The Common Room / Florence Bruce -Mezzo Soprano
« on: Tuesday 09 June 20 12:42 BST (UK)  »
I follow some classic 78 recordings on the "OldiesAl" channel on youtube.  The latest is a treasure that has defied any research. Looking for any information on Florence Bruce, Mezzo-Soprano. She is singing Loch Lomond "https://youtu.be/bOo1UmOCo3g" from a 1911 recording.
Sometimes you have to broader a search, hence asking here. Any help appreciated.

Thanks...

The Common Room / Help finding Gr Grandfathers MN Records.
« on: Sunday 09 June 19 09:18 BST (UK)  »
I may be flogging a dead horse but here goes.

My Gt Grandfather was born in Sweden about 1845 and was in the British Merchant Navy on the ship “Bradford” registered in Grimsby. What I am looking for is the possibility that there would be Swedish papers lodged somewhere that would give his vital details. My aim is to try to find a link to my Swedish line. The only thing family members are aware is he came from Sweden and it does not look as if he made contact. Here are the details I have. It would seem he has Anglicanized his name.

Andrew George Johnson b. Abt 1845 Göteborg, Västra Götaland, Sweden
M. 4 Sep 1871 St Mary’s, Hull, Yorkshire, England to Margaret Linguard b.abt. 1850 North Thoresby, Lincolnshire
Occupation 1871, Sailor, 1881 Boatswain No other census.
Died 1921 Waltham, Lincolnshire

Any help appreciated in locating his merchant navy records.

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / RootsMagic 7 under Linux
« on: Wednesday 09 March 16 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to know if there is anyone on Rootschat running RootsMagic 7 under Linux (Debian variants). I have installed it under Crossover and it does seem to be running OK. Crossover is on a free 2 week trial and RootsMagic 7 is essentials, so before I lay any money out I would like to know anyone else's experience and any problems I might run into. I come from FTM but dropped that and a lot more when Win 10 emerged. I do like some of the features of RootsMagic seems very nice.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Albert Edward Newman 1902
« on: Wednesday 11 November 15 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Albert Edward Newman b. 01 Sep 1902 Lanport Hampshire. He was the youngest of 5 siblings. 3 of the children went to Canada and contact lost as they were separated. The oldest Beatrice came to Leicestershire married and raised a family. Since tracking down the family, no one knows what has happened to Albert.

The last record I have is the 1911 census where he was living with his mother Betsie and a James Urry, 17 York Place Portsea, Hampshire. I have looked at the 1939 Register and found Betsie but Albert not there. I can't find an early death, (some talk in the family that he was ill but seems more likely a sibling.) There are 2 possible marriages of Albert E Newman in Portsmouth in 1931 and 1938.

Would any Rootchatters have access to some records that I don't have. Otherwise I will have to send for Marriage Certificates one by one and if he moved away from Portsmouth this is going to be a lot harder and more expensive.

Thanks
Robert..
