Surrey / Harriot Ann HOMAN bn 1861 - missing from 1871 census onwards
« on: Thursday 28 September 17 21:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello - hoping I'm posting in the correct place.  I would like some assistance please in locating some further information or some advice as to where best to look online for Harriot - I have searched for marriage/death registration with all sorts of forename/surname variants and the census' on from 1871 too but have had no luck.

Harriot Ann Homan - reg: Sep 1/4 1861 Romford, Essex

daughter of John Homan and Ellen

In the 1871 census for REG DIST: Richmond, Civil Parish Mortlake   870/80/29 is recorded as:

Hariot N Holman age 9 birthplace:  Rainham Essex

I did think she may have used her middle name Ann when she was older or possibly Hannah but have still not located her.  Any help appreciated.

Thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Sacred Heart Convent Island Bay Wellington
« on: Monday 17 February 14 00:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My grandmother more than likely (most probably) went to Sacred Heart Convent Island Bay from a young age circa 1918 - 1925 at least.

Enquiring today if anyone can help me locate the whereabouts of the records of the old Convent. On Archives NZ Archway index for the convent primary school there is a 'no date' box of primary school records but I was wondering if NZSG have any indexes for Catholic schools in Wellington for those years or should I be contacting the Catholic Schools archives people - tried looking up who that would be but drawn a blank - the residence of my great grandmother Lily Belcher on the Electoral roll for 1919 is Wellington North which appears to be quite a distance from Island Bay and the school.

Any help or ideas appreciated thank you

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Just an enquiry about a photo
« on: Saturday 15 June 13 06:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with an idea for a photo I have taken around 1890-1900.  Its from a locket so it's quite small and head and shoulders of my grandmother's grandmother.  I would dearly love to add the 'rest of the lady' if possible - is there a way if I scan two pics that the head and shoulders could be combined to a 'dress' basically - it's really only a matter of getting the right 'dress' to match in - I have a wedding pic around the same date.  Otherwise is there a 'stock' period clothing photographic site I could match one with.  The photo would only end up being about 2" x 3".

Help appreciated.  Thanks

The Lighter Side / Our Ancestors Lives all Done in a Flash!
« on: Saturday 15 June 13 05:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I was wondering after reading a lot of different posts on these boards, and other sites, how other people mayfeel when looking up the records online; especially the UK census, and like me in a few short hours, a whole lifetime of one person or a family can be viewed and sometimes if I've had a really 'good' day; in say 4 hours, have gone from birth to census' then to burial etc .  Sometimes I feel a bit like I've desecrated their memory - my ancestors' lifetime coping with poverty/politics/religion/employment/child bearing/child birth etc of the times all condensed, abridged, indexed.

I started my research 20 years ago and it was quite a slog then with writing letters; visiting archives; librarys; peering at microfilm etc., screeds of notes, joining the history societies to get the magazine to get the 'surname interests etc.   It also took time to 'digest' the info gathered - some of it vague and some of it irrelevant and sometime a success.  Nowadays I can download/upload/copy/paste and wham - done and dusted!

Anybody have similiar thoughts?

Gloucestershire / My Brick Wall: William Richard Richmond bn 1834
« on: Saturday 15 June 13 02:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi - hoping I'm posting this in the right place and hoping someone might be able to help me;  looking for the family of William Richard Richmond aka Richard Richmond. He was married in 1863 to Agnes McArthur in Invercargill, New Zealand about age 30.  On his death registration it said he had been resident in NZ for 30 years and was born in Cheltenham, England, both parents unknown, fathers occupation: butcher.   I do have his date of birth - 9 June 1834 but no actual birthplace.  I cannot find any baptism in the various indexes onliine for 1832 - 1836 apart from a couple of 'hopefuls' that aren't in Gloucestershire but the other family names don't seem to fit in.

I've searched the 1841 1851 and 1861 census indexes; so far have only seen  the actual  transcripts for Dursley, Gloucs (that William Richmond bn 1832 turned out to be William Daniel Richmond) - I've only found very few Richmond names that were living in Gloucestershire at the time of each census and born there.  I thought that was a bit strange actually.

