The Common Room / Printing off restored photos
« on: Monday 06 February 12 12:29 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon all  :D

It's taken me months, but I've finally restored the majority of my photos using Photoshop.

I sent them all off to truprint, but the results were very disappointing color wise. Brown toned photos turned out red, black and whites turned out purple etc etc.

I think i'm going to print them all off at home now, but here's the dilemma - my printer is AWFUL. I'm going to have to buy a new one.

Has anyone ever printed off their own family photos and had good results? What kind of printer did you use?
What kind of paper did you use? I'm trying to get them as close as possible to the original, the originals are very matte, almost like they were printed on thick normal plain paper.

Armed Forces / Could this be the medal card for my 2x great grandad?
« on: Friday 11 November 11 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
Quoting the CWGC website. This was the entry for the death of my great great grandfather James William Cutts who was killed in action in 1916.

CUTTS J W
Nationality - United Kingdom
Rank - Private
Regiment/Service:   East Surrey Regiment
Unit Text:   7th Bn.
Date of Death - 02/04/1916
Service No - 6556
Casualty Type - Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference - II. J. 17.
Cemetery - VERMELLES BRITISH CEMETERY

I then came across a medal card for a James W Cutts who was in the 1st battalion East Surrey Regiment. The regiment number was 6556, the same as the service number of my great great grandad. I don't know if the two numbers relate to each other.. but is it possible this could be the medal card of my grandfather? (i've attached the medal card image)

Essex / Marriage between Cornelius Wall and wife sarah
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Evening  ;D

I've been looking for a marriage between Cornelius Wall (also known as Neeley/Nealy) and his wife Sarah (Possibly Clarkson, but i'm unsure)
I'm pretty sure the marriage should of occurred in Essex some time between 1795-1805. I haven't managed to find anything beyond Cornelius or Sarah. I'm hoping someone could find the marriage, and hopefully that could give some clues to their past  :D

Kent / Mary Cullen ne Cheeseman on the census
« on: Friday 23 September 11 18:06 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon  ;D

I seem to of hit another brick wall. I cant find the right census records!

My 5x great grandmother was Mary Cullen ne Cheeseman, she married William Cullen on the 24 Dec 1817 in Canterbury kent.

They think they had about 7 children, All born in the Canterbury area. One of those being my 4x great grandmother. They were:
Mary Cheeseman Cullen abt.1817
William abt.1818
Elizabeth abt.1820
Henry abt.1822
Eliza Ann Maria Cullen abt.1824
Eliza abt.1828
William John Cullen abt.1831

So far I have been unable to find Mary and William Cullen on the Census records. As their first child was born about 1817, and they were married in 1817, unless it was a remarriage or something I think William and Mary would of been born around the 1790's (maybe give or take 10 years) So I believe they would of been around on the 1841 census and the 1851 (Unless they both died quite young). I'm interested in finding out where both Mary and William were born and what year. However as I haven't yet found the census I'm stuck at a dead end :(

Armed Forces / Could these soldiers be the same person? *Pictures*
« on: Monday 19 September 11 22:49 BST (UK)  »
Good evening :D

While organizing my photos I found two pictures of soldiers, one who I know who it is, and one which I don't know. I noticed they looked very similar and could well be the same person! Would anyone be able to shed some light on the uniform and perhaps confirm my suspicions?

I have absolutely no idea about anything to do with this guy/guys army stuff, other than both photos were taken between 1900-1905ish. So if anyone could tell me any bits of info it would be a great addition to my tree!

Thank you in advance :D

The Common Room / St John's Retreat 1898, 1903, 1906 (Done!)
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 19:25 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon  ;D

I've been trying to locate all the locations that my 3x great grandfather lived in through his later life. From the baptism of 3 of his children in St Margaret's church, Barking, essex, he and his wife's abode was at 10 St John's retreat (1898), 3 St John's retreat (1903) and again at 10 St John's retreat (1906).

I'm having trouble actually finding where this St John's retreat actually is though. And I was wondering if anyone could help me locate where it was, or near? I have a feeling it may be in Barking but i'm unsure.

Any help is much appreciated!

Essex / 1901 Ann Dawkins Lookup
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 10:17 BST (UK)  »
Morning  ;D

I was wondering if anyone could do me a look up Ann Dawkins (nee Bannister) born in Ongar 1822 on the 1901 census.
On the 1891 she was living with her husband George in Romford, Essex. However george died between 1891-1901 leaving her a widow.
For some reason i've put on my tree that George died in Billericay, however i'm starting to think he may of died in Ongar. Ann's location on the 1901 census may be able to point closer to where abouts George may of died.

Essex / Lots of Nicholls - Can't find the connection? (Family Grave!)
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 23:30 BST (UK)  »
Good evening  ;D

Today, after hell tracking it! I managed to find the burial record and the plot number of my 3x great grandfather Ralph Richard Nicholls' grave. So off I went to the cemetery to go seek him out, I finally found his plot. To my suprise the front of the plot was marked "Nicholls" and there was 4 people with the surname Nicholls in it. However none of them were my Ralph Richard! It'll be my guess that maybe he couldn't afford to have his name put on it, however I have absolutely no clue how he is connected to this other bunch of people. I'm wondering if anyone could help me find any sort of connection?

My Ralph Richard Nicholls (also known as Richard) was born in Hornchurch, Essex in 1864 to James Nicholls (1830-1869 Knodishalll, Suffolk) and Eliza Simpson (1834-1826 Hornchurch, Essex)

From the info on the sides of the graves the other guys were
John Terry Nicholls 1865-1945
(his wife) Elizabeth 1866-1948
"our daughter" Ida unknown birth - 1940
& Olive unknown birth - 1975

I could be wrong, but it seems a bit strange that Ralph Richard would be put into a rather large Nicholls family grave 2nd, if he wasn't connected in any way to the family.

Also, from the burial record I found the house he died at. I also found a record of 2 other Nicholls people who died In the very same house as Ralph did but in different years!
a Richard James Nicholls 1915-1940 (he could of well been living with Ralph judging by the years)
and Elizabeth Nicholls 1909-1923 (her and Richard James were actually burried together, I have no idea how they're connected)

If anyone could help me solve this massive Nicholls Nightmare, i'd appreciate it! I really hope this all makes sence, if it doesn't i'll be around to provide any more information as I have a feeling I could be up all night searching myself..  :P

The Common Room / Obtaining a naturalization from the National Archives
« on: Wednesday 15 June 11 13:12 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon  ;D

I wasn't entirely sure where to post this, so please forgive me if it's in the wrong place.

On the National Archives website there is a naturalization record listed for my Swedish great great grandfather (who I know very little about.) I want to order it, but as I don't want to copy all the pages (incase I end up with thousands of irrelivent pages!  :P) I have to add details of what I want from the document. However, I have no idea what a naturalization should consist of, so I have no idea what to put  ???

I'd appreciate a hand with this!  :P

EDIT:
I was just looking up the price list to. And theres tons of ways to get a paper copy of the record.. What would be the best for a naturalization?
