The Common Room / Re: Now I know why I love doing family trees

What wonderful news, they must have so much to catch up on.
I had something similiar happen to me a few months ago, I knew nothing about my mums father, (my grandfather) as he and his wife separated when my mum was a small child, he lived up around Townsville, Queensland. and my grandmother in Victoria.
This would have been around 1918-20, anyway we did not know when he died, or how or even where he was buried.
I was given some info from another group about my grandfather sponsoring his then fiancee to come to Australia.
Anyway to cut a long story short, while searching thru archives, I thought why not see if there is any inquest into his death, looked thru one of the records books and there was a ref no, so about 20 mins after first starting the search I had the actual records in front of me.
Now I know what happened to him (he was drunk, fell asleep and rolled of the side of the boat, he could not swim, it is also believed he may have hit his head in the process of falling off the boat)
I know where he lived at the time of his death and where he is buried,
So if it was not sites like this, I possibly would still be going round and round searching for him.
so ladies and gents thank you for your willingness to do the look ups for others.

The Lighter Side / Re: discoveries about ancestors relevant to your life
« on: Monday 12 October 09 01:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi  While researching on my mothers side, I found out that my grandmother was a dressmaker, my mother also was a dressmaker, and I also enjoy making clothes, (when I get the chance) plus have found I have a love for designing on cards and scrapbooking as well. All 3 of my children and also my grandchildren love making papercrafts as well or other designing.   My sister loves to paint, so I believe genes do carry on, it all depends on whether they follow that line or ignore it.

Australia / Re: Robert & Mary TAYLOR nee BALSOM

Hi again, forgot to add, that on his son Albert's marriage certificate, his father Robert is listed as a surgeon and on his death certificate (Albert) his father is a doctor.
Have found info for surgeons and doctors who qualified in ENgland and have found a couple of Roberts, but am not too sure if it is him.
Also there is the possibility he came out unassisted as have not found any records on assisted immigration listings.  Unless he was a ships surgeon, and have not been able to find him on any ships so far.
thanks again for any help.

Hi re Robert and Mary, they did not come out on the Andromache, this is not them.
Mary's maiden name was on her son's death Certificate is Balsom.
I also have a Dr Taylor leaving Adelaide in 1839 heading back to Port Jackson, in the colony of Sydney.
Have seen in the new south wales government gazette a will and codacil for a Robert Taylor in 1850.
Also have seen a death notice in Dec 1899 at Coogee and Mary Taylor Nov 1899 at Waterloo, these were listed in new south wales archive records.
In the 1841 census there are 2 Robert Taylor living in Sydney area, this information still needs looking up at LDS.
Have also looked up Sands directory but by then there are a few Taylor's living in the colony of Sydney.
I am thanking those that have done research so far, I also believe that they may have come out on the Dorset from England, but at this stafe cannot prove it.
thanks again for any help.

Australia / Robert & Mary TAYLOR nee BALSOM
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 12:21 BST (UK)  »
:-* Hi I was wondering if there is anyone else on here that are looking for information on Robert and Mary Taylor nee Balsom who came out to Port Jackson, New South Wales around 1839, I have some information on their son Albert and his family, but have no prev information on Robert and Mary before they arrived here.
At this stage am unsure of when Robert or Mary were born, or where they lived. If anyone can help would be most appreciated.
I have been given some info on their possible married in Feb 1837 in Damerel, Devon but am unsure if this is them.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks
