Yorkshire (North Riding) / Milbank(e) of Croft, Yorkshire
« on: Friday 13 October 23 00:12 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor Ann who married Francis Linskill in 1711 at Middleton Tyas. Her residence at the time of marriage was Croft.
Ann's surname has been transcribed as Nelbank from the marriage image online but after searching hundreds of records online I cannot find any other mention of that surname.
The closest I can find is Milbank(e). Ann & Francis had children Jane, Francis & Mark (in that order).
There are several Mark Milbanks recorded in Croft & I presume Ann & Francis' son Mark is named after her father.

There is an extensive pedigree for the Milbanke family online but Ann cannot be found on it.
I cannot find a baptism record for Ann who may have been born c.1690.

Can anyone suggest as to what I should do next?
Many thanks.

Armed Forces / Can anyone identify this military uniform?
« on: Tuesday 11 February 20 10:57 GMT (UK)  »
This man, Francis Ernest Alfred Nelson, arrived in Australia in 1889. He served in the Boer War and was in the last contingent to leave Western Australia in 1902.His grandson has posted this photo of his grandfather on a local FB page and has asked for assistance. I've taken on the task of making enquiries for him. Unfortunately his war records aren't available online.
I presume this uniform is connected to the Boer War but I'm not certain. Could someone identify it for me, please?

The Common Room / French Prisoners Deaths in Cornish Parish Registers
« on: Tuesday 28 November 17 07:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have discovered, while researching my family, an extraordinary large amount of French deaths in the parish registers for St Gluvias, Cornwall. The main years are 1747 and 1756. I understand that prisoners were taken during failed invasion attempts of England.

I should imagine that these prisoners were put to death by their English captors but I'm wondering what the reasoning is behind having their deaths written in the registers. Was it law or was it just normal practice to do so? Can anyone shed some light on the practice for me? Many thanks.

Europe / Netherlands: Need help with a birth in Utrecht 1915
« on: Sunday 20 November 16 03:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the birth of Hendrikus Veenvliet who was born in Utrecht on 3rd January 1915. Hendrikus' marriage certificate (1937) states his father was Johannes Veenvliet and his mother was Hendrika van Tessel. Hendrikus died in Australia in 1992. Family folklore states that Hendrikus was possibly adopted. If so, are there any records that would prove this? Many thanks

Ireland / Is He Denis, Edmund or Edward?
« on: Saturday 11 July 15 09:22 BST (UK)  »
I have the Australian death certificate of my great grandfather Edward McNamara and it states he was born in County Clare in 1864. It also states his parents were Patrick McNamara and Margaret Brohan. The information was supplied by his Irish wife.

I have found his birth date, 15th January 1864 at Mountshannon when searching "Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881," database on FamilySearch. It shows his name as Edmund and the correct parents. He also appears as Edmund (no parent listed) on the Irish Civil Registration Indexes. The indexes also show 2 sisters who were born in Feakle.

Now that the Catholic Irish parish registers are online I did a search and found a baptism in Scarriff on the 18th January 1864 (3 days after his birth) just where I suspected it would be. The parents are correct but the name is written as Denis. I have also found his sisters in the parish register so I'm certain I have the correct family. I know Edward could be used instead of Edmund but would welcome any suggestions as to why he appears as Denis in the parish register but appears as Edmund on the indexes and uses Edward during his life in Australia.

Australia / WA Birth Index. Opinions needed
« on: Monday 09 February 15 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching Margaret Bowman who married David Alexander Buscombe in 1910 in Perth.
Margaret died 12 July 1950. Margaret was born about 1884. I'm trying to establish who Margaret's parent's were.
On the WA Birth Index there are 3 entries for Bowman girls born around 1884. They are:

BOWMAN  MARGARET    THOMAS    MCKENNA ELIZABETH  CANNING   25307       1884
BOWMAN  MARTHA        JAMES       MCKENNA ELIZABETH  PERTH       22644       1881
BOWMAN  VIOLET MAY  JAMES       MCKENNA ELIZABETH  PERTH        741          1891

I can't find a Thomas Bowman of a suitable age buried in Western Australia or any mention of a Margaret in any obituaries for a Thomas Bowman etc but I can find a Margaret (Maggie Bowman) mentioned in death notices as being a daughter of James Bowman who died in Perth in February 1903.
It seems a coincidence that a Thomas Bowman should also marry an Elizabeth McKenna just as James Bowman did. I really don't want to pay for a marriage certificate as I'm researching for someone else and I presume the Margaret Bowman born in 1884 will have Thomas listed as her father.

I'm wondering if Margaret Bowman born in 1884 with the father Thomas is in fact Margaret Bowman with the father James. Any ideas, please.

Australia Lookups completed / Frederick COWHERD *Completed*
« on: Friday 06 May 11 00:47 BST (UK)  »
I've had a request from a friend in England asking me if I can find out any information about Frederick COWHERD who may have emigrated to Australia (possibly Victoria). He has substantial information about the Cowherd family in England but would like to know if he has any Australian relatives.

Frederick was born in England in 1899 to John Cowherd. The Cowherds came from around the Kendal or Liverpool area in England.

I've searched the National Archives and the NLA newspapers but there's nothing other than a couple of entries from the 1960s and 1970.

I've also searched under alternate spellings of the name (Cowerd, Coward) without success.

Rootschatters have been of great help to me in the past and I'm hoping someone may be able to help.

Thanks
Jenny

Australia Lookups completed / NALTY family, South Australia *completed*
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 05:04 GMT (UK)  »
I'm interested in the family of Valentine Frederick Augustus Nalty.

He was a trooper with the South Australian Mounted Police in the 1870s, 1880s. I know he married a woman called Ellen (?) and I have 6 children being born to them - Augusta, Frederick, Florence, Kate, Esther and Charles. I believe he died in Victoria in 1920.

There is also a James Newsome Nalty, also a police trooper, who died accidently in 1884. I'm wondering if there is a connection between them. I have read the reports about them on the NLA Newspaper site.

I have come across another Valentine Nalty (born 1884) in Australia who I believe is a composer and is found living in Missouri (U.S.A) in 1910. I think there must be a connection somewhere, with a name like that.

I would be really grateful if some kind Rootschatter is able to fill in the gaps for me, please.

Many thanks
Jenny
