England / Smith Devon,London & Kent.
« on: Tuesday 19 May 15 01:01 BST (UK)  »
I have brought up this problem of mine before but rather than go though it to arrive back here I will start afresh armed with the new info as little as that is. I am looking to find more info ( census, marriage, death, etc) on Frederick Thomas Smith b 25 Aug 18 East Stonehouse Devon.  Residence 17 June 1889 London (ref school admission) 1891 Census 26 College St Southwark London. Parents Thomas Henry Smith mother Amelia Hexter. Amelia, later after divorce/death/separation from Henry changed her surname to Smythe around 1900 and so did two of her other children so it maybe that Frederick also changed to Smythe. My problem? I can't find him after the 1891 census. Any ideas?
I am also looking for his younger brother Charles William Smith but I will save that for another time.

London and Middlesex / Death of Thomas Henry Smith.
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 23:47 GMT (UK)  »
Simply help!!!!!    Do I have the same Thomas Henry Smith? Charles William Smith was born 14 Jun 1891 in the Reg Dist of Saint Olave Southwark. His father is listed as Thomas Henry Smith a Preserved Meat Warehouseman of 17 College St Horsleydown.  All of which is correct.

I have not been able to find a death record for Thomas Henry Smith born 1860 East Stonehouse Devon. Other than that of a Thomas Henry Smith died 10 Dec 1891. Accidental Death consequence of burns. Reg Dist of Saint Olave Southwark. Inquest held 11 Dec 1891 by Deputy Coroner for Southwark. His address at the time was 71 Stanworth (?) St Bermondsey. He was noted as an labourer.

If he is one in the same then he is not the father of my grandmother Lilian Mildred Smith/Smythe.

At the time I believe in Bermondsey there was  a cold meat storage facility owned by Johnson,Cole,Brier & Cordsey Ltd. It is possible he worked there. Was there a fire there ??

The address is different but the family moved at least 5 times that I know of in the space of three years.

I have contacted the Southwark Coroner and they are unable to help.

Is there anyway I can tie the two together?

World War One / Sydney Daniels.A soldier or not?
« on: Sunday 27 January 13 23:30 GMT (UK)  »
Sydney George Thomas Daniels (1895 Fenny Stratford) on his marriage certificate (1917) states 'Soldier, grocer in civil life.'
On his sons (my fathers) birth certificate it states, 'Grocers Assistant ( ex Lance Corporal Manchester Regiment)'
His obituary (died 1932)' states in part 'being held prisoner of war for 10 months in (on a farm near) the village of Hunzel,Germany' ' was fond of re-calling the avowal of his captor' 'some four years ago (1928?) paid a visit to Germany on the invitation of his captor (farmer?),when he was entertained by his captor' 'In addition to his good work on the committee of the ex-Service Men's Club, the local branch of the British Legion' (Buntingford).
A contingent of 40 members of the British Legion led by Capt H. H. Williams led the procession from the house to the church'
I have a photo of him with his brother in law, both in uniform (undated)

Now to my problem. His war sevice record states that he joined 11 Jan 1915 and discharged as unfiited to the duties of the corps 23 Jan 1915. It is the only service record I can find through Ancestry.

A soldier or not?

London and Middlesex / Ongar Rd Fulham rescue house
« on: Saturday 26 January 13 21:55 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmother Lilian Smythe is my brick wall. I can only find her marriage certificate and on it a witness is Emily Goffe. I believe that it is the same Emily Goffe that established and ran a rescue home for women at 63 Ongar Rd Fulham ( ref 1911 census) Lilian noted her address as 63 Ongar Rd on her marriage cetificate (1917). Would records be available of such an establishment?

Hertfordshire / Layston Church-Buntingford
« on: Saturday 24 April 10 05:43 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone advise me if there are there any MI's available for the cemetery at Layston Church,Buntingford? My grandfather Sydney George Thomas Daniels, who I never met, was buried there in 1932. I have good information that a headstone marked his grave and would like to gather info from it and at some time obtain a photo.

Also,he was managing the shop of W.B. Moss & Sons in Buntingford at the time of his death.Any info on that company would also be helpfull as I can't find a listing of them and apparently they had a few shops around Hertforshire.

Hertfordshire / Thomas Conder from Ashwell?
« on: Monday 12 April 10 01:32 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Conder married Mary Baldock 1756 in Ashwell. He died in 1812, also in Ashwell as per PR's As far a I can find out they had 7 children the last being Ann in 1772. My problem is his parents. Many others have his parents as Thomas Conder 1684-1763 & Elizabeth Jeepe 1678-1740.(Orwell,Cam) They had Thomas as being born in 1712 as per Orwell PR's. This would have made him as being around 60 when his daughter Ann was born and him dying aged 100. I just can't get my head around this. Also, I cannot find anything on Mary Baldock which may lead me to a more realistic year of birth to Thomas. Can someone point me in the right direction? Were Thomas and Elizabeth his parents? I am stuck and can't get past this.
