

Derry (Londonderry) / Mary Cummings Limavady Workhouse.
« on: Saturday 19 February 22 21:09 GMT (UK)  »

Hello,
It is a very long time since I posted , but I am looking for some help as to where I might find the Baptismal Register for Limavady Workhouse Chapel .

My ancestor Mary Cummings gave birth to a daughter also called Mary Cummings on 16th April 1885 in Limavady Workhouse.

The Civil Birth Certificate gives no address for Mary but does give her occupation as Domestic Servant.

Looking for further information on Mary Cummings, I contacted PRONI to see whether Mary Cummings was recorded in the Workhouse  Admissions & Discharge Registers or in the Hospital Chapel Baptismal Registers.

Unfortunately, PRONI does not have them for Limavady Workhouse.

Is there any other place that they may be located as this Mary Cummings is proving very elusive indeed and I would really love to know where she came from?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Summerhill.

Hi Sharon,
Workhouses were actually the forerunners of our County Hospital System.  Many people sought medical aid in the local workhouse as they had the services of a Doctor and nurses which is why a lot of infants were born there as they had properly trained medical staff.  Wexford County Council will have the Work house records but these tend to be in Ledger form and may or may not have been digitised.  Covid has also slowed things down as well.
