Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry Assignment to Both Sides
« on: Wednesday 24 April 24 09:55 BST (UK)  »
I have a match with 42cM across 3 segments. She has the same uncommon surname as my mother. She has been correctly identified by Ancestry as having common ancestors with me (our 2 x great grandparents). She is definitely my 3rd cousin on my mother's side. Our trees on Ancestry overlap. Our four shared matches have all been identified correctly by Ancestry as being maternal.  But Ancestry designates her as  "unassigned". How does the algorithm work that one out?

I have a similar match (DN) where our common ancestor is correctly identified by Anc but sideview technology has not assigned the match to either parent. Interestingly another match (CS) who has the same common ancestor has been correctly assigned. All three of us are on MH and the chromosome browser shows my match with CS as triangulated over three segments but only one with DN. Think that suggests the lack of assignment for DN is because the sideview technology does not consider the match sufficient to assign to a parent with sufficient confidence. It does highlight that sideview technology does not use trees in making the assignment - only DNA is used. I am guessing your situation is similar?

No not yet. I checked the original video from Ancestry, and they say the new features will be coming in the first half of 2024, so probably haven't been added yet.
Guess I will just have to be patient then. Sigh.

When was this, I think they have just added several new features to it?

I just logged into USA site this morning but cannot see any new features listed in the ProTools subscription page. Have you subscribed?

Thanks TreeDigger. Interesting IBS can occur at that level with such a high probability. I will have to keep that in mind in future. I will put researching FC's paternal line on my to-do list. It will be difficult though as her parents emigrated to Australia.

Good point, TreeDigger, about IBS. Is that feasible at 21cM longest segment?
As regards Anc booboo - yes I have checked my shared match list with the mother (AC) and no, CD does not show up.

I have looked into it further since my OP and AC's brother's daughter is also on Anc. Again a first cousin twice removed (sharing a common pair of grandparents with FC) and CD is not on my shared match list with her.

I am inclining towards the double line of descent.

So if the mother only shares 19 cM with the new match, the mother won't be in YOUR shared match list with the new match.
But that means the daughter (FC) is a higher match than her mother which seems impossible to me. The daughter being a generation lower should have a lower match than her mother.

I have a new match on Anc (CD) at 32cm x 2 segments longest 21cM. Looking at our shared matches I can see my 1st cousin twice removed (FC) who I match at 139cM x 8 segments. Her mother (1st cousin once removed) who I match at 386cm x 16 segments is not on my shared match list with CD. Is a connection between FC and CD via her paternal line the only explanation for this or are there other possibilities?

Interesting. I'll wait and see then decide. I'd pay more for a chromosome browser. I can hardly believe they have not thought of that one themselves. Mystery to me why they have not brought one out - at additional cost of course. :D

Many Thanks, AnotherDay, for the clarification. As I live in UK I now realise why I have never heard of it. I have a world-wide subscription. I will be pretty miffed if I have to shell out more for so-called ProTools.
