Armed Forces / 63rd Regiment - around 1820
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am trying to get more information on Edward Hugh Barron, who in 1828 was on the first fleet on ships to arrive in Perth Western Australia, then known as Swan Settlement.
He was listed as a Colour Sergeant of 63rd Regiment and arrived on the ship Sulphur.
He was born in 1796, unsure where but is listed as Ireland in some trees (no source). I suspect he may be English.
I can't seem to find him on web sites for UK army records.  Does anyone have access to anything that might help me?
Many thanks!

Europe / Help again with Finnish names - calling Jamcat95!
« on: Wednesday 09 March 16 09:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

Linking to the help Jamcat95 gave me a while back on this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=585803.0

I have since found a family tree online that details quite a bit of this family (not the Australian side, but the Finnish side).

They have my Henric's father as we did as Henric Johan Lagerström, and HIS parents as Johan Johansson and Maria Pehrsdotter.  I found a baptism as follows:
Born / Christened   12.12.1821   13.12.1821
Village / Farm   Eknäs   S:gd:
Father   bd:   Johan   Johanss:
Mother       Maria   Pettersdr:  43,11
Child   Henrik Johan

The time, village and farm definitely match up.

My query is though how does one change from a Johansson to a Lagerström?  I have asked the owner of the tree but he has not responded.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / can you please tidy up my Dad?
« on: Tuesday 04 February 14 11:21 GMT (UK)  »
My father passed away last year and this is the only photo we have of him in his army uniform showing his stripes.  It was a group photo so I have done what I can to get rid of other people, but I am not very good at getting rid of creases etc.

My brother would love a copy of this tidied up.  Can anyone please help?

Many many thanks!

Derbyshire / Alfreton bastardy papers
« on: Tuesday 01 October 13 13:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
I have been looking for some time for info on an ancestor, Thomas Price.  His censuses say he was born in Somercotes, around 1817.  He married Ann Taylor, on 29 Mar 1835 in North Wingfield, Derby, England (the marriage I have found).

I cannot find any record for Thomas's birth.

I found today the following in a web page called Alfreton bastardy papers
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/BastardyA-B.htm

Elizabeth ENGLAND spinster, pregnant, Thomas PRICE, Somercotes, 1813

I am wondering if this child could be my Thomas Price?  Does anyone have any way of tracing this further?

Europe / help with Finland records/names
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 05:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,
I am back with my long standing search of info on my gg grandfather Henry Lagerstrom.

So far I have determined he was a Russian Fin from the below record on his jumping ship in South Australia.  His ages seem to jump all over the place and I have unable to find anything else apart from the jumping ship, and his arrest and punishment.
see my last post on him http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,585803.msg4370756.html#msg4370756

Some time ago I found a crew list for a ship going Adelaide to Sydney in 1873 and saved it.  Having another look at it now, the name of the person above it is very similar to the man he jumped ship with.  This man's name has been written as Flyeguist, Lelgequest and what looks like Litjeguist.

I am wondering if I can trace this man at all to see if he is from the same place as Henry?

Can anyone help with what the other man's name should be?  Or any other help with Finnish records?

Derbyshire / died in Hunger Hill coal pit, where would he be buried?
« on: Monday 24 December 12 08:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,

I have found a long lost ancestor, who I now know died in a coal mine accident in Hunger Hill coal pit, Wingerworth.

How can I found where he would be buried?

This is what the inquest says:
On Friday, the 1st. inst., an inquest was held at the Bugle Horn Inn, Wingerworth, before
Mr. Busby, on the body of Herbert Price, of Boythorpe, coalminer, aged 26 years. On Wednesday,
the 30th. of October, deceased was drawing timber at the Hunger Hill coalpit belonging to the
Wingerworth Company, when a quantity of bind fell from the roof onto the head and neck of the
deceased, and injured him so severely that he died the same day. Verdict, "Accidental Death".

