Sussex Lookup Requests / Oving Lookup Request (exact date known)
« on: Friday 22 June 12 23:18 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for someone who has access to a fiche of the Oving parish records for 1769 (not a transcript).

John Clark was baptised on 10 December 1769, and I need to know his parents names. The transcript from PRTS and SFHG transcripts say his father was John Clark, but that doesn't seem to fit. I'm hoping it's a transcription error and his father was actually Thomas Clark.

I'd be very grateful if someone could confirm that one way or the other.

Thanks in advance.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Eastbourne Parish Lookup, please (I know the exact date)
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 01:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for someone to check the original register for Eastbourne St. Mary for me, please. It's the marriage between Margery Frankwell and Mr Sinnock on 11 Oct 1649.

The Sussex Family History Group transcript have the groom's forename as Charles. Family Search has Chas. But I'm rather hoping that both are transcription errors and it's actually Elias.

Is there any chance someone could take a look for me next time they're in the Record Office? Thanks in advance.

PS - When looking at the 17th century baptism records for Hailsham, I came across the most uniquely and appropriately named child I've ever seen! Anyone like to take a guess??? I'll give you a clue: she was the baseborn daughter of Anne Clever.

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Banbury Baptism Lookup, please
« on: Monday 09 May 11 11:02 BST (UK)  »
Is there someone who can look up a baptism record in Banbury for me, please? It's for Sarah Cowper, born approx 1814.

After some struggles with the 1841 census, and doing some checking with marriage records I think there may have been two Sarah Cowpers baptised in Banbury about that time. Hopefully one will be listed as Sarah Anne (not mine) and the other as plain old Sarah.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Canada / Where to start?
« on: Friday 01 April 11 17:17 BST (UK)  »
I'm reasonably comfortable doing UK research, but have hit a blank now that I need to research some Canadian history. I have a family who arrived in New Brunswick in 1919, intending to settle in Edmonton Alberta. I have them on passenger lists both leaving Liverpool at arriving at New Brunswick, but nothing after that. I don't know whether they ever arrived in Edmonton, and can't see anyway of finding out. I'd hope I'd find a child's marriage or parent's death, but it seems there are no easily accessible BMD indexes for Canada, and they're too late for any censuses.

So how would you advise I proceed?

The Common Room / How do you record lists of records you've searched?
« on: Friday 15 October 10 21:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm about 12 months into serious family research, and all the low-hanging fruit has long gone. I'm now at the point where I'm attacking dead ends. The problem is that I can't research every week (or even every month) and I sometimes forget what records I've looked in (or I can't read my own handwriting!).

So here's a simple question. How do you record which records you've examined and failed to find any results? A simple list attached as a note to the person? A clever database/spreadsheet? The back of an envelope? Or something else.

And now the slightly more complicated question. How do you store what parish records are accessible in which locations? For example, Parish A might have baptisms available of FreeReg, marriages on FindMyPast, and burials only on mf at the Record Office. Parish B might have baptisms on ancestry, marriages at the local FHS, and burials on a CD I don't own yet. How do you keep track of all that?

(I'm using TNG to store my data. I have FTM2011 too, but I prefer TNG.)

England / Online version of ParLac (Parish locator)
« on: Monday 30 August 10 00:43 BST (UK)  »
I'm designing an online version, map-based of Parloc. You can view a test version of the site here: http://www.familyandlocalhistory.com/parloc-testing-page/

I'm aware that it needs documentation, but if you have any comments about how the page could be improved and made more useful, I'd be glad to hear them.

England / Updated IGI Batch numbers
« on: Friday 05 February 10 00:54 GMT (UK)  »
As Hugh Wallis' excellent IGI batch numbers site hasn't been updated for a long time, I decided to have a go at creating my own index of batch numbers, mainly for my own purposes. So far I've covered the batch numbers C000000 to C060000, which results in about 17,000 valid batches, and am adding about 7,500 valid batches per day. You'll be able to guess that I'm automating the process! The downside is that bad data on IGI won't be cleaned up.

So, here's some questions:
  • Would an up-to-date batch number index be useful?
  • Is there anything you'd like to do with batch numbers that you can't do on Hugh's site?
  • What is the best way of keeping the data up-to-date and free from errors?
  • At the moment my system doesn't cope with batches that cover multiple parishes. How much of a problem is this?

I won't necessarily be able to implement all suggestions, but I would like to know what others would find useful.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Moses George COCK(S) in Starston
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 02:32 GMT (UK)  »
As best as I'm able to tell from the censuses, Moses George Cocks was born around 1793 in Starston, Norfolk. Can you help find his baptism, and perhaps those of any siblings? Cocks may be spelled as COCK, and he often dropped the Moses.

He married an Ann, presumably around 1815-1820, though as Ann was from Norfolk you guys probably can't help on that :).

I'd be grateful for any help you can offer. Thanks!
