Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / An old one to play with
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 20:32 BST (UK)  »
I've been sent here from another thread, to see what anyone can do with this photo. Unfortunately my grandmother did some photo restoration of her own when she was a little girl, and tried to colour it in! I'd love to see what can be done with it, perhaps some more colour added.

The lady in the centre is my 3x great grand aunt, Jane Ogilvie (b.1808). Sitting on the carpet in a red dress is my GG grandmother Kitty (b.1857) and her sister Allie is on her right (b.1853). Jane ran a girls' school and the photo is of her with her boarders.

On the back someone has written that Jane's face is turned away from the camera to hide the fact that she had to have half her jaw bone removed, before the days of anaesthetics!

Europe / German ancestor - when did he arrive?
« on: Friday 01 August 08 19:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

This may be a bit of a long shot, but I'm trying to find out when and with whom my ancestor Adam Hanisch came to England.

He was born in Koblenz, Germany in 1853 and was definately in England by 1871.

I know some ancestry subscriptions include access to some indexed passenger lists, but my UK subscription doesn't let me view them.

I have seen him indexed variously as: Adam Hanisch; Adam Heinisch; Adam Heinish; Ackani Hanisch; Adam Harrisch. (And there are probably more variations on this).

Regards,
Adam

Armed Forces / Boer War question
« on: Tuesday 14 February 06 12:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have been informed that my 2x great grandmother's brother Joseph Ogilvie Forth (b1852, North Shields) 'became a Boer and fought in the SA War'. In that he married in Fiji in 1888 and then went on to New South Wales, Australia, I assume it was the in the first conflict with the Boers in 1880.

I am not looking for details of service etc (probably an impossible task). I would just like to know if it was common for British born men to join and fight for the Boers.

Cheers,
Adam

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help dating photo please
« on: Wednesday 08 February 06 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm interested to see if anyone has any idea roughly when this may have been taken. There's not a great deal to go on as she's been cropped to make just a head and shoulders portrait.

If she's who I think she is (my great great great grandmother Sarah Akehurst) then she was born in 1820.

Thanks,
Adam
