Armed Forces / 1851 CESUS LOOKUP :RINGWOOD, HANTS
« on: Thursday 16 June 05 12:41 BST (UK)  »

Is anyone able to look up the HIGH STREET, RINGWOOD, HAMPSHIRE in the 1851 ( and or 1841) Census please?

I am looking for the family of WILLIAM  and CHARLOTTE LANGER -- both aged 45 in 1851 -- he a Tailor.

and I need a list of everyone present  BECAUSE I am looking for a son of Wm. & Charlotte , (name NOT known)  and who is missing from all subsequent Census returns.

but who is known to have existed because HIS son (aged 2 in the 1861 Census) is listed with Wm & Charlotte as 'grandson' in the 1861.

William and Charlotte, and the grandson's  uncles and aunts,(all tailors), lived at No 44 High St, Ringwood, (1861) : at No 30 High St. (1871) : at No 47 High St. (1881) : at No 36 High St (1891)

all of which makes me suppose they were probably in the High St in 1841 and in 1851 ???

The missing son would most likely have been aged 19 in 1861 (if eldest child), or aged 16 if 3rd child.

I have twice before posted this request on the Hampshire 'interests' place , without any response at all.

So I am hoping for better luck here.

thanks in anticipation,   PERCY

Armed Forces / WHAT UNIFORM ? WHAT RANK?
« on: Thursday 16 June 05 12:10 BST (UK)  »
Would some kind soul apply their mind to this one please ?

The man in the picture below served in submarines in WW I .    He left home  at the age of about 13 (around 1899/1900) and is believed to have  "run away to sea."

Aged 4 in the 1891 Census , he is not listed in the 1901 Census.

His name is  WILLIAM EDWARD LANGER born Ringwood, Hampshire  1st 1/4 1887.

What uniform is he wearing here ?   What is his rank -- if the uniform shows one ?

How can I find out his Service record ?

Thanks in anticipation,   PERCY

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / 1841:1851 Census Look up please
« on: Sunday 12 June 05 16:36 BST (UK)  »

If it is possible, would someone be kind enough to look up  the 1841 and or 1851 Census for the HIGH ST, RINGWOOD, HANTS.

There should be:-

HEAD of household : WILLIAM LANGER (aged 35 in '41 and 45 in '51) a Tailor born 1806 Hants, Ringwood
WIFE:                        CHARLOTTE  "       (same age as husband)                "       "         "          "

and some children etc.,   I NEED the names of everyone present BECAUSE  the William named above is shown as the GRANDFATHER of  GEORGE EDWARD LANGER aged 2 in the 1861 Census , and subsequent census, but I cannot find ANY TRACE of GEORGE EDWARD'S parent's names.

I suspect they must have died, but, not having names, cannot confirm it.

In the 1861 Census Gge Ed's uncles and aunts are all listed  -- with Grandfather William --- at 44 High St.
The two eldest being aged 28 and 27, and the next being 25.

It seems likely therefore that G.E's father would have been EITHER 19 or 16 in 1851 : and 9 or 6 in 1841.

Members of the family remained at various addresses in the HIGH ST right through the 1901 Census

In hope,           PERCY

New Zealand Completed Requests / Death Look-ups Please
« on: Thursday 09 June 05 17:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

SYDNEY REGINALD FULLER SANDYS and his wife M...... SANDYS (born Grieves), arrived in New Zealand (from South Africa) in 1907.
Sydney served on the Western Front in WW1: was wounded in action, shipped back to NZ, and  invalided  out in 1919.  His death was registered in Auckland 7th April 1951.

Sydney & M..... had two sons as follow:-  STUART FULLER SANDYS birth regd. Auckland 27 Sept 1907 :  and LIONEL ARDEN FULLER SANDYS birth regd. Auckland 14 June 1910.

Would some be kind enough to see if they can find out whether/ or when STUART and/or LIONEL died,
and let me have any details they find please?

Also, the Christian name of Sydney's wife if it should show up anywhere ---- or indeed anything at all they may turn up about the SANDYS ; including any surviving family who may be interested in the enormous detail I have on Sydney's UK origins.

Thanks in anticipation,    PERCY

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 Ringwood Look up please
« on: Thursday 09 June 05 17:35 BST (UK)  »
IN the 1861 Census GEORGE EDWARD LANGER : aged 2 : is listed at 44 High St, Ringwood, Hampshire, together with his Grandparents WILLIAM LANGER (Head of household) and CHARLOTTE -- and assorted uncles & aunts --- BUT NOT HIS PARENTS.

George Edward appears again in the 1871 Census with his Grandparents etc., and in the 1881/91 and 1901 census elsehere --- BUT NO INDICATION IN ANY OF THEM AS TO THE NAMES OF or the whereabouts of his parents.

If possible, would someone be kind enough to look in the 1841 and/or 1851  High Street, Ringwood, Hampshire, Census for WILLIAM LANGER (head) CHARLOTTE LANGER (wife) and list ALL the occupants present -------- which, with luck, should give me the missing name of George Edward's father.

The eldest (aunt) shown in 1861 was age 28, and the next two were uncles aged 27 and 25 : Gge Ed's father may therefore have been 16/ or 19 if he shows in the 1851 .

Kind regards,   PERCY

Would someone with access be kind enough to look up the 1841 and 1851 Census Returns for the OCCUPANTS of the following address:-

56 AMWELL STREET.     Amwell street is just off Rosebury Avenue ; postal district

something like EC1.     I believe the County would be MIDDLESEX, and the district would be either FINSBURY, or HOLBORN.

I would expect to find one or more  WILLIAM HANCOCK (s) with other family members and possibly servants.   One of the Williams would probably be about 50 years old.

Any information will be gratefully received.

The Common Room / " GENTLEMAN. VESTRY CLERK St GILES & BLOOMSBURY" ?
« on: Thursday 07 April 05 13:45 BST (UK)  »

What exactly would a man described in the  1891 Census as  "Gentleman. Vestry Clerk St Giles and Bloomsbury." do ?

Was he a gentleman volunteer -------  or was it a paid occupation ?    He and his wife each had money.

World War One / WHAT REGT : RANK : WAR RECORD ?
« on: Saturday 19 February 05 17:27 GMT (UK)  »

This picture can confidently be dated 1917.

Can any make out what Regiment this man was in ?

Can anyone say for sure whether he has two, or three, (rank) stripes.  That is,  is he a corporal -- or a sergeant ?

Lastly I have been unable to make any sense of , or get anywhere with , World War I  records.  To find this chap at all let alone what medals he had .  I know from his letters that he saw active service on the continent -- this picture being taken on a short home leave before returning to the front 1917.

His name is SYDNEY REGINALD SANDYS : born 1st 1/4 1879 at ROYSTON, HERTS.

At the outbreak of the War he was 35 years old : He almost certainly volunteered as soon as possible ----- and is known to have survived the War , and emigrated to Taranaki, New Zealand.

Answers  will be gratefully acknowledged by  Yours,    Percy.
