Dublin / Re: North Dublin Union Workhouse -
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 19:25 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfathers death certificate states that he died in the North Dublin workhouse
in 1923. Does anyone know what the criteria was for being accepted.  I'm assuming he was there
to obtain medical aid rather than being abandoned by his family.  His wife was still alive and his adult children (my grandfather).  They are all buried in Kilbarrack cemetary not a paupers grave. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Just found this post by chance.  My grandmother was born in 3 Tolka Cottages in 1890. Surname Callaghan. So they are very old. Hope this sheds some light on their age.

Can anyone explain what is the criteria for being on the electoral role in 1901 please. One grandfather is on the electoral role and one isn't.  Both are Dublin born and bred and lived in the tenements doing labouring jobs. Any info would be appreciated.

Obbie

Your post Francis Callaghan, Dub. North, vol 2, page 487 could be her as her birth date is
30.11.1891.  Also my mother was Frances and apparently she was registered as Francis and put with the males.  It took lots of visits by her father to get her birth cert. when she needed a passport.

The Bernard Callaghan you refer to could be her brother, as the dates fit.

Many thanks. Turvey.

I am going to try for my grandmother's siblings birth cert.  It was very kind of you to go to so much trouble.
