Thanks again so much Cas! This man has been a complete mystery to me. He fathered my maternal grandmother, but never married her mother. The only reason I know his name is from my grandmother’s marriage certificate, which states: Father: William Elliott, Postman. I could find no record of him on census returns of 1861, 1871, 1881 or 1891. I then discovered, from Post Office records, that he joined the postal service in January 1881. Then I discovered a newspaper article about a court case involving a drunken postman. The article, from October 1882, stated that William Elliott, postman had been drunk on duty and had misplaced his pouch of letters. He pleaded guilty and was given a mild sentence because he had served 21 years in the army. I am now trying to find more information about his military record. His military service accounts for why I could not find him in 1861 or 1871. Next I found another newspaper article which was about an inquest on the death of William Elliott aged 47 in 1887. This mentioned that he had a brother John, and that he was an army pensioner. I now knew that he’d been born in 1840. Although this doesn’t give me absolute certainty that I’ve got the right one, there are a lot of details that seem to indicate that it’s possible. It’s certainly the closest I’ve got to finding him. Now I need to find why he’s alluded me on the 1881 census!

Can anyone help me with military records of William Elliott, born 1840 in Coventry? He served 21 years in the army starting in 1859 or 1860…..ending therefore in late 1880 or beginning of 1881. [He became a rural letter carrier in January 1881] I have no definite idea about regiment or service number, but I do know, from court proceedings in 1882, that he had a good service record and 21 years of service.

Hello Sue

I too am descended from Frederick Joseph Blackford via his youngest son, Job. Frederick Joseph did indeed marry Elizabeth Millward in Birmingham in 1833 (I have proof of this). It is also possible, though not yet conclusively proved, that he was arrested for bastardy in Ipsley in 1832. I have still not been able to go beyond Frederick Joseph Blackford.....I have found no trace of him in Hammersmith. There was, however, a joint baptism of a Frederick and a William Blackford in 1807 in Shoreditch that COULD be a lead.

My great grandparents were William Blackford and Sarah Ann (nee Wilkinson).

I have birth / marriage / death details for them but would like to find out more about their parents, grandparents.

Williams father was Frederick Joseph Blackford - think he may have been born in Hammersmith in 1803.  Possibly married an Elizabeth (nee Millward) but not confirmed in 1833?  No details about his or her death.

Sarah's father was called Joseph or John Wilkinson - possibly born about 1801.
May have married a Hannah (Bayliss / Bayless) - when I don't know.  No details of marriage or deaths.

Any help with information on them and their families would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Sue Garside
