Armed Forces / Royal Artillery - records deciphering and analysis
« on: Wednesday 23 May 12 06:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I have just bought this record for my ancestor and I am trying to figure out what his record says about him.  Some of the handwriting is difficult to make out.  I am hoping that someone who has experience with army records might recognise some typical words and places?  I am especially interested in the words after it says 'Crimea'... various battles I suppose.  Also, he seems to have been court martialled, which sounds very serious, so any thoughts on that would be most welcome.  Was that a common event?
I appreciate any help offered.

The Common Room / Catholic or Protestant marriage?
« on: Tuesday 22 May 12 21:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I just got a marriage certificate from the GRO and it states: ' Married in the Parish Church acording to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland'.
Perhaps I am asking a silly question, but does this mean that the marriage took place in a Church of Ireland/ Protestant church and not a Catholic church?  The marriage took place in 1858, while Ireland was still under British rule.
Any thoughts would be welcome!

Cork / Royal Artillery Spike Island. Any records available?
« on: Tuesday 22 May 12 19:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I just got my Greatx2 grandfather's marriage cert and it says that he was a gunner with the Royal Artillery, residing at Spike Island.  The year is 1858.  I know that he married a Cork girl and they moved to Dublin and had a family there, but he seems to have been dead by 1876 when his wife re-married.
What I would like to know is where I can find any records from his stay on Spike Island? There must have been records kept on the soldiers stationed there.  His name was David Milligan.  His sons David and James were both also in the Royal Artillery and his father's name was also James.
Any help at all would be very grateful.

Hi.  I sent off to the GRO for this marriage cert, but I can't figure out the parish or the home address of the bride and groom.  Anyone have any ideas?  The marriage took place in Enniscorthy, Wexford.

Thanks,

I'm looking for a Mrs Sheridan who lived at either 60 or 68 Gloucester Rd, Regency Park, London, in 1914, when she wrote to the War Department looking for information about two soldiers missing in action: cousin and brother.
Perhaps she was living at the same address (as a servant perhaps) in the 1911/1901 census?

Her maiden name was Burrows.  She was born in Sligo.  Her father was John Burrows and her mother was Jane Scanlon.  She was Roman Catholic, and I have not been able to find a Sheridan/Burrows marriage in Sligo.  I do not know her first name.
Her parents were married in 1872, so she was most likely born after that.  Her brother John, the soldier who went missing, (was actually a POW), was born in 1884 in Sligo.

I know all this ... but not her first name.  Who was she?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
