I have just received an update from a very kind fellow at the North Shields Library.
He states William owned  a boat , mentioned in the Dictionary of Sailing Ships and his widow owned several after his death. Based now (1790) in South Shields
He mentions several John Davison's working on boats out of North Shields.
All very interesting.
What wonderful people  you have working on Tyneside.

Thank you c-side for the recommendation re North Shields library (now called. North Shields Customer First Centre)
i had a very prompt  reply from them stating they hold records of Master mariners and shipping  from 1786. From  Newcastle Custom House, Shields Custom House ( 1848 ) and Sunderland Custom House Records.
Also a Dictionary of Tyne Sailing Ships. Useful for tracing  local ships, captains,  masters and owners.
Maybe this will be useful to others.
Thank you both for your interest. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thank you for your interest  Radcliff
The surname  is   ORNSBY  a very unusual one.
I think you are correct in your assumption. I have now found an Eleanor born to JOHN DAVISON
Baptised    18th April 1779
The only other ORNSBY is a  WILLIAM listed as a MASTER MARINER, probably her brother.
Maybe I can find out about Mariners through him.
If he studied for a ticket, as they call it, then maybe there are records somewhere.
Anyone any ideas?

Northumberland / John Davison-Monkseaton Mariner 1780's

Where can I find any information regarding   JOHN DAVISON Monkseaton Mariner listed as such on his dau baptism  ANN  1783 Christ Church Tynemouth and his son's death record  JOHN died 1771

I know records are kept in local Records Offices from the mid 1800's. In the programme--WDYTYA
With Cheryl featuring  ( -admittedly ) a MASTER MARINER they went to a building overlooking North Shields, to look into this fact. Was it just for the view or are records held there?
I would expect he sailed out of North Shields as I doubt there would be anything relevant at Monkseaton.
I cannot find a marriage for him in the Bishop's Transcripts, I am having difficulty reading them.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Andrew,
I wonder if you have time to look and see if there is a marriage  in Belford after 1773 between an
Elizabeth Morton and an Edward Murdy.
Sometime ago you found what I think is her birth --- dau of William Morton and a Jane Sanderson  of Berwick upon Tweed.   William of Belford ----Elizabeth born around 1758/9  or even recorded as Eliza.
Thanking you,
Big Ooms

I am doing a one name study of Mortons/Murtons in Northumberland and the southern bank of the Tyne from South Shields to Ryton.

I have more than 3,800 parish register entries going up to 1841 and in addition I have wills, admons, Marriage Bonds, Legal cases, Militia lists, Hearth tax, newspaper entries, etc. and all the entries in the 1841 and 1851 censuses including strays.

I'm happy to look anything up for you if you have a query.
