Completed Census Requests / 1881 census request - by address
« on: Monday 23 February 04 13:13 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have a way of checking the 1881 census by address, rather than name?

I am looking for residents of Queen Street West, Stockport Cheshire in 1881.  Incomplete addresses were given on a marriage certificate later that year.

Alternatively if someone knows a name in that street, I can look backwards and forwards from that point.

Thanks.

Completed Census Requests / Re:Leeds Poll Book 1868 - Look up Offer

Fitty,

You had a look at STONES in Leeds for me earlier.  Please can you have a look at  Gordon Street, Holbeck  to see if the Stones are there?  I reckon this lot from the 1881 census fit the bill.  Walter is within age range for beng age 20 at marriage in 1887.  William is a tool smith (mechanic)

William David STONES, age about 20, mechanic/tool turner/iron smith
born New Wortley

Wife Esther STONES, age about 20
born Holbeck

Thanks.

Cheshire / PICKSTON / FLANAGAN - Stockport
« on: Wednesday 18 February 04 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
Here is a conundrum that has been puzzling a lot of people.

Mary Ellen PICKSTON (born in Salford c. 1855 - 1859?) married James FLANAGAN (born in Stockport c. 1850?) on Sunday 29 May 1881 in Stockport, Cheshire.

They had 8 children.

James was a basket / skip maker and they lived in

Queen Street West, Stockport,
39 Melville Street, Harpurhey,
12 Williams Place, Harpurhey

We cannot find evidence of birth or parentage for these two.

Mary's father may have been Joseph PICKSTON
James' father may have been John FLANAGAN

There were several Mary Ellen PICKSTONs in the vicinity at that time, none have proved to be she.

James' antecedents are proving equally problematic.

1881 is the earliest solid evidence we have about them, but being apparently illiterate their ages on certificates and censuses are all over the place.

I shall post this on the Lancashire section too as they moved there early in their married life.

Herefordshire / TAYLOR family - Cricketers Arms, Broad Heath, Presteigne.
« on: Wednesday 18 February 04 13:37 GMT (UK)  »
John TAYLOR (born c. 1823 in Rmwych Colva,Radnor) was publican of the Cricketers Arms, Broad Heath, Presteigne in the 19th century.

He married Margaret (born c. 1827 in Cwm Clyro, Radnor).

They had children Harriet, Edwin (who took over the pub after mother and father) and Sarah Ann.

Barring the 1881 census I cannot find any more on John and Margaret.  Does anyone have them in their tree, or know Margaret's maiden name?

This is posted under Radnorshire too, as Presteigne seems to be in either county at various times.

Looking for information on William David STONES (born c.1840 in Leeds).  He was a mechanic.

Did he marry Esther WESTERMANN or Ann JOHNSON?

Had a son Walter STONES (born c. 1864 in Leeds), who moved to Manchester area and married Emma DAKIN in 1887.
