The Winnipeg Tribune………….and the Faces of World War One

https://www.facebook.com/groups/698658293632613/

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War 1, Operation: Picture Me is pleased to share a year long research project highlighting the contribution of over 5,000 Winnipegers/ Manitobans who went to war, including almost 1000 who failed to return home.

The Tribune newspaper clippings showcase Canadians at their best and sometimes at their worst. A major portion of the clippings are about the men, women and sometimes the children of Winnipeg who helped in the war effort.

We are humbled by the dedication of the Tribune staff who chronicled the personal stories of Winnipeg at War.

On October 19th 2016, over 5000 clippings have been uploaded to Facebook, under the group name Operation Picture Me. The clippings have been put in albums corresponding to the month and year of publication (except 1914).  To help find a family member, an index has been created.

We hope the students of Winnipeg will use this resource to learn about the former students listed on their school’s Roll of Honour.

World War Two / 48th Highlanders of Canada Journey to World War II 1939 - 1940
« on: Sunday 22 August 10 16:37 BST (UK)  »
In honour of the men who served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada during World War 2 we present their photographic journey from Toronto to England in the fall of 1939 and the spring of 1940. Their heroic contribution in France (1940), Sicily and Italy (1943-44) and finally the liberation of Apeldoorn in 1945 will live on in our memories and in the displays at the 48th Highlanders Regimental Museum at 73 Simcoe St Toronto, Ontario.

We remain to them, Dileas Gu Brath, (Faithful Forever).

Here is a link to a YouTube video titled

"48th Highlanders of Canada Remembrance Day Parade."

The video is dedicated to William F Thow who died on May 18th 1940 and was the first 48th Highlander killed in WWII. There is no known picture of William Thow.

There were over 1400 who were killed in WWI and we remember all our fallen heroes.

Thanks for suppling the photo. It is a great addition to the museum

Hi David,

It was nice to talk to Tommy  :)   Once I have Herbert's full military file, I would be more than happy to send a copy of that as well for your files.

I have letters from Herbert during his time in the war and will send copies as well.

Tommy had mentioned that Herbert rec'd a bravery medal, can I assume that the information regarding that will be in his file?

Thanks,
Karen

HI Karen

Thanks for calling the museum. It will be great to get a picture of your relative to add to  the 48th Highlanders archives. Any other information you can send would also be important.

As a side project I personally have been looking for pictures of all Canadians that have been KIA. When I find a picture I add it to the Canadian Virtual War Memorial. In the past few years I have sent in over 3000 pictures including several VC winners and also pictures of the children of the National Silver Cross Mothers.

David
