Australia / Seeking Ada Sullivan
« on: Sunday 10 September 17 04:58 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone assist me? I am seeking any details on my grandmother,  Ada Sullivan in the years between 1874 when she was born and December 5, 1891 when she married Joseph Job Downes in the Lutheran parsonage in Adelaide. I believe that Ada was brought up as a baby or child with her aunt, Mary Sullivan in Grote Street, Kent Town. Mary was a widow and police searcher. If there is any census of those individual family members living in Grote Street during that 17 year  period, it may confirm Ada was living there. I believe her birth mother was really Mary Haylock of Carisbrook who agreed to the informal adoption of her daughter. Although Ada listed Mary Sullivan's husband, Michael as her father, he had died back in 1866.

Australia / Seeking John Marriott's siblings

Can anyone assist me with some information on John Marriott of Campbells Creek Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. John was the son of Thomas Marriott and Sarah Garner who married on December 6, 1829 in the St. Mary the Virgin church in Eccles, Lancashire. John was born in Eccles around 1832. I would love to know any details on John's siblings and when John travelled to Australia.

He married Jane Stow in Campbells Creek, Victoria on May 21, 1857. I don't know when the Stows travelled to Australia.

John died on 25 March, 1891 and Jane died on August 2, 1897 both share a grave in the Campbells Creek cemetery with two of their children  who died early. I know the names of the children. John was a leading orchardist in the Loddon region and survived a major flood in Campbells Creek and the wreck of the 'Cheviot' ship. An exciting life!

Family History Beginners Board / Searching for Ada or Michael Sullivan
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 23:42 GMT (UK)  »
I'm wondering if anyone in Australia can help me trace my grandmother, Ada Sullivan who married Joseph Downes in Adelaide on December 5, 1891?

She was probably born around December 15, 1874. Ada would have been barely 16. Her father is said to have been Michael Sullivan who would have been born around 1850. It's possible that Ada was adopted. A rumour is that she was born in Melbourne. She was living in Kent Town, South Australia at the time of her marriage. Her mother's name is unknown. Ada died on April 8, 1945.

Dublin / Seeking Ada Sullivan
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 23:48 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me in tracing something of the history of Ada Sullivan?

She is thought to have been born in Ireland on December 13, 1874 or 1875. She was raised in a Roman Catholic orphanage (name unknown) in Dublin and later emigrated to Adelaide in South Australia where she married Joseph Downes on December 5, 1891. I can't find anything on the Sullivan family who adopted her. Would records exist on when she was taken into the orphanage, who her parents were and under what circumstances she was given out for adoption?

Ada's background is a mystery and I'd be very grateful  for any advice or assistance.
