Monaghan / Has anyone got the book 'At the Ford of the Birches'?
« on: Sunday 27 January 19 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anybody had the book: At the Ford of the Birches: The History of Ballybay?

My ancestry goes back to Ballybay and I would love to read this book, sadly the only ones I can find online are been sold for ridiculous prices (£250, £1000+).  What I am hoping is that if somebody had the book, that they would be kind enough to have a look for my Kavanagh's.

Thank you

Europe / Is anyone able to translate from Danish for me please?
« on: Friday 09 June 17 22:37 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my husbands Danish ancestry.  The only thing I have is the marriage certificate in 1844, where he is named as Andreas Hindrichsen, full age, seaman and his father is Peter Hindrichsen also a seaman.  On his daughters baptism in 1846 he is listed as a ships chandler.

My husband has matched via DNA, with somebody who has Hinrichsen from Schleswig Holstein.  Slightly different spelling but I am hopeful.  I am looking for Andreas in that area and I have come across this marriage in 1850.

If somebody could be so kind as to translate, I would be really grateful.

Many thanks.

The Common Room / Mr & Mrs Cooke - disappearing comedians challenge
« on: Monday 27 March 17 22:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Valentine Cooke born 1856 in Dublin marries Mary Jane Innes born 14 Sep 1884 in Atherton, Lancashire on the 2 July 1904 in Aberdeen.  On their marriage cert Valentine is listed as a comedian and Mary as a comedienne.

I have since discovered that Mary did have a stage name of Constance Watt, after their marriage I can find them listed in the newspapers as Mr & Mrs Cooke, I can find them on The Stage newspaper listed in Oct 1906 (the article says they are disengaged and the address is Brunswick St, Manchester) and after that absolutely nothing.

Also I have looked at migration records, Scottish records and the Irish 1911 census and bmd records that are online, I can't find anything, they seem to simply disappear.  Checking the birth records for children born after 1911 with a mothers name of Innes also has drawn a blank.

Although the marriage was in Scotland, this was mainly due to Mary's mother (also Mary) living there in 1901.  Mary's family are back living in England by 1911.

Valentine also had a sister that was a comedian, her name was Lizzie Cooke (Elizabeth A Cooke born 1861 in Galway).  She also seems to disappear!

Would love to find out what happened to the pair of them after 1906 and would appreciate any suggestions anybody has.

Thanks,
Kath

Hi,

Richard Roach was living in Chadlington, Oxfordshire until at least 1853.  He married in 1852, his daughter was born in 1854 and after this date there is no trace of him until I find him on the will index.

His wife is listed on each census until her death in 1885 as married.  Richard was born in 1828 in Over Worton, Oxfordshire and he had a sister Elizabeth who remained a spinster and died in 1894.

It was whilst I was researching Elizabeth and found the index to her will, that I saw on the same page Richard, stating that he was a labourer of New Plymouth, New Zealand, died 3 September 1866.  Administration to his daughter Mary Hannah Maria.

On Elizabeth's entry, it also has administration to Mary Hannah Maria,  I also noticed that Elizabeth's will had been resworn and it was increased by the amount on Richards entry!  There must have been difficulty tracking Richard's relatives as this was over 27 years after his death.

I have looked on the New Zealand bmd indexes, but think Richard must have been living under an assumed name.  As it is not possible to search on just a date of death, I was wondering if any kind rootschatter had any ideas with how I can possibly find Richard with using the date of death and that he lived in New Plymouth.  I do realise I am grasping at straws here!

Many thanks.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Thirsk Memorial Inscriptions
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 14:00 BST (UK)  »
I have found on FindMyPast a couple of memorial inscriptions listed, which give location (in this case St Mary's, Thirsk), name and age.

I was hoping to find out more, ie. who else may have been inscribed on the same memorial etc.  At the moment I am going around in circles trying to find any publications, C.D's etc.

It would be appreciated if some kind person could point me in the right direction please.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Bucklebury Church lookup if possible - 1894
« on: Sunday 02 November 14 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I ordered and received a marriage cert from the GRO.  It is for a marriage on 26 Mar 1894 between Stephen Frederick Kercher and Sarah Jane ??? at the Anglican church in Bucklebury.  I was hoping to decipher Sarah's surname, but sadly cannot.  I was wondering if anybody is able to look at the original record, to see if it is any clearer.
I can find Sarah Jane on the 1891 census, where her name is listed as Rose.  I realise ordering one of her children's birth cert, would also give me her maiden name, but if anybody is able to help by looking at the marriage, it would be really appreciated.

Thank you, Kath

Australia / Guidance please for a birth in Orange, New South Wales c1895
« on: Saturday 12 July 14 14:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am hoping I have been on the right sites, but wondered if some kind person would guide me in the right direction.
I am looking for a Frederick Lee Thompson born 20 Dec 1895 in Orange, New South Wales.  Apparently he was in the Army there also.  He eventually went to Ireland and from there he went to Canada in 1926.  I have found him on various passenger lists, back and forth from Belfast to Canada.
Unfortunately I have found nothing on him from Australia, there are a couple of possible birth entries on the NSW BDM site, but not with his middle name or initial.  Also I was wondering if there was anywhere I could look up about his time in the Army in Australia.

Any guidance would be gratefully received.

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody is able to look up in the burial records for deaths of Ellerby between 1816 and 1841.

Reason I ask is that I have James Ellerby born 1810, he marries on 19 Jan 1839 in Boynton, he was born in 1810 in Wold Newton to Robert and Ann Ellerby.  They also had a son Joshua born 1816.  I can find nothing about Joshua at all.

I have found a couple of interesting newspaper articles on Robert Ellerby, he attempted to run 100 miles in two days (had to stop 13 miles short, due to his swollen legs),  this was in 1814, so I presume he was reasonably young at this point.  Also there is an article in 1808, to say that he knew nothing about his wife Ann's debts prior to their marriage.

I know nothing about Robert, Ann and Joshua apart from the information above, was hoping from the burial records to get ages for Robert and Ann, and to confirm that Joshua died, and it is not a case I am missing him.  There doesn't appear to be records for other Ellerbys in Wold Newton, so am guessing Robert at least was not born there.

Any help would be most appreciated.

The marriage is between George Hillarby and Ellen Gray.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