He died 30 Oct 1861.

In 1851 & 1861, they were living in the Wigan area (Lancashire), and the rest of the family were in that area again in 1871.  I can't find him buried there though.

Many thanks in advance.

London and Middlesex / Charles Petitjean m Florence Hatcher
« on: Friday 23 March 12 09:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am having a lot of trouble tracing the above mentioned Florence hatcher, and wondered if anyone could help?

This is what I have:
Charles Petitjean, born 8 Oct 1862, Otis, Massachusetts, USA (he went to the UK to work)
married (?)
Florence Hatcher, born about 1871, Middlesex, London UK

I can't find a marriage, but the first child was born Nov 1891, in Middlesex (Baptised St James Clerkenwell, London).  There is a family web site http://www.petitjeans.com/charles_petitjean.htm which says that Florence came from yeoman stock in Coventry.

I can locate the family in 1901 & 1911.  1901 says Florence was 30 and born in London, Middlesex.
1911 says Florence was 40 and born Clerkenwell, London.

On one child's baptism, it gives Florence's name as Florence Louise.

The website above says after they married (they also can't find a marriage but estimate 1889) they went to the US.  I can't access the US re cords so am unable to check that. After their marriage, she came to the United States to visit his family, on the S.S. Tower Hill, out of London, arriving at the Port of New York, on 3 Jun 1889.

There is a Florence Hatcher, born Clerkenwell starting on the 1871 census (her aged 5 months), with parents William & Elizabeth.  William is a cabman,so not exactly yeoman stock!
I can't find them in 1881, but can in 1891 and she is still living at home (aged 15).  The thing is, she shouldn't be with the family in 1891, if she was in the US!  So maybe that is a different Florence Hatcher.
I also found the birth of a Flora Louisa Hatcher, but born in Holbron which seems to be too far away from St James Clerkenwell.

One more clue is on the 1911 census, there is a sister in law living with them Catherine Hatcher aged 45.  The family above has a daughter Catherine about 5 years older than Florence.

Can anyone help me find her, her marriage would be a start?  I am wondering if the married in the US?  From what I can tell, they weren't poor people, like most of my family!  This is hubby's side.  i do have quite a bit on the Petitjeans, thanks to the web site, which links censuses etc that I normally wouldn't have access to.

Thanks in advance

Hello all,
I have a couple of photos, one I know who it is from writing on the back (the older lady).  The other is from a different source but must have been taken at the same time.  I am presuming it is one of the older ladies daughters.
Can anyone have a guess when they may have been taken - and if they were in fact around the same time?
The older lady was born 1867, and died 1951, in Western Australia.
Her daughters were born 1890, 1897, 1899 & 1905.  Any idea which one it could be?  She doesn't look to impressed to be out having photos taken with Mum anyway.  :)
Thanks, as usual!

Lancashire / can anyone help me find him? Frank Cotterill
« on: Friday 16 March 12 07:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,
I have lost an ancestor and it is driving me mad!

This man is the brother of my great grandfather.  He was from a family of all sons, and the rest I can account for.  I had presumed he had died, but I recently came into possession of a letter from my ggf to his daughter where he tells her he has been in touch with Uncle Frank.  The letter was dated 01/01/1923.

His name was Frank Cotterill (I have never seen him noted as Francis).  He was born to Charles & Annie Cotterill (Annie nee Rayner) July-Sep 1884 in Warrington Lancashire.

He is on 1891 & 1901 censuses living with his parents.  I can't find him in 1911.  (I do have access to 1911 so if anyone find him, let me know the numbers or whatever)

I have a photo that is supposedly him in a uniform (see photo).  I have tried military searches but can't seem to find one that matches him.  I know they are a bit hit and miss for the UK.  I don't have the full photo, just how it is, and don't know if there is anything on the back.

Does anyone have any ideas?  He can't have just disappeared if he wasn't dead.

Many thanks in advance
Mosher
