To Jorose:

Thank you for your help - am in the dark here.    I don't know my way around the Canadian system, used to the English version and sometimes old dogs don't like to learn new tricks!!

You, J.A.M. and Susano have highlighted a dark corner.

Many thanks.   BCB

Jorose:   Thank you for your information.   From what you say Thomas only survived her by five years - he died on 30 December 1934.   Any idea of her date of death, and was it Thomas that notified the authorities?

I have tried the suggested internet sites on line, but without success.

to Jorose:

Martha's maiden name was Ashley daughter of Peter & Comfort Ashley, she was married firstly to David Slater in Tipton, Staffordshire, England who died 1900 and then married Thomas Edward (or Edward Thomas) Davies on 18 May 1902 at St John's Church, Tipton.

Thank you all so much for your help - this has puzzled me and my cousins for years.    All we had were vague memories from very old ladies (all since deceased - in their 90s).    Daft as it is, I find the information exciting - it clears so many questions and allows me to fill in blanks in my very extensive family tree.

Again, my thanks.  Regards BCB

Canada / FINDING GRAVES/DEATH DETAILS
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Edward Davies (his Christian names were sometimes reversed)  sailed on the "Victorian" from Liverpool to Saint John New Brunswick  on 13 March 1906.    His wife Martha and her son Fred (surname could be Slater, but may have changed to Davies/is) aged 7 sailed on the "Empress of Ireland" from Liverpool to St John NB via Halifax on 14 December 1906.

According to the three surviving daughters of John and Sarah Blackham, "Uncle Ted" went with his second wife Martha to Canada.    At some time he had a job as the manager of an ice rink in Toronto and did well enough to buy some houses which he rented to other English people who had emigrated to Canada.   The houses were of wooden construction.

Again, according to the three ladies, his wife's son died, quickly followed by his wife.   This caused Ted to have a breakdown of some description leaving him unable to cope.   His father, Thomas Davis, paid for a member of the choir of his local church (presumably St Marks, Tipton :o) to travel to Canada to bring Ted back home, where he lived until the end of his life.

My question is: with this vague information, would it be possible to find the graves/death details of Martha and Fred?

I have complete copy of the 1881 Census courtesy of the IGI Family History Resource.    There are only 3 James Killers listed in the National Index.    The one who is married to Elizabeth is described as follows:-

James Killer (head) aged 43 born Middleton, Derby.   Occ: Carpenter, employing 2 men and 3 boys.

Elizabeth (wife) aged 42 born Wirksworth, Derby

Annie (daughter) aged 22 born Wirksworth, Derby.   Occ: Dressmaker.

Address: North End, Wirksworth, Derby.

Could your Catherine have been Annie's daughter?

The family could have moved to Ladywood with the father's work.

Staffordshire / Re: Cronehills school West Bromwich

Cronehills finally closes this month, July 2009, and will be demolished.    They do have some school records and I think these will be deposited in the local Archives held at Smethwick Library.

Old "boys and girls" were invited to a last look around the school on 4th June.   The classrooms haven't altered, neither have the cloakrooms - they still have their iron folding cage doors and chapel hat pegs.   Unfortunately in the past part of the Domestic Science block was altered - the structure still stands, but the sides are open.   The quad, used in my day for the girls to play netball, is now used as a safe play area for the children.   The boys' metal and woodworking rooms were changed into a large dining hall for the littleys.

I understand from one of the teachers that they were putting photos on their website, but I haven't found them.
