Hi Telinlethaed
Thanks for the post, I have seen those 1851 census records, I believe "my" Mary Ann Chapple is the first one listed.  In a newspaper article when she was 96 she talks about her father William (in fact Richard who died of phthisis in Wales in 1841) and her mother Elizabeth.  On her marriage certificate she lists Richard Chapple, Miner, as her father.  Mary Ann is not on the 1841 census, but the rest of the family is, Richard died on 29 September 1841.

There were lots of Chapples around, I don't think Mary Ann was the natural daughter of Richard and Elizabeth, and I have never found a birth certificate that fits. I think possibly Mary Ann was either fathered by A.N. Other on Elizabeth, or she was an adopted/fostered relative perhaps?

This family is my brick wall!

Hi Seraphic
We are distantly related, as Mary Ann Chapple c 1842 and William Paull c1849 of Redruth Cornwall are my GG Grandparents.  I am at a brick wall in trying to work out both of their births, and also that of Francis Paull c1864, purported first son and my G Grandfather - but I have never found his birth details either. I believe there was a deal of untruths about their ages etc - Mary Ann was older than William I think - but by how much? Sources I have for their marriage cert 1868, Census, emigration/immigration to NZ and hence to Victoria in 1872, children's birth certs, and their deaths and burials all give different ages!  Wondering if you ever had any luck with your ancestor, and if you uncovered any gems song the way?  Happy to share what I have.
Kind regards, Christine, WA. :)

Hi
I found this thread whilst searching for information on my husband's grandfather, who was in the KOSBs and lived in Hawick, altho came originally from Edinburgh.  I wonder if you could have a look for any information on him - he may not be in your book.  Bit tricky though, as his birth name was GARDEN but like a lot of young men changed his name to sign up whilst underge, so may also be under SMITH ..

James GARDEN aka SMITH, born 1882, Edinburgh, KOSBs, wounded and returned home about 1916, married a Hawick girl Jeanie RODDAN and lived in Hawick from then on.  KOSB number is 9837

I would appreciate any information you can provide, and thank you
