Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help deciphering these letters please
« on: Wednesday 23 November 22 10:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I’ve been sent these letters by a distant cousin and he’s ask if I can help decipher them!

I think they all relate to the same thing, I can make out small parts, but not what it actually has to do with John Symons who wrote them.

I’ve picked out that it’s something to do with a Mr Eccles and a mortgage or the deeds for a house and lack of payment, John is in Toledo, USA and the house I think is in Ottawa, Canada where John previously lived.

I can make out the name Peter Frederick Hendricks in the letter that mentions selling the house.

If anyone can decipher or even tell me what’s going on it would be a great help, thanks.

Hi, I’m trying to work out which of 4 sisters this could be. Elizabeth Symons born 1841, Ann Symons born 1844, Eliza 1847 or Sarah 1849. All born in Fremington, Devon.

I think the photo is 1860s but not certain.

I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about the clothes, could it be her having turned 16 or 18 so the family get a professional photo? Or even a bridesmaid photo? Maybe to send to a prospective husband? As you can tell I have no knowledge of these things so would love to know.

I’ve looked up the photographer and he covered a period in Ilfracombe from c1860-1880.

Thanks for any help in advance.
Personally I think it’s Ann or Sarah as they are the only two still at home in the 1871 census, Ann marries in 1879 and Sarah in 1881.

Armed Forces / After any help with the military service of John Rainer 1880s
« on: Friday 14 January 22 12:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I’m hoping some of your expertise will be able to help me with this for a friend please.

Her great grandad was John Rainer sometimes Raynor born 1856 in Leicester. Found a WW1 pension record for him having rejoined age 60! Service number 38608 in the RDC. He was disabled out due to haemorrhoids! Ouch! He states that he had previously served in the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire regiment and that he had had haemorrhoids since serving in India.

He is missing in the 1871 and 1881 censuses, so would this be general service in India? I’ve just read about the Battalion being in Lucknow in 1887 as there’s a well known execution of one of their soldiers. He married in Leicester in 1886 so wasn’t there then but I presume was previously.

There’s a J Raynor received the Boer War medals but I don’t think that will be him as he’s in the 1901 census.

Is there any way I can find out more without contacted the regiment, any help greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Donegal / Can’t find a marriage, probably in Moneyhaughly
« on: Monday 10 January 22 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I’m trying to find a marriage for a Charles McLaughlin to a Mary McElhare or McElhane or very similar in 1870 in Donegal. Looked in all the usual places and can’t find anything. I’ve gotten Mary’s surname from the childrens births but it’s pretty hard to read on all of them! In the 1911 census they say they’ve been married for 41 years so around 1870, censuses say both born in Donegal as well.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Thank you,

Kev.

Cavan / Royal Irish Constabulary record or any other info on James Ryan please.
« on: Monday 10 January 22 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I’m after anything on James Ryan born around 1836 I think in Cavan. I have his marriage to Anne Kearns in 1867 in Swanlinbar. He’s a constable, I have daughter Sarah’s marriage and it says Royal I. constabulary, but he’s not with Anne and the family in the 1901 or 1911 census but she states married not widowed, So I have no place of birth and can’t find a record for one. Wedding certificate says father James Ryan, Farmer.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Kev.

Armed Forces / Help with any information on a Royal Engineer please.
« on: Friday 27 August 21 15:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I’m trying to find out any information on Francis Frederick West born 1892, Bedminster, Bristol.

I think he joined the Royal Engineers in 1908, service number 23109 and then 2306332.

I have all his medal cards etc and his MM notice from the gazette.

I just can’t find a service record on any of the usual sites, I have a daughter born for him in 1923 in Pakistan? then a return to England in 1924, then he retires in 1950 retaining the rank of Major.

Considering he seems to have had a long serving career I can’t even find an obituary for him.

From what I can tell he dies in Bournemouth in 1970.

Anything that can be found would be hugely appreciated, my highest DNA match on Ancestry is a second cousin, cannot work out how I am related to them, my only possibility is that they are the grandson of this long serving gentleman, through his son, Also Francis Frederick West born 1920 Bristol.

Annoyingly his medals sold two years ago at auction and I missed them!

Cheers for any help,

Kevin.

Leitrim / Anyway I can find out about John Clarke, born Ardvoley 1860?
« on: Saturday 03 April 21 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi I have a John Clarke that marries Mary Clarke in South Shields, Durham in 1883, he’s in the England census in 1891, 1901 and 1911. Dies in 1914. He says he was born in Ardvoley in 1860, is there anyway I can find him before he moves to England? I can’t see him for certain in the 1881 England census even though I think he might be there as Mary moves there from Ireland before 1871 and she’s only 8 years old then so she must meet him there.

Can anyone help me find a baptism or anything that will help please, I’m not even certain where Ardvoley is as a google search doesn’t give much?

Any help greatly appreciated,

I will order their marriage certificate shortly, but that’s only going to give me fathers name anyway, might help if I have options to narrow down.

Did find a baptism from 1865 on the IGI but John always states 1860 on the censuses so I would think that’s correct. I’m aware registrations don’t start until 1864.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kev.

Ireland / Wow! Irish Genealogy is hard, lots of help required please!
« on: Monday 21 December 20 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, sorry to not be more specific in the subject, but I'm researching a family tree for my friend and for the first time in the 20 odd years I've been doing it, I am trying to trace Irish roots.

To say I'm struggling is an understatement! I'm aware of the restrictions on records, I've used Ancestry, the GRONI site and the census site, not having a great time of it!

So much that I can't find that I feel is out there somewhere, so please all of you with much better knowledge of Irish records than myself, could I ask for any help, suggestions or solutions to all of this. Will set it out as best as I can!

My friends dad was Vincent Mackey born Armagh, 25th May 1938, all they know is that his dad was James and his mother Bridget, they think he was part of a large family.

I know I can't find a birth online but I found a marriage that fits.

James Mackey marries Bridget Mcavinney 20th May 1931 Armagh, his father Joseph and her father Joseph. Bridget's death in Coventry gives her DOB as 17th March 1911.

I've found a baptism for James in Armagh, father Joseph and mother Mary Lavery.

Then their Marriage, Joseph Mackey father Peter Mackey, Mary's father James.
Also found them in the 1901 and 1911 censuses, gives Josephs DOB as 1876 Armagh and Mary's as 1875 County Down.

I cannot find births or Baptisms for Joseph and Mary even though it's Christmas time ;) far too many Mary Laverys although one has mothers name Whisker

I've found a James Lavery marrying a Mary Jane Whisker in Craigavon in 1871.

Can't find them in the censuses.

As for Bridget Mcavinney well, can't find a baptism, if she was born march 1911 then shouldn't she be in the census? Can't find a Joseph Mcavinney in either census either, the only possible I have is a marriage of a Joseph McAviney to Sarah Anne Mallon in Armagh in 1898. Found a couple of kids for them but no luck in census either.

All help/ideas are gratefully received, particularly with the Mcavinneys, looking at it now I've not done too bad!

Thanks in advance,

Kev

Hi all,

I'm after any information on Walter Henry Irving born 5th May 1912 in Ipswich, I've been told that he emigrated probably in the 1950s with wife Annie and his two sons. I know Annie came back to England as she died in Barnet in 1989 (listed as widow), her son Roland declared the death so he must've returned as well. Can anybody find anything on thus family in New Zealand please, as I have nothing about this time. He was a Carpenter in the 1939 census.

Any help appreciated, cheers

Kev.
