Devon Lookup Requests / Catholic baptism Stonehouse/Devonport father was a soldier
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
This is a big vague so apologies for that!  I am looking for Joseph Hadley (or Adley) who was born in Devonport/Stonehouse in 1826.  His father was John Hadley of Sligo and he had been  in the Army, serving in Canada and the Peninsular War.  I think he might have been in the hospital in Devon as he had ongoing illnesses following his discharge.  Joseph was definitely born down there and I am hoping there will be a catholic baptism for him.  If anyone can look this up for me I would be grateful.  I have about exhausted my search.

Thanks

Library and FHS Lookups / Doncaster and Sheffield Archives Lookup
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 13:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Is anyone able to go to the Doncaster Archives please?  I would like the information on the following:
SNAITH MARRIAGE C of E
Marriage:  George Berry and Ann Watson married in Snaith (probably St Lawrence) between April and June 1875.  Both were widowed and of particular interest is George's father's name and occupation.  I think this man changed his name from Freebury to Bury/Burry and later Berry.

SNAITH is only at DONCASTER but the records below for Doncaster are also at Sheffield.  If anyone goes to Sheffield and they will also take photocopies I will happily send a cheque to cover the cost.  Doncaster Catholic records are on micro film and they do not have any means of printing off??

CATHOLIC - ST PETER'S IN CHAINS DONCASTER
Marriage Patrick Crawley and Isabella Watson 5 June 1865

Baptism Elizabeth Crawley 20 May 1866

Death Isabella Crawley died 3 November 1884
Death Patrick Crawley died 13 June 1905

I know that Isabella and his wife were buried in unconsecrated ground in Doncaster Cemetery but I believe that Doncaster Archives have the catholic death records.

Many thanks in advance if you are able to do this.

England / missing baptisms
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 10:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm stuck on several direct ancestors where the baptism record does not exist (I've trawled through them) .  I'm talking about the 1700s - a marriage can be found but of course there's so little detail as we get further back so it's impossible to say for sure who the guy's father is.

What do other researchers do - just stop there?  It's so frustrating because so often the baptisms for other people, who I must be siblings or cousins etc, are there but not my chappie!

This is happening again and again.

Also, how do we for sure determine which Joe Bloggs it is when the naming paterns are all the same throughout the generations?  I have Thomas William, Joseph etc etc thoughout the family each one close in age but obviously belonging to different fathers with the grandfather in common.

It's relatively easy during the census years but beyond that it is very very difficult.  Doesn't help even if the occupation is given - they all did the same - farmers!

Just wondered what other people do.  I see so many trees going back to the 1500s and at times 1200s but I don't think it's possible to be accurate if the families were 'ordinary' as opposed to landowners and aristocracy.  I see little point in adding names and generations without proof.

Help please.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Look up marriage Otley
« on: Friday 26 November 10 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the parish records for Otley marriages?

Thomas Heron and Sarah Cawthray were married on 16 Mar 1829 in Otley.  I would like to know the names of the witnesses and if their father's names were entered in the register.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / What period? Which regiment?
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Sorry about the poor quliaty of the photo but hopefully it will be good enough for someone to recognise the uniform, period and medals on the young man.

Can anyone help.  This photo, we think, was taken in Norfolk.

Does anyone have an opinion on the ages of the couple?  Everyone seems to look much older in the old photos, due I suppose to the formality of their dress and severe hair styles.

Any help would be much appreciated.  I've looked for the medals on the internet but can't find anything that looks like the one of the man's chest.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Uniform identification and dates
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 10:36 BST (UK)  »
I've had a lot of problems trying to do something with these photos that were sent to me in word format all on one page so please accept my apologies for the poor quality etc.

Please note that there are 3 photos in this PDF, hopefully they have all attached OK.  Page 2 is blank on the file so please scroll on to find 3 and 4.

The old man - can someone help date this?

The family group - I know it's awful quality but - this photo was taken at Cella Studio Bargate Lincs.  The two men wearing the aprons and hats - any ideas?  The lady in the middle - does her dress and cap give any indication as to the period?

The photo of the couple.  I've tried to identify the uniform without success.  Can anyone help?  What about the 2 'badges'?  I can't find any pics of those either.  WE think the photo was taken in Norfolk.  At least his epaulettes, cuffs and 'badges' are clear to see.  The lady - any ideas on dates?

Thank you so much
