Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Cousins - Mothers identical twins
« on: Monday 27 February 23 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon

My male cousin would like to take aDNA test.  As said our mothers were identical twins.  I know who our maternal Grandmother is after many years of research, ie paper trail, and luckily finding our Grandmother had a child 5 years before the twins (different father) , and I found 2 cousins from that child's marriage who confirmed the story of twins.

We have photo's now of our Grandmother, and I have a good paper trail for her, so I am able to trace that line back to our Grt grandparents and slightly further so have a good idea of where they came from, London, Middlesex, Buckinghamshire and Ireland.   My cousins and I will show differences in DNA, as my father was from Scotland, and his was from Suffolk.

We know nothing about our Mother's Father, as on the twins BC it is blank for father.  I haven't been able to find any evidence, although with the 1921 census the twins are in a different workhouse  to the one they were born in , in London.  I researched the workhouse where they were born at LMA but they had little records for that period 1920, but this new workhouse has more records for that period, so looks like a trip to LMA again.

My cousins Grandson recently had a DNA test which showed German/Jewish.

My cousin has asked me to help with the DNA.   I know very little about testing, even though I have tried researching about it, but I think I will be guiding him towards one or 2 of the well known sites.  I presume it will be an autosomal test, but if we wanted to go further later which test would be more specific for our own mothers father.  I do know about the y-dna & M-dna, but still a little confused.

Thank you for reading, and if anyone could help explaining that would be appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Old schools near Bayham Street Camden.
« on: Thursday 10 January 19 18:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My mother lived at 3 Bayham Street Camden during the 1920's. I have been looking for schools she may have attended during those years.Historically I can't find anything, except that houses with early even numbers  are no longer there.

There are a couple of C of E schools near there now but I don't know the ages of these schools.

Hope there might be someone who can answer my question.

Many thanks Jeanette

World War One / Regimental number,,, help please
« on: Monday 12 November 18 00:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi today my cousin asked if I had found out anymore about her paternal grandfather as she had been asked 'what did he in do WW1', and the family know nothing except he served in France.

The chap in question is Frederick James Friend born 1879 in (Wickham) Suffolk.  I believe I have found him with the Suffolk regiment with the regimental number 9380.  I believe this number to be from when he joined up (unknown date) but is with Suffolk Regiment on the 1901 census and is at the Regiment depot in Ipswich.  He marries in 1903 and is not in the army in 1911.

From WW1  Medal index  cards, Suffolk Regiment is noted and reg number 9380, also listed is that he is a pioneer with the Royal Engineers with reg number 34894.  From the medal and award rolls where he is listed as Fredk J Friend with the same reg numbers his rank is A/Cpl .  Frederick received the British War Medal and the  Vctory medal

This is all I have military wise and I have access to both well known genealogy sites  and have gone through them with a fine toothcomb .  There are no other military records I can see for him.

I know which Suffolk Battalions were in France, but I don't know which one he was with and if he even was with The Suffolks.  Would he have gone out with the Suffolks and then transferred to RE or just served with RE.  Is the regimental number any use to me in research as I have been looking this evening to find out which regiment it was issued to, but can't find anything.

It would be nice for my cousins family if I could find out which battalion he served with as I could give them information from the War Diaries.

Many thanks if anyone can help would be greatly appreciated.

Jeanette

Devon / Exeter - Exwick Graveyard
« on: Saturday 18 November 17 20:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I have the unexpected chance of being able to visit Exeter very soon and would like to visit a grave at Exwick Cemetery 75 Exwick Road EX4 2BW,

I have never been to Exeter and I have used Google maps to find a bus route.  There does seem to be bus stops very near on that road, but google maps seems to be sending me on a different bus route  for that road.   I wonder if any kind soul would have that knowledge and be able to help me to reach this cemetery.

I will most probably use the Bus Station in Exeter to start the journey.

Many thanks Jeanette

World War One / Roll of Honour at Tower Of London (nominated names online)
« on: Monday 18 August 14 22:11 BST (UK)  »
Names that have been nominated for the Roll of Honour are listed now on rollofhonour.tumblr.com

If you wish to nominate one your fallen WW1 relatives.  Go to the Tower of London website and click on The Tower of London Remembers which will take you to the nomination site.  Basic info needed name , rank, regiment etc  and date of death which can be obtained from CWGC site. You cannot ask for their names to be read on a specific date, it is basically first come, first served.Roll of Honour nominations usually open on a Monday and may close at anytime that week due to response, they then open the following Monday.

I was very honoured to have 3 fallen relatives names read out on the 12th August at the Tower with the last post.  Very moving experience and left me with the feeling afterwards how honouring to these men to hear their names called out  after these many many long years.

Suffolk / From London Poor law union to Suffolk poor law union
« on: Friday 16 August 13 00:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Am doing some research on a relative who was in Fulham Road poor law union (City of Westminster) and was transferred as a young child to one of the Suffolk poor law unions.  Have not been able to find much information from London.  The child could have been transferred to Suffolk for a recovery from an illness or it could have just been to make room in London.  Has anyone come across this whilst researching.  Transfers from London poor law unions to Suffolk.  This took place in the 1920's.

London and Middlesex / Which borough does this address come under
« on: Monday 10 October 11 00:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi  :)

I have an address: 90 Hampstead Road London NW from a document from 1922.  Which borough would I look under when  looking for it on an ER?  Also would it be available at a local family history centre or library in London beside LMA etc, and one more question would I find it in a library outside London?

Many thanks   Jeanette
