Thanks for those hints, Rosie.

Alexander Campbell, who married Helen Fraser, has Alexander Campbell and Jane Campbell as his parents.

The Alexander Campbell living as a lodger with the Thomsons in the 1861 Census could be my Alexander, since Peter Campbell McLeod married Janet Orr, the daughter of Helen Thomson, previously Orr, mn Mann.

Now the marriage of William Nelson to Helen Campbell in 1841 is interesting and I will be following this up. The OPR only shows the names.

The witnesses to Peter;s marriage are both named Johnston.

The marriages for Alexander and Norman up to 1885 in Renfrewshire all show different parents.

Hi Colin

Alexander and Norman are shown in the 1841 census with Peter and their mother.

Hi Carole

My mistake, Peter was born 15th May 1839 and baptized 26th May 1839.

There are 142 results for Hel*en M*cle*d in the 1851 Census, none of which stand out, ie in Renfrew or surrounding counties.

The only marriage on SP between an Al* M*cle*d and Hel*en Campbell is in Perth in 1762.

And no obvious marriage between a Hel*en Campbell/M*l*d to a Campbell.

There is an Alexander M*cle*d living in Greenock in the 1851 Census. He is the correct age and is Head of the House, living with his Uncle William, and both working as grocers. But I don’t know if he is mine.

There are no deaths for a Norman or Al* M*l*d mmn Campbell.

Peter Cambell M*leod is recorded as Peter Campbell in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses. but his children were registered as McLeod.

Renfrewshire / Alexander Macleod and Helen Campbell

Hi
I am looking into the parents of Peter Campbell Macleod, born 15th June, 1839 to Alexander Macleod, seaman, and Helen Campbell in Greenock New or Middle, Renfrewshire.

Peter had two brothers, Alexander born 1833, and Norman born 1838, both born in Renfrewshire.

In the 1841 Census, Helen is living in Broad Close, Greenock Middle, with her three sons. She is shown as being born outwith  the county and running a lodginghouse. Also residing there is Helen Campbell, aged 60, born outwith the county, whom I assume is Helen’s mother.

When Peter married Janot Orr in 1866, his parents are shown as Alexander McLeod, seaman, deceased, and Helen Campbell.

Peter dies in 1916, and his parents are shown as Alexander McLeod, seaman, deceased, and Helen Campbell, subsequently Campbell, deceased.

I can’t see any further obvious Census records for Helen, nor a marriage to anyone called Campbell between 1866 and 1916.

Any further information on Alexander Macleod and Helen Campbell, and their sons Alexander and Norman, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the information.

I have that marriage. John Anderson is a printer, with no indication of any connection.

I will have a close look at the Jamaican links, especially the baptism of a James Anderson mother Margaret Marshall.

Exaggeration had crossed my mind as well, but another reason for marrying Andrew Bower could be due to the fact that she gave birth to a daughter four months before the marriage. I don't know when she returned, so maybe sent back in disgrace.

Again, thanks for the posts

Fife / John Anderson
« on: Wednesday 03 August 22 18:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for information on the parents of Janet Anderson, born approx. 1837 in Jamaica.

She married Andrew Bower 30/07/1858 at Blairs Farm, Dunipace, Stirlingshire. Her parents are listed as John Anderson, Landed Proprietor in Jamaica, and Margaret Marshall.

Janet died 02/09/1911 in Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, and her father is listed as John Anderson, Tea Planter, Deceased.

On her Marriage Registration, the witnesses are Peter Anderson and Peter Anderson, both of Blairs Farm. In the 1851 Census, Peter Anderson is the Farmer of Blairs Farm, and there is no sign of Janet. A search shows that Peter was born to Robert Anderson and Margaret Graham in Beath, Fife.

Now Robert and Margaret had a son John, born in Beath in 1807, and I was wondering whether he is the father of Janet and that she was sent back to live with her uncle.

Any information appreciated.
