Many thanks Folks, for the suggestions.  You've been busy while I've been snoozing  ;)
Okay...

Pheno - good thought, but still the Matthew & Sarah Thick parents still don't seem to work with he wives and children too many others have for these parents and son Richard.

Have investigated the Richard Haworth & Catherine Robinson (mostly because of mother's name) and still open to that one.  Plus, father was a bookkeeper and my Richard was a Clerk at one point - reaching at straws.

Researching Richard born to John Hall Haworth and Elizabeth... stymied with that one.

Annie65115 - Thanks, but definitely not the the Ann Roper connection.  Yes, buried at Walton on the Hill.

Ciderdrinker..."Can I ask about a baptism to Thomas and Betsey nee Brown 9.2.1810
It 's at St Nicholas. Father a tailor of Gt Cross Hall St ..."- Yes, have been researching this connection too, but not getting far.  Good idea re signatures!

Am researching the Haworth & Betsey Brown possibility, but not having a lot of luck with connections.

MY Richard married Alethea Goodrich Wells (ch 24 Mar 1809 died 28 June 1855, dau of Alethea Hargreaves & John Wells (another brick wall is he lol)
They married on 13 May 1831 at St martin
Chn
Catherine Maria Haworth 1832-1890 (name inspired research re Catherine Robinson connection and any other Catherine)
Harriet Ameila Haworth  1834-1873 (Harriet(s) in Haworth, Wells & Hargreaves  lines)
Richard John Haworth (my 2g-grandfather) bn Cheshire (Abode Poulton Cum Seacombe Cheshire) 18 Jul 1836 - 2 bapt for him ?? 8 Aug 1836 St Peter, Liverpool & 22 Jul 1841 St Peter, Liverpool second one under HOWORTH (parents Richard & Alethea).  Died 21 Jun 1922 Western Australia.
Alethea Goodrich Haworth 1838-1877
Elizabeth Wells Haworth 1841-1908
Bridger Goodrich Haworth 1843-1881
Emma Selina Haworth 1846 - 1899
Susan Louisa Haworth 1848-1895
William James "James" Haworth 1851-1916
Jessie Maud Haworth 1855-1856

I've followed all chn and their chn as much as possible, but nothing leads me back to the parents of Richard...

He seemed to change occupations regularly according to baptisms of children!  Started out as a 'Mariner', Labourer, Warehouseman, Clerk in an Office, Gentleman, Broker, Surveyor (Tuesday 3 April 1860 - 'R Haworth, Esq., formerly of Bradshaw and Haworth surveyors, &c., late of West Derby, England.) and died as a Window Blind Manufacturer.  Fudge.

1861 census has him bn about 1804 (?) but all others and death cert about 1809-1810.  But, will look at the earlier years...in case

So grateful for all the input!

Hi Folks,
Hope I'm posting this in the right section...
I know you're an intelligent, helpful bunch - good folk have assisted in the past.  My brick wall (one of them!), despite researching on an off for over a decade, is my 4th g-grandfather, Richard Haworth, born 1808-1811, depending on which document is used as reference, died 7 June 1868, buried 10 June 1868 in Lancashire, England.  Death notices appeared in England and Australia, where his son was living (where I live), and I have the death certificate, which says 58 when he died (no parents, naturally!).

There are many others (26 trees on 'that' site, to which I've subscribed, again) who have him born 6 April, parents as Matthew Haworth and Sarah Thick.

For a while, I went with the masses, but it niggled that neither parents' names follow down through the main branch, or smaller branchlets (I've explored them all as far as I can).  Then, I came across  a transcript of a footnote, attached to the baptism of Richard, son of Matthew and Sarah.  This is where I need help, please.

"Footnote: 'I certify that Richard HOWARTH appeared before me and declared that he was born 6.00am Apr 6 1811 and produced a Family Bible with an ancient entry to that effecr' (sic) dated 3 Aug 1868."

Ignoring the name spelling (interchangeable even within families, depending on who did the recording, am I right in assuming the entry was made on the day of said Richard's visit?  Or am I wrong?

I'll be immensely grateful for others' take on this.

Clackmannanshire / Re: McEwan- Anderson - Black Help
« on: Monday 07 January 13 22:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi grimnar,

This  is an old post, but hope you're still keeping an eye on it.  I have some more info on this family, though not a lot on my direct ancestor, which is frustrating.
David      1822, Alloa married 2 Jan 1841 to Elizabeth Anderson

John        1826, Alloa no more info
Margaret 1829, Alloa no more info

Isabella   1831, Alloa, died 18 Jun 1914 (Isabella, a widow, died at age 83, at 11:40 p.m. at 106 Mill Street, Selkirk) of intestinal obstruction
Married 2 Nov 1850, Tillcoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland to Alexander Stewart (b abt 1830 Brechin, Angus died before 1901)
They had (at least) 2 children:
Alexander Stewart b abt 1851Tillicoultry, Clackmannan, Scotland
David Stewart b abt 1854 Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland

1851 sees Alexander, Isabella - both woollen weavers - Alex jnr, along with mother-in-law Margaret Anderson (aged 57), and a 2 yo William Anderson living at Stirling Street, Tillicoultry

1861 sees the family back in Brechen, Alexander's birthplace.  Margaret not with them.

