« on: Tuesday 30 June 20 11:17 BST (UK)  »
Is this too vague? Would like to trace service record of my uncle, served in RAF in WW2, Born1921 in the Uckfield area. Only memory of him was a photo of him, sitting at a piano, wearing RAF uniform with sergeants stripes. Died about ten years ago. Anyone help, please? Thanks

Some years ago I was trying to locate students at this school, which I attended from about 1949 to 1955, who remembered a teacher Ken Myers. A number of people replied, bringing back many happy memories of the school, but no-one mentioned Myers. I must admit that I did not respond to all of the replies, to my shame, and only came upon them today when reading my history!! Any one still out there who might remember the school or Ken Myers?  Thanks

I wonder if any one is currently researching the RFA? I am looking for details in particular about the tradesmen - Saddlers, Blacksmiths, Wheelwrights etc. I have tried unsuccessfully so far to find photos of these activities: The period I am interested in is May1916 to July1917, specifically with C Battery, 168 brigade. Having tried photographs, I wonder whether the war artists would have produced paintings, sketches in these areas. If so, how do I research these? any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

The Lighter Side / strange expletives passed down
« on: Tuesday 05 February 13 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
Have you any strange sayings/expletives passed down Through your family? I give, for example the following ( which no one I asked had ever heard). They could originate from Sussex:
'Stap Me!!' (suprise) example: Stap me, boy, you've grown! when addressing growing grandson
'Blind old Kate!' (more of a suprise) You spent how much???!! when asking daughter about new dress
'Old-Fashioned-word-meaning-earth' (used by church goer to express himself when hitting finger with hammer etc.)
....and terms of endearment? my father only ever called me 'Boy'- but then his father-in-law called him that.

Lancashire / Olton Football Club
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
clearing out the old village hall in Devon, we found a pewter mug engraved as follows: Olton football club. to Philip a Stanton on the occasion of his marriage, March11th 1950 With all good wishes from his colleagues in the first team. If anyone recognises this, let me know and you can have it back! Devon is a long way from Olton, so I guess the newly married Philip must have moved down here sometime :) :)

The Lighter Side / schoolwear
« on: Monday 03 December 12 08:27 GMT (UK)  »
My grandson, 16, preparing to go to school on a cold day, dressed in numerous layers of warm, waterproof, clothing, reminded me that when I went to school in the 50's we were not allowed to wear long trousers until we were in the third year, ie 13 years old. I remember several occasions of tramping through the snow in wellingtons and short trousers, getting chapped where the boots rubbed my shins! Was this a general thing about trousers or was it just my school headmaster being cruel?? If so, I could claim compensation!! I also remember the agony of having to wear my sisters outgrown raincoat-the buttons were on the wrong side, and her name was still in it- oh! the humiliation!! ( the boots and short trousers mentioned above, also acted as a sort of airbrake when sliding headfirst down a hill on a tea tray- the boots scooped up the snow and slowed you down). Happy days!
