Tipperary / Missing from 1901 Census - Boyle
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 22:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am researching for friends of mine. Their family were the Boyles from Clonmel, Tipperary. I can find them on the 1911 census no problem, but no matter what I try I cannot locate them on the 1901 census. Are parts of Tipperary missing from the 1901 census?

The family are James and Mary Boyle with children Mary 1887, John 1889, Michael 1891, Bridget 1893, Patrick 1894, Catherine 1896, James John 1898, Ellen 1900. The parents and the first five childern were born in Limerick (Tervoe for the children). Catherine, James and Ellen were born at Marlfield just outside of Clonmel. The next child born after the 1901 census was born in Irishtown, Clonmel.

I have looked for them in both Tipperary and Limerick in 1901 with no luck. James Snr was a gardener.

Any suggestions appreaciated.

Thanks

Denise

Dorset / Bennetts, Tanners of Fontmell Magna and Shaftesbury
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 20:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking at the family of Thomas Bennett and Edith Monkton married at Melbury Abbas in 1731, although both from Fontmell Magna. This couple had two sons Walter 1732 and William 1735 both baptised in Fontmell Magna. Around 1748 the family moved to the parish of St James, Shaftesbury. In June 1767 all three males swore oaths on Settlement Certificates (Ancestry) saying they resided in St James, Shaftesbury but had all been born in Fontmell Magna.

Walter had married Jane Clench in St James in 1754 and by 1767 they had five children, namely Robert c 1755, John c 1757, Walter c 1758, Thomas c 1761 and Hannah c 1765. I know Hannah died a month after the Settlement Certificate had been made out and that Walter most likely married Kezia Hunt in Motcombe in 1785 and settled back in his father's home parish of Fontmell Magna, but what happened to Robert, John and Thomas?

There are burials in St Andrew, Fontmell Magna which fit both Robert and John, although I am hoping it is not Walter's son John. There is a possible burial in Fontmell Magna for the mother Jane in 1820, but none for the father Walter.

I have a John Bennett, Cordwainer living in Southampton who gives his home parish as Fontmill near Shastone on an apprentice record in 1784. Fontmill is likely a mistranscription for Fontmell and I know Shastone is another name for Shaftsbury. He died in the first qrtr of 1841 aged 87 which makes his born c 1754 if the age given was correctly. He named one of his sons Walter and he also had a Jane and a William.

Any information greatfully received or if anyone is connected to this family I would love to hear from you.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Burials in Steventon, Hampshire
« on: Wednesday 28 June 17 21:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Would someone be able to look at the burials for this parish for me. I am looking for the burial of a William KEW (CUE etc) who was born in Basingstoke in 1721, married Elizabeth (date and place unknown), raised his family in Steventon and was supposed to have died at the age of 101 i.e. c 1822.

FindMyPast say they have burials for Steventon into the 1800s but they don't seem to go as far as 1822.

Thanks

Nairnshire / Name of Place in Nairnshire
« on: Tuesday 09 May 17 22:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have been reviewing the army records of my 4 x gt grandfather and while I have had it in my mind that he was born in Auldearn, it actually mentions another place name besides Auldearn.

The name is Clowen, which I cannot find on any of the old maps. The closest I can find is Clune, which appears to have been a cluster of crofters cottages on the border of the Auldearn and Ardclach parishes. In fact the parish boundary apparently ran through one of the houses. Today there is an Easter Clune and a Wester Clune but no Clune. So I would say the cottages were abandoned at some point.

I have attached a copy of the relevant part of the document. As the person that wrote it also spelt Auldearn wrong it is possible they wrote what they heard and did not now any different. The person in charge of the Royal Artillery at Fort George at the time was a Capt Weetman who was English, possibly his clerk or what ever was English as well so this seems plausible.

Any opinions on whether you agree that Clowen could be Clune would be appreciated.

Thanks

Banffshire / Bennet/Bennett from Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
« on: Friday 24 February 17 22:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm details of my 5 x gt grandfather John Bennet. From what I have found so far  from the Description Books held in WO 669/260 he was born in Keith, Banffshire c 1748 . He joined the Royal Artillery in 1768 aged 20, as a gunner. He was promoted through the ranks to bombadier, corporal and finally sergeant in 1782. When he attested to the RA he was a mason. John spent some time in Portsmouth Hampshire.  His daughter Sarah married another RA soldier in Portsmouth Cathedral in 1799 and John was a witness.

Bennet/Bennett is a very common name in Keith, Banffshire, but I am currently working on the theory that he was the John Bennet born in 1747 to Alexander Bennet and his wife Isobel Bennet. John was in the middle of the eight children this couple had. His father may have also had two sons by a previous marriage.

There are a number of people who claim to relate back to this couple who have posted over the years, but most of the posts are quite old now. If anyone is still actively researching the descendents of this couple I would love to hear from you. If you have done a DNA test, that would certainly help.

Other Countries / India: Dinapore (Danapur), Bihar - St Stephens Catholic Church
« on: Monday 07 March 16 22:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Has anyone ever researched these church records? I am looking at a family by the name of DeSilva, of Portuguese origin, who were living in Dinapore in the early to mid 1800s.

I have found some references in FindMyPast, ANC, Familysearch and various directories, but they are very patchy and it is hard to put family groups together.

Thanks

According to several sources one of the three HEIC training depots was opened at Newport, Isle of Wight in 1815. Does anyone know exactly were it was and how long it remained in the East India Company hands? I think it was separate from the Albany Barracks of the British Army but could be wrong.

My 3x gt grandfather was an Irishman who joined the HEIC Army in Dec 1834 but did not travel to India until 1835. As the ship he travelled on left London 2 July and Portsmouth on the 9th July, I was thinking there was a strong possibility that he was at Newport.

Thanks

I was wondering if there is someone out there who visits the Christchurch Archives and could look at the Kumara Warden Court Miners Rights Indexes for me to see if they include a Pierce or James Butler.

Record Information print this page

Title Years
Warden’s Court Kumara - Indexes to Miners Rights (R22387177) 1866 - 1876

Item ID Agency Series Accession Record group Box / Item Sep Record no. Part Alternative no. Record type

I did any enquiry to the archives but they want $50 just to look at the indexes. Seems excessive to me. So if there is a kind soul out there who will be visiting and could check for me I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Other Countries / James Butler born 1845 Umballu, Bengal, India
« on: Monday 22 February 16 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for my gt gt gt uncle James Butler. James was the eldest child and only son of Pierce and Frances Butler. Pierce was in the Artillery of the East India Company Army based in the Bengal Presidency. Pierce, James and Bridget (sister of James) left India in 1853 and travelled to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. They were there almost a year before moving to Auckland, New Zealand. That is the last we hear of James. His sister married when she was 15 and died aged 37 in Auckland. His father returned to Ireland in January 1867 after spending a year to eighteen months on the West Coast of the South Island (NZ). He was possibly at the gold fields.

A thorough search of all James Butlers who married or died in New Zealand has turned up nothing.

Any information on any James Butlers that could possibly be ours would be appreciated.

Thanks

Denise
