Antrim / Looking for school records
« on: Monday 28 April 14 12:18 BST (UK)  »
Can someone advise please? How would I find the most likely school attended by a family c 1890's?  Were irish schools specific to religous groups or multi-denominational?  Would it just be a question of finding the nearest school to the home address and seeing if records exist?  Thanks

Antrim / Crebilly graveyard?
« on: Thursday 17 February 11 12:55 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone with local knowledge of the Ballymena area help me please? I have just been browsing The Braid website and was surprised to find a couple of names of interest referring to Crebilly cemetery.  There are no dates given so presume it is an old headstone.  I now need to find out the religious denomination of this cemetery, the location, and if there are any further interment records held by the cemetery authorities.

The names match those of a couple I have living c 1879 in the Ahoghill area so would not expect them to be buried as far away as what appears to be Ballymena town.

Thank you

Charlotte

Antrim / Lost - Eliza, Rose & Sarah Graffin
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 11:57 GMT (UK)  »
Eliza, Rose and Sarah Graffin lived in Casheltown, Portglenone in 1894 and were all single. I have not been able to find any birth records for them. I have also checked for marriages using alternative surname spellings, checked for emigration and looked in both the 1901 and 1911 census.

Their mother Margaret was 71 at the time of her death in 1894 and so this is the only positive indication I have of their likely ages.  The marriage date I have for Margaret (1853) is not reliable because I cannot prove I have the correct person due to absence of maiden name and husband's name on the death records.

I am wondering if I have missed something really obvious here and hoping someone can suggest where else I can search as all three sisters seem to have disappeared into thin air.

I have a photograph of my grandfather printed on metal.  I think it must have been taken somewhere between 1895 and 1917, the most likely date being 1903.  It is oval with a curved surface and ever since I first remember seeing it sometime in the 1960's it has been a brownish colour.  It became damaged several years ago with a crack running lengthwise accross the front but this has now opened up and a papery yellow film is parting to reveal a surprisingly clear, grey/white image.

Is there any way the photograph can be restored or is it best to tear off the film and try scanning the image before it deteriorates further.  The back is quite rusty.

Thanks

World War Two / How do I find out where an army unit was during WW2?
« on: Wednesday 14 October 09 10:05 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out where and how my uncle sustained his injuries in WW2.  I know that he was possibly in France or Belgium as according to his service record he was sent out with the BEF on 13/9/39.  He was with 62 section of the RAOC but sustained serious injuries in March 1940 from which he never fully recovered although he survived until 1981.

Does anyone know how I would find out further information as there is very little in his service record book?

Peeblesshire / Lanerick? Peebleshire
« on: Monday 29 June 09 10:18 BST (UK)  »
James McQuade gave his place of birth on the 1911 Wales census as what looks like Lanerick or Lanerich, Peebleshire.  I have looked at a modern map of the area but as it could be a local name and also boundaries may have changed over the years I wondered if anyone could suggest where I should search for his birth, which was c 1850.

(He gave his birth place as Leith on the 1901 census but a trip to the records in Edinburgh drew a blank with that location)

Thanks

Ireland / Can no longer get index images on Family Search BMD
« on: Friday 20 February 09 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
Back in January, just after the new Family Search launched, I was able to view the BMD indexes themselves for some of the names I was searching.  I have just revisited the site and find that I can no longer view any images, in fact the images just don't appear to be available any more which is very disappointing.

Has this happened to anyone else's searches? I don't think its anything to do with my PC as I have the latest Flash Player.

Antrim / Valuation query
« on: Monday 26 January 09 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have just been looking at the Griffiths Valuation online at http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie.  and noticed a list of numbers in the left hand column which apparently relate to a map.  Can anyone please tell me if these references were the same ones used for the 1911 census?

It might be just a co-incidence but I have found someone with the same family name living at a house with the same reference number in the same townland in the Griffiths and the 1911.  Does this mean it is the same house? (and hopefully another ancestor)

Thank you

Occupation Interests / Farmer & Butcher?
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 17:45 GMT (UK)  »
My gr.grandfather's occupation varies on records between farm labourer, general labourer, farmer and butcher.  On his own death certificate (1906 Co Antrim) he is described as both "farmer & butcher".

I feel that Farm Labourer or Labourer would seem a more plausible occupation given what I know of the background but I am confused by the addition of "Butcher".

Can anyone suggest an explanation please?
