I have a list of the 20 names of the Scottish team from which I'm trying to isolate any from the Aberdeen area. The team comprised the top marksmen drawn from the Scottish regiments.
I can initially do this by using FreeCen but I'm wondering if that in itself offers enough information.

Were serving soldiers recorded in the same way as the civilian population or was there a separate Army list which would, I believe, be based on the current location of the regiment?

The Gordon Highlanders recruited mainly in the Aberdeen area. Should I be looking for some sort of regimental record?

Warwickshire / Gotobed David June 1843 - information request
« on: Thursday 26 November 15 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any info on this person.
It appears he was a Gunmaker in Birmingham circa 1880.
Borne in Stratford, household record for 1861 & 1891 but nothing in-between.
There is a trading address of D Gotobed & Co. 330 Lodge Road, Birmingham but unsure what date it would be. Also found 1 reference to 350 Lodge Road.

I've had some of his papers for perhaps 50 years. He's not a relative but once worked on the farm where I grew up and where I found these papers.

The papers relate to a) his War Record and b) to the award of a Bar to his existing Military Medal.
Q Company was a Gas team.
I've often wondered how he won the 2 awards.
Eventually I hope to perhaps trace living relatives and pass on these papers.
Our old brave soldiers should be remembered.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Preston Candover area - Hardy - Look up request
« on: Thursday 10 January 13 07:34 GMT (UK)  »
This is a revised request - earlier information was partially incorrect

JH Hardy Preston Candover area seeking confirmation of spelling and birth details.

Having rechecked the original reference I find I made an error in respect of this individual's age.

The 1st hand reference states:

Aged 45-50 (this is in 1953) so assumedly born roughly between 1900 and 1910 (I'd recalled that he was a little younger).

Residing at Preston Candover in 1953/4 and noted in a trade directory of 1956 (this supplied by a member of Roots who's reply I can no longer find and have no copy of original evidence).
Profession - Owner Taxi Driver - taken from my original 1st hand reference. There may be another occupation listed as I don't think a Taxi driver would be enough of a living. I know he combined it with teaching people to drive.
5 children, 2 at school so aged 5-15, and 3 older - this in 1953/4.
Known as Jonathan Hugh Hardy in 1953/4 - different spellings or order of Christian names may apply but this is taken from my 1st hand reference. Possibly a name added.

I tend to believe the family may be from Hampshire, but not necessarily this area till later. There are many Hardys in the Hampshire area.
Possibly he was demobbed in Aldershot?

The 3 elder children are almost certainly born in the 1930's. Possibly the 2 younger ones are post war and aged 5-9 years. This is supposition , but sort of fits with someone who was possibly on service.

Note: There is recorded a JH Hardy, Hartley Wintney b1915. This is not him, it is John Henry H. I have his birth certificate if it is of use to someone.

I've been working on the above process of elimination, listing all the Hardys on FreeBMD then checking this against the number of children. So far no luck.

A simple confirmation of the name and spelling may make this task much easier.
I live 300 miles north of Hampshire so am unable to undertake the on the ground research I think this search may require.

The above Trade directory listing may yield information, as may the Electoral register 1945-54, or local church baptismal records.
Please, can someone help me with a few local lookups?
My grateful thanks

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Jone HOBBS Market Lavington 1661
« on: Tuesday 09 February 10 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
I've followed the Hobbs line back from Delicia Gertrude Hobbs (B.1900) to 1661 when Peter, son of Jone Hobbs (no father given) was born.
At this point I can go no further though I know there were Hobbs in the area (info from another Roots member who also came to a stop at this point).

I live 300 miles north of Wiltshire so really can not access records directly.

Is a look up request realistic to see if we can get further back or is this the end of the line?

I'll also be posting a look up for Richardsons of Shalbourne as I'm having lots of difficulty getting beyond 1840 (it appears they weren't hot on registering births)

Berkshire / Colebrook Berkshire ? Help needed
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
Please can someone help me with this.
I have a Great Great Grandfather (William Richardson) whose listing in the 1861 census gives as place of birth, Colebook (Berkshire) on the Findmypast census listing (assumedly Colebrook) and Coolebrook on the original transcription.
I'm trying to make sense of this.
I can't find Colebrook as a registration area or even locate it on Google.
However the Visionofbritain web site makes reference to it in the early 1600's. Was it absorbed as a larger nearby town grew?
Help please

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Richardson - Kingsclere / Ashmansworth c1865
« on: Wednesday 13 January 10 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find yet another relative - so far without luck.
John Richardson was my Great Grandfather.
The 1871 census gives B.1865, Ashmansworth.
Parents William (B. circa 1840 Berkshire or Wiltshire) and Mary Ann Alder (B.circa 1839).
I can find no birth record for John on FreeBMD or IGI records.
Help please  :)

Census and Resource Discussion / IGI records - a question of accuracy?
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 20:22 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching the Hobbs family, Littleton, Wiltshire.
Still trying to get to grips with the pre 1837 searches.
I was directed to IGI searches and have just been on the Familysearch site.
I find parents James and Mary B.circa 1788 & 1789 (I believe this part is correct) and apparently 9 children with a 10 year gap lets say between phase 1 & 2,  but missing 1 important one that I have dates for in 1809.
Interestingly I also find a

Martha Hobbs Christening:  08 NOV 1829
 Littleton, West Lavington, Wiltshire, England
Marriage:  24 NOV 1837 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really?
How realistic is it that I'm asked to believe the accuracy of this site?

Feedback on this would be most interesting given that there are only supposed to be 5 children borne between 1809 & 1818.
