I think everyones family tree will have someone with a slightly odd name in somewhere or other. My favourites are:

Onesimus BARLOW
Coxe SWANNELL

Onesimus emigrated to Canada - but thanks to his forename he's easily spottable amongst records!

My personal favourite though is Samson Napolean PALMER. I was slightly surprised that he was given the middle name Napolean given that he was born in England only 40 years after the end of the Napoleonic wars. He married Flora Bella Jervas CHURCH - only to die at the relatively young age of 27.

Flora then married Samson's brother - the slightly less exotically named - Moses. As it was illegal (I think) to marry her husbands brother she married under the name Bella Gervas PALMER.

Just a quick bump.

I saw this, having just been looking at the prices of an upgrade on .co.uk.

As i've just moved to Oz i thought i'd have a look at the comparable price.

.co.uk were offering me £155.40 for a 12 month "everything" package (World Premium?) (extended to 13 months as i'm an existing subscriber)

.com.au offered a whopping A$449.50 for a 12 month subscription to their "everything" (World Heritage?) package.

Allowing for an exchange rate of roughly 1.6 - that would make the Oz version £280 ... which is an immense difference for what i think is access to the same info.

sadly there were no obvious matches to Thomas.

However, back then cricket wasn't the organised sport it is now. The County Championship wasn't formalised until well into the 1870's, although County clubs had been around for some 30-40 years previously playing challenge matches.

Professional cricketers, certainly before the mid-victorian time, earned their living playing in make up matches - typically where there was money at stake -  it may well be that it was in this environment that he featured.

Whilst players did play to extraordinary ages back then I think he must've been quite outstanding if he was still earning a living from the game in his sixties. It may be worth a trawl of Oxford's local leagues to see if his name appears anywhere there.

I'll have a look in a few other sources and see if the name Edgington crops up.

I have a large number of Charters from the Somersham/Colne/Bluntisham area ... most trace back to Sutton near Ely. I'll have a small rummage a bit later on ....

That'd be great.

The name i'm interested in is a John Stephen CARTER b c.1824

He got married in about 1847 so that means he was incarcerated sometime between 1847 & 1851 if that helps at all.

Hello all,

I've found an ancestor who is listed in the 1851 Census as a prisoner in Thorp Road Gaol in Peterborough.

Bit of a first this for me - anyone know any information about the place or where i might find some records (or whether they even exist).
