Can anyone help? I am trying to find the parents of Sophia Lengthorn. She was born about 1831 in the Wakefield/Leeds area. I can find her on later dates but she has already left home and so her parents are not named.

Many thanks in advance

Hi
This photo is probably of a relative but I can't identify it.
It was taken at Fieldings, 12 Albion Place, Leeds.
Can anyone help with an approximate date of the photo or an estimate of the lady's age?
Many thanks
Sue

Canada / Margarita & Bruce Ian Watt, Ontario
« on: Monday 06 August 12 19:58 BST (UK)  »
My father's sister, Margarita Wilson (b. 1913 Harrogate) married a Canadian serviceman, Bruce Ian Watt (b. 1909?) in 1945 and emigrated to Canada shortly after that. Her last address was in Kingsville, Ontario. I would like to find out when & where she died but I am not sure how to go about it.
Any advice would be welcome!

Family History Beginners Board / Grandfathers second family?
« on: Monday 16 August 10 22:56 BST (UK)  »
Help please...
My grandfather, Arthur Wilson, separated from his wife and family when my father was a small boy. The family are together in Harrogate on the 1911 census and further child was born in 1913 so it must have been some time after that. My father married in 1936 and his father is described as deceased on the certificate. The story in the family is that my grandfather remained in the Harrogate area. Assuming that he really was deceased in 1936, I could only find one Arthur Wilson who died in the Harrogate area (registered Knaresborough Dec 1934). The age (60) fits in with my grandfather's birth date of 1873. However, thanks to some help from this forum, I found a photo of the gravestone of that Arthur Wilson and he is buried his wife, Annie (not my grandmother). I also sent for the death certificate of that Arthur Wilson and his death was reported by his son "S. Wilson". I think it is quite possible that my grandfather had a second family although it was probably unofficial.
The grave is at All Saints Church, Ripley and the death certificate gives an address of Castle Farm, Ripley, Knaresborough.
Can anyone suggest a way of finding out if these two Arthur Wilsons are the same person?
Many thanks

Mayo / Michael Cannon born abt 1840 Swinford, Mayo
« on: Sunday 13 June 10 16:47 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace an ancestor called Michael Cannon who was born around 1840 in Swineford (or Swinford) Co. Mayo. The family would have been Roman Catholic. The family came to England at the time of the Great Famine and I can find him in Barnsley from 1861 onwards. In 1861 he is living with his wife's parents, John & Mary Cole. His marriage certificate gives his father's name as Patrick Cannon (deceased).
Can anyone advise me on how to trace his baptism in Swinford which might then give me his mother's name? Or suggest another route to go down?

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Problem with Ralph Whitehurst
« on: Saturday 24 April 10 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Please help,
I am researching my mother's family and have got back to John Whitehurst (born around 1860) who married Harriet Ann Allen (born around 1861). John & Harriet were married in the Weslyan Chapel, Wolstanton 6th July 1880. Both are resident in Pack Moor, Staffordshire. I got their marriage certificate to find out the name of John's father.
John's father is given as Ralph Whitehurst, deceased, whose occupation is miner.
The only Ralph Whitehurst I can find is a farmer, not a miner and he was still alive much later than 1880. Where am I going wrong?
Many thanks, Sue

Other Countries / Israel: British burial in Jerusalem
« on: Wednesday 14 April 10 22:37 BST (UK)  »
I have been told that my relative Doris Edna Wilson (b.1903 in Hunslet) died in childbirth in Jerusalem, Israel. I don't know much about her but she might be the Doris Edna Wilson who married Cecil Young in Knaresborough 1932 as the family lived in Harrogate at the time. I believe she was a nurse but I don't know if she (or her husband) was in the Forces. Is there any way of finding out more?
Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Harrogate Burial 1934
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 20:47 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find out where some family graves in Harrogate are located. I contacted Stonefall Cemetery and they were able to find all of them except one. Arthur Wilson (born 1873- died 1934) isn't on their database and they think he must be buried in a churchyard. I think he lived in the Bilton area but can anyone suggest how I can find out where his grave is?
Many thanks
Sue