I feel that maybe Cheltenham may have been the main town near where he was from or even just the last place he was living before going to NZ - I have also tried to find siblings or parents using his own children's names: Susan Agnes, Rhoda Rebecca, Isabella Jane, Nina Elizabeth and the one son also named William Richard.  Nothing appears to come together.

I've posted this query in the NZ area of Rootschat a couple of years ago hoping that William might have been 'lost' by a Cheltenham Richmond family researcher.

Anyway would appreciate any clues; comments etc that might send me in the right direction for further searching (I've scoured the available UK newspaper on line indexes available - 100's of William Richmonds and Richard Richmonds - thought I might find a reference to him somewhere.

Thank you

My NZ families: Richmond, McArthur, Dallas, Lee, Titshall, Larsen, Belcher

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Suffolk County Record Office Lookup - Help Please
« on: Monday 25 February 13 22:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am wondering if some kind person could please look up a baptism for me at the record office to see if there was anything additional to the following that I have found online for the IGI and Pallots:

William Gooch Titsall

mother: Maria Titsall
place: St Mary's Woodbridge Suffolk
date: 12 July 1816

I have seen a scan of the Pallots bp for this entry and it indicates that William was illegitimate and Maria was a servant.  I wondered if there could be note somewhere that indicated Maria's age.

I have searched all possible UK indexes for a baptism for Maria (or Mary) Titsall (and all variants of the name I could possibly find) but have been unsuccessful. I have also searched for Maria Gooch - but it's difficult to match her to a family without knowing an approximate age when she had William.  Maria could have been in her teens or early 40's.

William Gooch Titsall (or later: Titshall) had a daughter baptised Maria Mary.  On William's marriage certificates his father is named as William Gooch Titshall but I think that was not wholly true.

Any ideas as to where else to search would be much appreciated.  Thank you

Essex / 1830's Millers/Mills near Barking, Essex
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone in Essex; hoping someone could help me with some info on a possible mill/windmill that would be near/in or around Barking or East Ham in 1838.  I had deduced that my miller ancestor, William Titshall, who married Sarah Rayner in 1838 - Parish Church East Ham would be working somewhere in the vicinity.  I have finally got their marriage registration and the residence for the couple was Barking.  There is a long list of mills in Essex on Wiki for the but nothing appears to be near.  The witnesses at the time were William Dennison and William Frost Howell - can't find anything on 1841 census to suggest a mill or miller connection.

At some point by 1841; William and Sarah Titshall had made their way over to live in Isleworth, Middx where she had died in early February.  Sarah's father was Bartholemew Rayner, and she was baptised in 1816 in Billericay - Independant Meeting House.

Any help appreciated, thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Agnes McArthur - Invercargill 1860's
« on: Saturday 12 November 11 01:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, would much appreciate any help with my query:

My Gt Gt Grandfather, [William] Richard Richmond married a young lady by the name of Agnes McArthur - age 20 on 21 Dec 1863 at St John’s Church, Invercargill.

I have no further information about Agnes McArthur.

Richard and Agnes Richmond had 3 daughters; Susan Agnes, Rhoda Rebecca, Isabella Jane and Nina Elizabeth and one son, William Richard.   Looking at the girls names I thought at least one of them would be named for Agnes’ mother and possibly a couple of her sisters.

Agnes died in January 1873 (age 31) and is buried in the Invercargill cemetery with her daughter Rhoda and husband William Richmond.

I also found:
the burial in 1879 of Isabella McArthur in the Invercargill cemetery with a daughter Marion Hume McArthur buried in 1862 and husband Duncan buried in 1888.

[Paperspast has a lot about a Duncan McArthur that was immigration officer in Invercargill and was ‘late of Oban’]

I found Duncan McArthur’s arrival at Bluff, with wife and 4 girls and 3 boys on the ship “ Melbourne” on paperspast  website - Otago Witness, 26 January 1861

I can find Agnes McArthur in the Scottish census’ for 1851 but none appear to be with Duncan and Isabella.

Any hints on how to go about finding more about Agnes would be much appreciated; I don’t have a middle name or initial.  She made her ‘mark’ on the marriage register - in all probability I don’t think Duncan’s children would be unable to write their names, him being of a sound community standing and an immigration officer.   I’ve tried to ‘nut’ it out for some time.  I don’t know if she was born in New Zealand or not.
