Lancashire / voters rolls may solve a mystery
« on: Sunday 14 December 14 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
Having dipped out of research for a while, I am trying to solve a mystery. My 2nd cousin sent me a death cert , this is only because of rootschat, I did not know about her and we have been happily sharing information all due to this site.

Can I  ask if anyone has advice how to search voters rolls as I have no experience of this. I have a death cert stating the informant was the son, residence in June 1953 was  72, Clarendon road Swinton Manchester. The initial J , I have found no son J and no one in the family has heard of one, because of the slim chance this could be a living person I was unsure to add the surname.
Any idea's or advice would be greatly appreicated.

Hi all just to say I am back from Spain for good, I still only have what could be packed into the car for the moment, but my research all came with me  ;D

I have just got my Ancestry subcription back, trouble is hubby now want me to look at his lot, I think he's getting the bug.

Thanks for the past help and look forward to many a happy night of research and rootschatting, what a brilliant site full of generous people.

Lancashire / MISSING Benjamin Burnett 1891
« on: Monday 09 August 10 14:04 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find my G Granfather Benjamin Burnett on the 1891 census with no joy, after a few months looking, I'm hoping someone with more experience can check/ advise if he really is missing.

I have his birth Jul 1/4 1872,
His marriage to Ellen Boswell  1896
His death Apr 1951,
Also all other census returns and even his Battalion war dairies for the Great War (thanks to expert help)

In fact everything but his shoe size, but not 1891 census return.
In 1881 he was living with his father Wallace as a boarder, Benjamin was 9 years old
His father died, (mum already dead) in 1885, I have checked the boarding address, he is not there, although his older brother now is (James) he is missing on the 1881 census.
I have checked census returns for family in Salford, Oldham and Yorkshire, Benjamin is not with them, also Industrial schools, and now have run out of options.
Sorry this is long winded, and I hope not too confusing, but needed to ensure it was clear all the information I have, so not to waste anyones time.
Many thanks in advance

« on: Monday 19 April 10 23:04 BST (UK)  »

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Civil air crash 1991
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
Help please I have tried all I know to find information on an air crash which occurred in 1991 near Frampton Cotterell, which I believe is near Bristol, the crash was a civil plane, for which I have the details  of the aircraft and numbers, and also the name of the fatality, due to the fact the person has siblings living I cannot give more details in my posting, however if you feel you have any information I can always send a PM or vice versa.
I know it's a long shot thanks in anticipation

World War Two / HMS Sultan WW2
« on: Monday 15 February 10 21:12 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies in advance for my ignorance, but can someone explain the following.
Ernest Burnett, Stoker 1st class Royal Navy, unit text (?) HMS Sultan, age 22 died 16/02/1945
service number D/KX134337.
From the net it seems HMS Sultan was a naval base in Singapore, so stoker I don't understand.
I have his memorial at Plymouth which also shows the name of his wife, which is not correct, as the wife was my grandmother, and Ernest my great uncle married someone else. So totally confused?
 ???
According to family he died on the Burma railway, would appreciate advice how to confirm this.
Sorry to be dim, but going round in circles.

Ireland / Where do I start in Ireland
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 22:59 GMT (UK)  »
How do I start on Irish research with virtually no information?
I have a GG Grandfather John mccaffery born 1851 in Ireland, married to Mary born 1848 or 1852 also in Ireland, son John T mccaffery born 1871 in Lancashire,  they were boarders on the 1871 census, living in Salford. They are missing on the 1881 census , but I have them on the 1891 census living in Ancoats Manchester.
Is it possible to find out when he came to England, and what part of Ireland. I would be grateful for any advice, as I am just getting my head round English records.
Thanks monica meg  :)

Cheshire / WW2 Keeper of house of ill repute
« on: Saturday 30 January 10 18:01 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate any pointer's to help with another family legend.
My G Grandfather, so it was whispered kept a house of ill repute, during WW2 in Lower Peover, Cheshire. Apparently my father was sent to him from Manchester during the war, after word reaching my Grandmother of the situation, he was quickly collected and returned home.
His name was Benjamin Burnett born 1873 in Salford, Wife Ellen born 1876 in Manchester.
I do not know where to start with this, and cannot trace death index's and have no information on Lower Peover.
Not sure if I really want to verify this :o
