Unwanted Certificates & Artefacts / Inscribed ring
« on: Thursday 07 June 12 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but it seems appropriate.  Some time ago, I happened on an inscribed ring, and I would love to return it to the owner or owner's family. The name inscribed on the inside is Eufemia Bonilla -  could be Spanish/Portuguese possibly? Unable to tell age of ring, but it has been cut, and looks like a wedding ring possibly.  I live in Dorset, England,  and that's where the ring was found. Pleasecontact me if you can be of any help. Thanks. :)

People on the fringes of Galloway spoke 'Galloway Irish', which I presume could have been a mixture of Scots and Irish Gaelic? I've never been able to find out much about the Galooway Irish, so more research needed on my part I think. Nice link above too, thanks, have bookmarked it :)

I rescued two books from the recyling centre a while back, both belonging to Fredercik G Sedgwick, 2 Beaufort Place, Alverstoke, Gosport.

I'd be delighted to pass them on to family members who would like them. Please get in touch - one book of Common Prayer, one Holy bible.

I remember Fuscos very well, went in there after school on teh way down to Whitesands for the bus back to KPD; I went to the Academy.  The Vennel is indeed a shadow of its former self, which is sad; various pubs down there,a good bakery and a wool shop, surplus shop.  Lillte boutique in the 70s called The Hobbit too. I remember the flooding too - all teh buses shifted up or down accordingly, and The Vennel closed.

"4. Jannet/Janet "Jessie"  Dickson b. about 1849-1850 Kirkpatrick Durham.  She was visiting in the 1881 census and had a child, Mary Jane Dickson b. about 1879 England."

Have just turned up the fact my Great Great Grandmother was a Janet Dickson; needs much more research - I'm just starting out really, but will let you know of any developments! You never know.

I haven't seen the paper/study done, but am trying to get hold of one done by a Linda Cowan - is that the same one?
I've come across the name Clingan before, up there; fairly sure I went to school with some of them, possibly in Castle Douglas.
I think the pub might be shut now, but when I was there it was run by the Great Aunt/Grandmother (or similar) of David Coulthard. Lovley, unspoilt pub.  Funnily enough, I live across the road from a pub now - no surprise here! :)

Interesting.  I always thought I'd like to live there, actually, and woudl jump at the chance these days too :) When we moved to KPD in 1968 (from London), there were still houses in the village with no telephone, plumbed in toilet, etc.
Piper's Croft is in a lovely location; happy to photograph it (with owner's permission, or from a distance ) when I get back up there if you like.