1871 has Isabella and Alexander living at 15 Park Street, Tillicoultry
Alexander 41, Maunfacturer, employing 4 men and 2 boys
Alexander, son, unmarried, 20, Occupation "W....oster"
David, son, 17, Draper
Margaret McEwan, mother, widow, 79

In 1901, Isabella, widow, aged 69, was a Lodging House Keeper at Connel, (Kilmore&Kilbride??).  Living with her is her granddaughter, Mary A. Stewart, single, 19, Domestic Servant, b. Argykshire Tay....???  Was she the daughter of Alexander Jnr or David??

Then,
Ann          1833, Alloa. Emigrated to Australia - I have quite a bit of info on her and husband William Malcolm, and their descendants (12 Children)

My connection is that my g-g grandmother, Margaret Anderson, came to Geelong (Point Henry), Victoria on the ship "Childe Harold" in 1853, along with William and Ann MALCOLM, her aunt and uncle.  Supposedly, Margaret was the daughter of Jane/Jean Black, sister of Ann, and a James Anderson.  So far, I've found no proof of Jane/Jean's connection to the family and nothing confirmed on James Anderson.  This is my brick wall!

If you've discovered more on this line since your post, or would like what info I have on the Aussie connection, I hope we make some holes in our respective walls.

Hi Monica,

Just goes to show my maths sucks in the early hours... ;D

So what have I got?

Margaret McEwan aged 45 in 1841 census, so b. abt 1794, married to John McEwan age 50 so b. abt 1791 who was a sawer (a worker in a timber pit or saw mill).

Margaret's death cert has her aged 79, in 1871, which would make her born abt 1792 - not far out.
Widow of John Black, a 'carter' (maybe for the saw mill, or change of job?).
Mother Marion Anderson
Father William McEwan
Informant for Margaret's death was James MURRAY - son-in-law!

Poss Christening & Birth for Margaret McEwan:
23 Nov 1794   CLACKMANNAN,CLACKMANNAN,SCOTLAND
Birth Date 18 Nov 1794
Father's Name    Michael Ewan
Mother's Name Mary Drummond

Which does NOT tie in with parents on the death cert in 1871...!  SO maybe I have the wrong Marg McEwan married to a John Black.  Though another rellie on their trail has her parents as Marion Anderson and William McEwan.

So far no marriage for them, though there is one: Irvine Marriage - 20 Jan 1818 John Black & Margaret McGavin ??? Doesn't really 'sound' right.

Children of Margaret & John so far found:
Jane/Jean abt 1820 married James Anderson 1838 Alloa, Clackmannanshire

David abt 1822 at Alloa Clackmannanshire (unconfirmed)

John abt 1826 at Alloa Clackmannanshire (unconfirmed)

Margaret abt 1829 at Alloa Clackmannanshire (unconfirmed)

Isabella abt 1831 at Alloa Clackmannanshire (unconfirmed) Married 2 Nov 1850 at Tillicoultry to Alexander Stewart b abt 1830 at Brechin, and their son Alexander b abt 1851 at Tillicoultry

Ann 4 Jul 1832 at Alloa Clackmannanshire (established) married 11 Dec 1847 at Bothkennar, Stirlingshire to William Malcolm b abt 1826 at Larbert, Stirlingshire, who came to Australia.  They had 12 children according to Ann's death cert, though there's only info on 10 of them - Margaret, Ann, Isabella, John, Ellen/Helen, Alexander, Elizabeth, Charles, Janet, Mearn, William and Ann.

Wondering if perhaps Margaret McEwan jnr married James Murray, if I have the right death.  There were McEwans, Andersons & Blacks in the 1851 Larbet census, and one Murray (not James).  There are also Black+Murray and Malcolm+Murray family connections.

Or did James Anderson die and Jane/Jean remarry to James Murray?  Or was there another daughter, yet to be found?

The hunt continues.

Okay, I've lost the plot.

The two deaths for Marion and William McEwan can't be parents of Margaret Black McEwan.  They're too young.  I realise folk often married young, but that's ridiculous.

Maybe they are William Jnr and his wife...?  If there was a Wm Jnr.

The Scotland's People folk were marvellous.  I had a legible image within 24 hours!

A bit more info, but still hitting a brick wall with James Anderson and Jane/Jean Black.

What I've found...

Jane/Jean's mother Margaret Black (McEwan) was a widow by 1851 (census) when she lived with dau Isabella (Black) & Alexander Stewart.  She died in 1871 at Alloa, Clackmannanshire.

By 1861 Isabella and Alexander were living back at Alexander's home town, Brechin

Not sure when father John Black died, as I got 74 hits on Scotland's People, and none that seemed 'obvious'.  Not a one in Clackmannanshire.

Margaret Black (McEwan) was the daughter of Marion McEwan (Anderson!) I think d. in 1866 in Alloa, Clackmannan (of 'Old Age' at 79), and husband William McEwan I think  d. 1861 in Clackmannan, age 61, mother's maiden name McLaren.  Will need to get more credits and the certs next payday.

There's also a death for Margaret Black age 47 in 1866 at Alloa... no idea if she's related.

I cannot find deaths for either Jean/Jane Anderson (Black) or her husband James.  It's like aliens took them.  I'm communicating with another (distant) family member and she's had no luck either.  :(  She also has their marriage as 1838 at Alloa, Clackmannanshire, so we agree that's them.

Poor old Jean/Jane doesn't seem to exist in the 'Black' family, yet everything else fits.

Hi Monica,

You're right, nothing helps, so will contact them.  Thank you for the advice.  Needless to say the Stewarts seem to be in the middle of the page where there are only a few grey spots.  Just as well I have a sense of humour - one needs it on this journey.
